But then i got GAIN from i think some codec i got online, and then my cpu usage used to jump up to 100% quite frequently. Jan 17, 2005having trouble with the mobo CMOS settings and ended up rmaing the mobo and the memory. Well i got the new mobo and memory is it loads. When it goes to load XP it gets NTLDR not found or something to that degree and says press ctrl+alt+del to restart. My hd has a partial install of xp and i havent been able do the full install. Was wondering how to do the full install now. I tried popping the xp cd in and it doesnt read it, it just gives me the NTLDR message and wont do anything.

Jul 29, 2005New machine and new to XP - have noticed that the supplier of new m/c has used our very distinctive surname to name the system folder under Documents and Settings when installing XP Home. Can we change this as it seems to be appearing in a lot of situations - is it possible that this might be transmitted out onto the internet via emails etc. or web surfing - will we get "personally addressed" spam as a result? Tried "rename" but of course it says it cannot be done as it is a System folder"

Nov 9, 2006I have been using a Compaq Deskpro with Windows XP SP2. And then I sold that computer and bought a Compaq Evo. I then inserted the same harddrive but it is failing to boot. When I insert the installation disc it says "Press any key to boot from CD". Pressing keys does not activate anything and it stays on the same screen. I then created 6 set up disks and they all work perfectly loading drivers etc. The problem starts when I reach the stage where it says "insert Win XP SP2 installation disc and press any key when ready". What I am now trying is to get date and time off a server upon startup. The problem is windows xp won't synchronise with time servers if date does not match! For security reasons, windows can not synchronize with the server because your date does not match. Please fix the date and try again.

Dec 23, 2008This is a Windows XP sp3 domain connected PC with one specific user, which all of a sudden takes 2.5mins to log in to the domain, Where it used to take just about 20 seconds. Other users on the same PC is all OK 20sec login This is not the usual where it hangs at "applying computer settings" or "personal settings" it's after those two has passed that it just hangs for a couple of minutes.
All i get is the mouse pointer (not even hourglass) and the desktop wallpaper for about 2-3 minutes. When it finally logs in everything is as quick as you would expect that spec of PC to be (1,6ghz Sempron, 1gb RAM, 40gb IDE-100 HDD)

Aug 25, 2009I work from home and am stressing here! I was working on a file in Word and all of a sudden my cursor seemed to get "stuck" and was advancing rapidly. I unplugged the keyboard, the mouse, everything, and nothing would stop it. I thought it maybe needed to be rebooted, but when I did that, I got myself in a worse position because now it is STILL stuck and it won't let me enter my password in the sign-on area. (I had password protected it to keep my teenage daughter off the computer at times she wasn't allowed to be). So I can say it's not the keyboard or the mouse, because after unplugging them, it still types *something* all by itself into my signon box. And I can't get it to stop.

Mar 31, 2008I had this server installed by a technician as a file server. I tried to upgrade it a few times but the settings were so tight it wouldnt even allow automatic updates. There is no antivirus program on the server but all the worstations do. My problem now is that I can't log on to the server. It accepts my user and pass, prepares network connections, then I see the desktop for a second or two and then loops back to the logon screen (ctrl+alt+del). Many other owners have this same problem but I havent found anyone with a fix. I am able to access the server thru a workstation and found the server to have a virus (win32 Parite) which apparently does not damage the files. I have scanned it many times with AVG and at the end of the scan it says must reboot to heal, but since I am using a workstation to scan, it is the workstation that reboots and the virus is not healed. I have rebooted the server also by killing the battery but no luck.

Sep 20, 2005I am a computer enthusiast and I assemble my own PCs. I wanted to know how to brand the PC with custom System Manufacturer and System Model settings. I am aware of the OEMINFO.ini file but that only changes information in the Computer properties page when you right-click 'My Computer' and choose properties.But when you use dxdiag,the System Manufacturer and System Model read "To be filled by O.E.M".Could anyone please tell me how to go about changing these settings ? Changing the OEMINFO.ini file does not affect these values.OEM manufacturers like Dell, Sony have changed the settings on their products, so I'm sure it's possible.

I went to the network adapters and unchecked Client Service for netware, NWLink NetBios and NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios and made sure the DHCP was checked for TCP/IP. I rebooted the laptop and went and tried to connect to the network, still came up with unable to connect, check domain name, etc. Is there anything else I can do or do I have to reload Windows XP?

Jul 5, 2006My laptop is running XP SP2. There are two accounts created, one for myself and one for my partner. Both accounts have administrator privileges. Yesterday my partner was unable to login, as XP rejected every attempt with a "have you forgotten your password" balloon. I logged-in OK on my account, changed the password (but used the same value as before) on her account, then logged-out. This time she could log in OK. Same problem happened again this morning!! Once corrected as above, then she can login in/out without problem.
It is not the obvious things of finger-trouble, Caps Lock ON by mistake etc etc - checked all those. First time it occurred was shortly after a violent thunderstorm, so I wondered if electrical interference had caused a corruption somewhere, but everything else seems OK and there was not another storm this morning.
Unable To Login - Even In Safe Mode
Apr 1, 2007About 2 years ago my computer randomly shut down (I think because of a virus), and when I tried starting it back up, it would bootup fine, but I could never get past the XP Pro login screen. The passwords/accounts are fine. I only have one password-protected account, which is mine, and the password is still valid. I also have an additional account for my sister without a password. Whenever I try to login to either account, it displays the "Loading account settings." dialogue but doesn't do ANYTHING after that, it never logs in. I tried booting my computer into safemode, but then it gets to a login screen for Administrator, and apparently there's a password that I guess I set a long time ago, and I have no clue what it is and can't log in. I tried logging in WITHOUT putting an administrator password in since I know you can sometimes do that with XP Home, but I had no luck. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is there a way I can log in somehow? Is it a virus? Also, if I were to somehow get into the computer by setting up an additional XP partition, would I still have access to all of my files? THe reason I ask is because I saved a LOT of IMPORTANT work-related files into the "My Documents" folders for my account...is there a way I can access any of that?

Mar 7, 2010Here's what's going on one of my computers (windows xp home professional I believe) I downloaded a pretty nasty virus by mistake and ran it (for some reason avg didnt detect it as a virus) well this virus may just of totaled my hard drive beyond repair I've researched on the web for people who have had it happen to them but found no easy answer. What happens is this:
1. I boot up computer
2. Computer gets all the way to loading bar
3. Quick Blue screen appears
4. BAM computer reboots endless cycle
Now I've made myself a winxp recovery cd (never had one in the first place) and have tried various commands to bring my computer to a working state to no avail
chkdsk and chkdsk /r return with something like "the system has unrecoverable errors"
bootcfg /rebuild returns with something about a problem with the file system and says to run chkdsk. I also tried a command to rebuild the boot.ini but it failed to. I have been successful at getting windows PE to run by booting to cd drive I tried chkdsk from there and still no good. Safe mode returns the same results btw so thats out of the question. ONE TIME I was able to start up windows in something like directory services mode but im not quite sure how :/ It just decided to show up on the menu with boot options on a try........
