I am running xp pro. I can not get an internet connection through my ethernet card. When I hook up my modem through usb it works fine but unable to utilize my full download speed capabilities. Hooked the modem up via ethernet to laptop and it worked just fine. The only thing I can find wrong that I don't know how to fix or what is causing it is the fact that the physical address of the card comes up as the broadcast address (FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF). Very strange.
I opened my computer and decided to goto internet through the my computer window. So I pressed home button of my key board so the My Computer window converted to a web page. But after that the address bar disappeared. I closed the window and restart the machine and opened the internet explorer, but still address bar is missing. I checked under the tools and I can see the tick infront of the address bar.
We have run across a problem here with APIPA addressing. After we install Windows updates, Windows assigns an APIPA address in the 169.254.x.x range, instead of getting an address from the DHCP server. The effect is that the computer loses connectivity with the network and the Internet. You can confirm this problem by running an IPCONFIG and checking for an address in the 169.254 range.
Releasing and renewing the address does not correct the problem. Assigning a static IP address resolved the issue. Searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base, we found a registry hack that will disable APIPA addressing on the computer, and this does correct the problem so the computer can connect to the network again. We assume that the problem is a result of an update from last Tuesday, but we have not determined which update is the problem. We are still looking. Our concern is that as DHCP leases expire with computers in the field, that this effect may appear. If you get calls for loss of network or Internet connectivity, have the user run IPCONFIG, and if they have an APIPA address, the registry hack is outlined in KB article
I am using Windows XP Home edition. How do you delete an address from the list of automatic webb address list in the Address box? I tried highlighting it and entering delete but it doesn't get deleted.

I have two computers one is running W2000 and the other is running Windows XP Home. They are both hooked up to a Linksys router. Today I cannot access the internet on the XP computer. There is an icon in the system tray and when I click on it it says acquiring network address. Could someone please tell me how to get a network address.
I now cannot access my wireless network in the house. I have a Linksys WRT54G router. The Int, WLAN & Ethernet lights are on. When I get into the home internet connections "details" on my HP, it states "acquiring IP address" and list all 0 (zeros.)
I am a new member here and not very knowledgeable in the tech stuff so any help will be appreciated. I recently formatted my hard drive. I installed XP again. I am going to install the drivers now. Before that I was just trying to connect to the internet but cant connect at all. It doesent show any ip adress and also doesent show the side icon where it shows the interenet connected. The etheren cable is in and the modem is also working. I asked the interent service provider whether the modem needs any driver and thats why its not recognizing but he said it should work. I tried shutting it down and restarting but still doesent work
Before I did a complete restore of windows home edition, I copied my windows address book to a floppy disk. Now when I go to copy the floppy back to windows address book an error occurs and it won't copy. could it have something to do with a mark that looks like this~.
I've hit a problem with Windows XP, I've looked around and I haven't been able to find anywhere which offers a potential solution, This hit my computer without warning, I switched it on this morning and it worked as normal, I was using Google Chrome, in order to browse websites that were free of spyware (the Guardian at time of crash) all of a sudden things started to freeze up. I restarted the computer, and now a lot of programs are refusing to open - Microsoft Office, among others, states "Error: There Are No More Files", whilst other programs such as Google Chrome and Internet Explorer state "Attempt to Access From Invalid Address", even when I am running them from their root folders.
Brand new, started yesterday afternoon..."Error: Access violation at 0x7C91084B (tried to write to 0x00030FFC), program terminated." So far it seems everything loaded up OK and works...not sure what program is failing because of this new error message...This type of error message is way over my understanding to know how to fix...
Repeatedly receiving access violation error and kernal32 dll errors. Als0 unable to open any help files and computer hangs frequently. There are periods on nonresponsiveness with a sudden return to commands. I am running AVG 7.5 Suite, Counterspy, Threatfire, and do frequent scans with other antivirus and malware tools.
when i type a url in the address bar the system will nt respond and also when i hit the down arrow next to the address bar to see previously visited sites the same thing happens , however if i click favorite sites the pages load up normally or if i google a site and click on it it loads normally?
I go to Start -> Accessorties -> Windows Explorer the normal Windows Explorer comes up fine, with the address bar, and everything the way I like it. However, if I go to Start -> Run -> Directory Name then Windows Explorer comes up and everything is cool except that there isn't an address bar!
I also use some shortcuts on my Quick Launch bar that point to folders; these also will open Windows explorer without an address bar. I've tried right clicking on the taskbad and selecting Address Bar, but it doesn't work.
Here is a screen capture video so you know exactly what's going on:
I think this happened when I ran AdAware. I cannot connect to my wireless internet had figured out that my IP ADDRESS is all zeros. I know my ip, I just don't know how to tell my computer what it is! If you cannot tell, I am barely literate in computers.
I am having trouble opening attachments sent to my home computer. I am able to open the same attachment when I am at work with no problem. The problem exist only when I am here at home. This is the error message that I recieve. (Internet Explorer cannot download...a7fc446983ff06b7e30f8efdace18 from whatever IP address. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later) No matter what size file it is or where it is coming from. I always get this same message. However I can go to work and download the very same file from there with no problem.
I have a new PC (EMachine) with XP Home edition operating sys.Preinstalled free 90 day McAfee antivirus program with Personal Firewall and Kill Spam applications and 60 day AOL trial(already un-installed.How can I get rid of a unwanted and annoying IP address that keeps reappearing in my incoming mail(POP3) box in Outlook Express, and temporarily blocking my in-coming mail. Out going mail not a problem.
when i log on to internet explorer my address bar doesn't any longer have my last visited web sites on it. i must have changed something but i have no idea what.
Windows 2000 (SP4) O/S.The machine will temporarily get an IP addres and then it will drop off.I have run ipconfig and been shown all 0's and then unplug then teplug the cable and get an IP address, but when I go to get on line or open a network drive it fails. I then go back and ipconfig again and it is back to 0's. I have swapped out the network cables and the user is on a new machine than previously used and is stil experiencing the same problem. When I do an ipconfig /renew it faisl with a DHCP Serer Unreachable error.
So I downloaded this program to mask my IP adress called Hide IP Platinum 3.31.I have now unstalled the program, deleted all cookies and scanned for spyware. But my PC keeps showing with an IP address from Saudi Arabia. How can I get my IP adress back.I have a 2nd computer on my network, I never installed anything on it, and that one is working fine
Hi my Computer has 256MB RAM 1.8P4 It was running all good but suddenly it has started to run VERY SLOW I have Win2000 Double-Clicking anything will take at least a min to open. Its almost impossible to copy paste using Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V The computer hangs a lot and every few minutes an error option called- "Windows System Error The computer has detected an IP conflict with another computer on the network. This may reslult in problems for network services. Contact the system Administrator."
When I try to type in the address bar of an Explorer folder (NOT IE; that works fine), the text tries to autocomplete, but then the original name of the folder seems to trump whatever I'm doing and my autocomplete type-ahead is all gone.
I had gone to a couple of gaming sites researching on some games and out of nowhere, it had popped up adult sites all over the place. I did all my spyware software and cleared out all the adult crap, but all of a sudden, they are showing up on my address dropdown list! Even after running the software, I thought that would clear them off the list.Is there anyway besides clearing out all of the history that I can get rid of the one or 2 individual adult web addresses?
A minor problem. When my "Favorites" list becomes crowded I highlight items and delete them. Simple. Now the dropdown list from my Address Bar has become crowded and I realize I don't know how to delete old items. Can't highlight and delete like the Favorites.
