"There Are No More Files" / Attempt To Access From Invalid Address

Oct 14, 2008

I've hit a problem with Windows XP, I've looked around and I haven't been able to find anywhere which offers a potential solution, This hit my computer without warning, I switched it on this morning and it worked as normal, I was using Google Chrome, in order to browse websites that were free of spyware (the Guardian at time of crash) all of a sudden things started to freeze up. I restarted the computer, and now a lot of programs are refusing to open - Microsoft Office, among others, states "Error: There Are No More Files", whilst other programs such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer state "Attempt to Access From Invalid Address", even when I am running them from their root folders.

Crashed - Salvage Attempt Being Hindered By Access Denied Windows

Jul 28, 2005

I had a system crash after installing drivers for a d-link wireless card (PCI). In the system that the crash occured on I had 2 Harddrives: one Maxtor SATA 200GB, and one Maxtor IDE 160GB. I used the 200GB for windows and my documents, and I used the 160GB for PS2 game backup ISO's and media files. The crash involved a BSOD when trying to load windows, and it reset many of my BIOS settings. It also corrupted my 200GB hard drive, but did'nt harm the 160GB one. I have since changed back the BIOS settings, and I installed XP onto the 160GB hard drive, in order to salvage the damaged one. at first the damaged one wouldnt open saying "Drive G is corrupt and unreadable". I then ran chkdsk and it fixed tons of errors so that I can now browse the HDD, but it still wont boot windows off of it, giving me another BSOD.

What I really need is the files in the "My Documents" folder on my 200GB HDD, the one that was corrupted and repaired. HERE IS THE PROBLEM: I had the folder made private on my old windows installation, and not password protected. when I try to get in now I get "access denied" errors because of that. I NEED to get in there in order to take the important stuff out and put it on the 160GB hard drive. afterwards I will go about trying to fix the windows installation on that drive. I appreciate all of your help ahead of time, but I do ask one thing: please don't give me help with the crash, restoring windows, or those issues, I will deal with them myself, all I need is a way to get into a private folder on one hard drive that doesnt have windows, from another hard drive that does.

Files Inaccessible From Hard Drive: Sass.exe Error, Invalid Parameter?

Jan 16, 2006

The other day on boot up I received an "lsass.exe error, invalid parameter" screen. Clicking "OK" just continued the boot up and error message in a loop. This has been a common problem for folks. Although I could not determine (due to the state of the system) if in was a virus or a corrupt file, I was finally able to coerce, after many varied attempts, an overlay install of XP Pro. However, all that was on my hard drive dissapeared (programs, settings, files).

Although, when I went to reinstall some items (Adobe Acrobat, for example) it stated that it was still resident on drive. Further, when I went to do a defrag, it stated that it was not needed (probably because of the small amount of recent installation) but the graph showed 20 gigs of space taken up (my original 18+ gigs and the new install). So, the original installed volume is still on the drive yet I can not see it or access it.

Can't Access Hard Drive / Invalid Media Type Reading Drive C

Dec 20, 2008

A little over a year ago I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad laptop from ebay for my wife. It came with Windows 2000 Professional installed and everything worked fine. No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive. When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?

Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange.

I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Assigns APIPA Address Instead Of Getting DCHP Address

Oct 12, 2006

We have run across a problem here with APIPA addressing. After we install Windows updates, Windows assigns an APIPA address in the 169.254.x.x range, instead of getting an address from the DHCP server. The effect is that the computer loses connectivity with the network and the Internet. You can confirm this problem by running an IPCONFIG and checking for an address in the 169.254 range.

Releasing and renewing the address does not correct the problem. Assigning a static IP address resolved the issue. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, we found a registry hack that will disable APIPA addressing on the computer, and this does correct the problem so the computer can connect to the network again. We assume that the problem is a result of an update from last Tuesday, but we have not determined which update is the problem. We are still looking. Our concern is that as DHCP leases expire with computers in the field, that this effect may appear. If you get calls for loss of network or Internet connectivity, have the user run IPCONFIG, and if they have an APIPA address, the registry hack is outlined in KB article
