I'm currently working on a friends laptop thats running Windows XP Pro with SP2. This thing is definitely infected and I'm trying to run hijackthis and other programs to clean it. Anytime I attempt to run a program (exe file), the system runs a spools.exe instead of the actually program I double clicked on. This file then sits in task manager at 100% cpu. I located the file and deleted it but now when I run an exe the system asks me which program to use to run it?!I'm assuming a virus changed something in the registry related to this however I can't even run regedit.
I had recently had to reinstall Windows XP. However, after I reinstalled, I could not access or use any of the old software or files that were still on the computer such as microsoft office. When I try to open and use the software, it takes me into the software screen (ie a blank document for word/excel) and it tells me that the software is not installed under the current user and then the program closes down. I also cannot access my documents saved under my user name. When I try to open the folder, it tells me that I do not have access to it. It will not allow me to edit its name or delete it as well. In addition, it keeps telling me the folder is empty when I right click and look on its properties while at the same when I go up a folder and look under properties, the same folder has 9 megs in it.
I had my PC (athlon 2300, winXP sp2) set so I could see hidden files, just so I could know what was going on in my hard drive. As of yesterday I can't, and re-setting the see hidden files option doesn't work anymore. Last major change I made was uninstalling Norton SystemWorks, a.k.a. ResourceHog, which was giving me a huge headache, and have been using Activescan and Kaspersky online scanners and CureIt free antivirus.
i have a 256k broadband internet connection which is behind NAT, since the past 1 week, i have been noticing a strange problem, i am unable to download any exe, iso or xml files from the web. i have tried download managers like DAP, flashget and getright and have also tried mozilla firefox browser, but i am unable to find a solution. i am using mcafee anti-virus version 9 and have no firewalls installed nor the windows firewall in windows xp is enabled. i have also scanned for adware and spyware with lavasoft adware se ver 1.06 pro, spybot search & destroy ver 1.4, webroot spy sweeper ver 4 and ms anti-spyware. i have all the ms patches reeleased after sp2.
I have an external HDD on which I have backed up 15G of Data. I wish to retrieve some Pictures from this Backup but when I try to open it in order to restore these pictures I cannot find a programme to open it with. I do have Windows NT but can't seem to get it to open with .bkf.
They all look like this: $ntuninstallkb929399$ They are in the Windows directory, at the beginning. This is Win/xp sp2. I think they are some sort of uninstall file for MS fixes. But I don't honestly know. I have several pages of these files. Does anyone know what they are?? Can I safely delete these files????
My dad was using my computer, and I think he did a "system restore" or a reboot. I'm not sure which one because I wasn't there when he did it. (Unfortunately...) I start up my computer and my login is no longer on the login screen. It automatically logs in & starts Windows XP. My desktop has changed to factory setting, there are all these different icons on my desktop now, and it basically looks like it did when I opened it out of the box 2 years ago. I go to My Documents and none of my files are there. Same with My Pictures and My Music. My dad said when he did the reboot/restore the data files would not be deleted. They weren't, and I found them under "My Computer> C> Documents and settings> Owner> Owner's Documents". All of my docs, pics, and music are there. My question is, how can I get my computer back the way it was before my dad messed it up? If I can't do that, how can I get all of my documents, pictures, and music under the appropriate files? I tried to do a "system restore" but it won't let me choose a restore date before my dad messed with it.
Can someone fill me in on the files ( content.ie5 & history.ie5 ). There are more than one instance of these files scattered about Windows. The primary one I am wondering about is in ... /[current user]/local settings/Temporary Internet files/content.ie5. The 2 things are this. 1) It is soo well hidden, that if you don't know it's there you will never see it. One has to make use of the command window and address it directly. 2) This file grows constantly as you use IE. It also grows when one tells IE to clear all cache and history files. It becomes unusally large, over 2 to 3 gigs, or more. I am using XP PRO /SP2, but these files are in all windows from 98 up I think.
A while back I bought a wired router for my two computers one running XP and one running 98. hooked up the router just like the instructions said, ran the cable hooked it up, nothing happened, ran the network setup wizard made the disk and ran it on the other machine...Nothing happened, brother came over didnt do anything just looked and the other computer was in the network places just like it should be it worked fine the internet worked, file sharing worked, and printer sharing worked for several weeks until a few days ago now the internet works on both computers but cant share files Jacob
My problem started when I read an article on the web that Microsoft uses a "/prefetch:1" command to load Windows Media Player faster than normal. This is usually added to the shortcuts found on your taskbar and desktop. I thought this is a great idea. I should have this "/prefetch:1" command on all my important shortcuts.
I logged into my limited account and I tested it on the programs I used the most and in fact it worked wonderful, that is until I used it on a particular program called 2xExplorer. This program is like Windows Explorer on steroids. I've used this great program for a couple of years now and never had a problem. I added the "/prefetch:1" command to my 2xExplorer shortcut and when I launched the program it worked fine.
I want to know if there is a way to delete my files from the recycle bin as when I try to delete them it displays an error saying "Cannot delete file".If you have some idea how to delete these then please tell me ?
I was wondering what this folder (ACW, in Program Files) is for as I've never seen it before and it suddenly showed up as I searched through my program files. Is it some sort of malicious software? I noticed there was nothing contained within the folder even with hidden files visible.
I was unable to start Windows XP and was in a sort of start-up loop. I reinstalled Windows and I have had to start again from scratch. Everything seems to be working OK but when I start up each day I get messages to say that certain files have been lost due to a hardware or network failure and to save these files elsewhere.
For some reason, when tried to open a PDF file over the internet, it shows the downloading and then when it's done, it's just a white screen. I tried going back but it's still the same thing. So I went to my desktop and clicked on some other older PDF file I had and I don't get know error message or anything, it doesn't open.
I've been unable to delete a folder and subfolder that appeared out of nowhere in October of 2003. The folder is named C:502371470d48710f4f and contains a subfolder named sp2. The subfolder contains 0 files. Both folders are read-only. I go to Properties and uncheck the read-only attributes; however when I try to delete I then find that the attributes have returned to (grayed-out) read-only. Access, of course, is denied.
I've become unable to download and save files to my machines (Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SBS SP1). The download goes ahead, but at the point of writing the file to my local hard disk, I get the following error message, then the file is deleted!!!"Windows Security Warning Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file."I wouldn't mind, but I haven't changed anything that would have enforced this, can't find any way of disabling / configuring this functionality and I trust the file and its source (a good example is the Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus software downloads!)
I am running a dell 4600 with windows xp 2pac. I have some things that i am trying to get rid of off my computer but they won't go. Most of it is google stuff that got loaded when my husband loaded a new program. I have gone through search and it brought it all up...but when i go to delete it, it gives me an alert and says that it can't be deleted to check the disc. I have no disc, it was downloaded from the interenet.how to get rid of these hidden files.
I initially had a problem with java after installing a SP2 update for IE. And eventually reinstalled XP, that didn't correct the issue and then I had to get a new product code because I was in the "you have 30 days to activate" loop even though my copy of XP was already activated. So called Microsoft, got new product key and started to install again. This is when I first got the "Unable to copy files" error. I tried 2 different copies of XP but got the same issue, with the same files, with each disk.I've talked to Microsoft for hours, and finally had a guy tell me it was my motherboard (now this is after having swapped out my memory with the manufacturer). I just received my replacement board (M7NCD by Biostar) and I am still getting the same error. The gist is that at the dsound3d.dll, I start to get "unable to copy file" errors. I attempt to retry the copy, which works occasionally, but eventually I get an error (normally a memory error) Microsoft had said that even with those errors, it wasn't my memory but my motherboard that was the issue
I'm having some issues with one of my PC's. After about a minute at desktop, it would completely lock up. Using msconfig, I was able to isolate (at least) one of the things causing it: a service called 'Windows Management Instrumentation'. Keeping it, and it's co-responding service, unchecked in msconfig, stops the freeze, and allows my computer ot seemingly work as if all is well. However, I'm skeptical that is the case. Also, another problem occurred yesterday....all of a sudden my admin account no longer displayed on the login screen. I had taken my PC to a repair shop last week, and the guy created a new account...this account has administrator priveledges, just as the old one does. However, it is missing a lot of files and documents that were from my old account. When booting in safe mode, both accounts still display. Why is this? Another question, does anyone know what the service CaReTaKeR-CT NetMgr is/does? It looks a bit seedy, so I've currently disabled it.
I had to re-setup WIN XP after a system crash and had valuable photos and music that I had been permanently wiped. However, I just installed a new Norton AV program and, while running a complete scan, saw those specific file names being scanned, The path specified was c:ownermy documents and settings Access to this folder is denied, even though I have no password protection on any user account, and this IS the only account set up.
I have got 3 partitions on my HDD namely C, D and E drive.C is the windows drive , the other two are normal data storage drives. Yesterday when i started the PC, i found that all the folders on my E drive have become empty and the files which i can see do not work. Everything on the partition has become useless.Even though all folders show 0 files, the used disk space is same as before. Is it some kind of virus?
One more thing, i tried to system restore. When i reached the system restore screen, i found out that all my restore points are gone and i cant restore my PC to any earlier date, even though i have assigned nearly 20% of each disk for creating restore points. Even the calendar in system restore screen wont show a previous month except the current month.
I use briefcase to synchronize files on two computers. I can not sync. some folders because of "read only" attribute. When I uncheck read only box and apply it seems to correct but when you reopen properties, it is checked again.
I've got a machine running Win XP Home SP 2. Ther is a folder containing files in the Program Files folder that I want to delete. When I attempt to delete any of them, either to the recycle bin not, I get an error "Access Denied - ...". I am the computer administrator. The only help I could find on Microsoft site tells me to have the administrator change my privileges or the permissions on the files. Well, since I am the administrator, it seems like I should be able to do it myself.
im fairly new to computers but seemed to be doing ok until i allowed my neice & her friend to play games on it. now i cant open some of my files as its saying 'dont know what programe created it' especially DLL files.
i am not able change the settings in My Folders options..Everytime i click on Show Hidden Files..nothing happens..and my radio buttons do not check any of the two options.i.e Show hidden files & do not show hidden files..also i have tried to change the value of CheckedValue in regedit to 1..but everytime its comes back to 2...i think there is some virus thats doing it.
I have a dell laptop with windows media center installed, as you know they come with a seperate partition for the backup files. For me backup files are not necessary, so I deleted the contents then installed WOW in its spot. Then later on I decided to merge this partition using partition magic. While merging my computer crashed. My C: drive is saying that it has the contents of the old partition, but it is not accessible or visible. I tried using partition magics drive mapper to make these files go into c: but it did nothing.
