I've become unable to download and save files to my machines (Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SBS SP1). The download goes ahead, but at the point of writing the file to my local hard disk, I get the following error message, then the file is deleted!!!"Windows Security Warning Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file."I wouldn't mind, but I haven't changed anything that would have enforced this, can't find any way of disabling / configuring this functionality and I trust the file and its source (a good example is the Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus software downloads!)

OS is Windows XP. The computer is 6 years old & have never had problems. Recently I'm unable to access internet Explorer. The white page appears and the "connecting" message...and there it stays. Also, I'm unable to download .net versions 2.0 through 3.5, which appears to prevent me from downloading other programs. One tech tried to assist me remotely & ultimately suggested

I am running on Windows XP, few years old. Having a problem with Windows Update where it is not downloading the updates. The webpage loads with this message: “Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website…The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it or allowing it to run

I am having problems with downloads from Google Groups timimg out. I am unable to download anything over 500 k. I have contacted Dell and my ISP, I have deleted temp files, cache, cookies, etc. I also use Spybot S & D, Ccleaner, Disk Cleanup, and Defrag. None of the above seem to help. I am so frustrated! I am attaching a thumbnail of a download. Is there a way I can speed up the downloads or prevent the timeouts?

Unable to download any programs. But some updates seem to work. There are no error messages, the download screen looks normal apart from there being not download speed or anticipated time to download. The pages fly but nothing happens. Eventually I just cancel. Restore points before the date have failed. Reinstalling SP2 did not help. Un-installed recent installs around that time to no effect. I have even tried using other ISPs with all firewalls and AV turned off. Internet Explorer is the browser.

I'm currently building a new system and I also want to upgrade one of my Win98 systems to win XP. I have a genuine copy of Windows XP (SP2) which has never been used. Looking around for a second OS I can see very cheap downloads of XP professional from commercial sites. (much cheaper than the amount I paid for the XP home edition). If I download the zip files I couild create an ISO image for a CD install on the new system .... but will there be a problem with activation?

I have been trying to download America's Army (2.5GB) via http for a while now with no success. What happens is that the download just stops at the 2GB mark for no apparent reason. I tried using Firefox 2.0.0.3, IE6 and IE7 (which I downloaded against my better judgment) all with the same faliure. The first time, I tried to download it from gamearena.com.au (hosted by Bigpond) and all subsequent times, as unmetered content from my ISP (Inter node).I first googled the problem and came up with lots of questions but no answers. Then I emailed my ISP who are usualy outstanding for customer support (they haven't outsourced their call centers and don't plan to) but they too couldn't find a specific answer. They were however able to suggest that it was a Windows thing as there was nothing about my connection or firefox that would limit download size to 2GB.So the question stands; How do I get Windows XP Media center 2005 to allow over size http downloads?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. I had Internet Explorer 7, and for about a month I would get a "Error: Operation Aborted" every now and then and I would have to open a new window, so Friday morning I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 Beta to see if it would remove the problem. It didn't, so I tried Firefox, but I found both IE 8 and Firefox to be annoying, so I decided to remove them both and go back to IE 7, but this caused a whole different problem. I think that I might have done something wrong while removing the programs because now IE doesn't work at all. Now whenever I click on IE, the IE screen will flash for about a second and then disappear.

Suddenly, I noticed that Windows update no longer works. I still get automatic updates, but for some reason I can't manually update things. Anyone else seen this? If you note, they're asking to install an Active-X control, but the information bar doesn't popup to allow me to continue.

I can not launch 90% of my apps, word, excel, adaware, when I click on the program it launches, and I get the .exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Then it shuts down that program. I can not add any new favorites to my internet explorer, does the same thing. I can not download a file and save it, I can download a file and run it though, not always successfully. Pretty much the pc is becoming crippled I have run registryfix7 (had it installed) fixed what was listed, but no helpI have done a full virus scan and spyware scan with Windows LiveOneCare, nothing shows up.

When i click a download link, i get the prompt:Save File, Cancel. i click save, and immediately the download will be cancelled, as i have checked in the 'download' tab (Firefox3.5)i can click retry and it will actually download it though, (to my desktop) and as it is downloading i can see the filesize increasing, but as soon as it is done downloading, the filesize becomes 0 bytes.also, when i right click the file, to the bottom of the properties tab, there is an "Unblock" option"Security: This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer. Unblock" When i try to open the file..."C:Documents and SettingsOwnerDesktopccsetup223.exe is not a valid Win32 application"..which makes sense, the filesize of it is 0 bytes.

My computer didn't come with an XP CD, just the manufacturer's restore CD which will wipe out all I've done in the last four years. So, if I backup (copy) all the files on my C drive, except the Windows folder (assuming that's where all the OS files are), to an external drive, then run the restore CD which will revert the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. Then download and install SP2 and copy the original files back to C.

Windows XP allows you to customise the appearance of Windows XP and has I think 4 different appearances you can choose from in the display properties under windows XP style with Windows XP plus installed. Is there any website that lets you download files to change the appearance of Windows XP without installing an extra program such as Window Blinds? I ask because I'm not artistic enough to create my own.
