This is an IBM think center with XP Pro. Symptons are random shutdowns and restarts, and constant freezeups. I checked the power supply and it smelled like it was burnt so I changed it. I replaced the HD with a new 40 gig Hard Disk and when I went to load OS it got as far as "checking system configuration and then it freezes. I cant format or reload OS.

What I would like to know is that, what would happen to my PC if the total power consumption exceeds the MAXIMUM VALUE of the power supply unit.
The Memory has been tested by PCClub and has passed the test this memory is new and fresh so nothing is wrong with the memory.What im thinking is that its the power supply because i didn't get the Power Supply my friend got the power supply at the Thirft Store (the name of it is what it is Thirft Store) now i didnt think it was messed up because it was in package and all wraped.I have some pictures but NOTE: The Pictures are when i was useing the CPU from a Compaq Presario so dont pay anything to that.
View 16 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a used IBM Thinkpad r31 2656 with Windows XP Pro Edition installed. I do not have the system CD.This machine came with a 20 GB hard drive and I wanted to upgrade to a larger 160 GB drive. I purchased a Western Digital Scorpio EIDE drive, formatted it using Disk Management into 2 partitions, E: (140 GB) and F: (approx 20 GB) and copied the contents of the original 20GB drive using Norton Ghost onto partition E: without incident.I removed the old drive and replaced it with the new one. Upon startup, I get the IBM Thinkpad screen with the BIOS F1 and F12 messages at the bottom of the screen, and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. This is as far as it goes.

View 9 Replies View Relatedcomputer for a few days you would press the start button on the tower and it wouldn't start right away but then after a few sec would come on. Yester day I tried it twice I pressed the start button on the tower and you could hear the power supply try to start but would die and the computer would not come on. so about the thired time press the button and nothing, would even try to start. I figured it was the power supply. I put a tester on the power supplyh and it said it was bad, so I bought a brand new one put it in and it still would n't do anything just dead.I tested the new one and my tester sasid it was bad, I changed it for another one and the store I bought the 1st one from tested the 1st one and there tester showed it was good, so my tester must not be working.

When i bought a new power supply it had a 24-pin connector to the motherboard. Here are a few questions since I know nothing about PSs. 1. Is there a designation (besides just manufacture preference) between 20 & 24-pin connectors to the motherboard (i.e. Pentium vs. AMD.I use AMD)? 2. Can I just buy a connector from the 24-pin connector from the PS to the 20-pin connector on my motherboard and not adversely affect my computer's power.

It looks like I have to replace the power supply unless someone has other suggestions. My question is, since I may have to replace my power supply, is it safe to replace it with one that is more than twice the wattage of the one that's in there now.

The best solution to most issues with looping is POWER SUPPLY. Due to the huge amount of resources that video cards, sound cards, larger cpu's, they suck your power supply to the point that application cant perform. In turn it causes lockup, reboot and boot to desk top.A lot of resellers are only slapping in a 300watt power supply in newer systems. That doesn't work, you need at least a 400watt or greater. You need at least 450watt POWER SUPPLY. Take my word on it.This is the biggest issue i have studied on the net and in my lab for 1 1/2 years now. So many people have taken components back to the stores had them tested, to find out there is nothing wrong with them and go around shaking there heads in wonderment, without even considering power supply.

The installation went well.But, for some reason now after I shutdown the computer in order for me to turn it back on I have to unplug it from the power supply and then plug it back in. Before i upgraded the computer I was already having a shutdown problem with Windows 98SE.Every time that I would shutdown, it would restart on its own.I tried to trouble shoot the problem.I even downloaded a patch from the Microsoft Website but it still didn't work.So i figured if i upgraded it to XP it would solve the problem, but I ended up with a different problem.

I just have a few more things to install and I have the computer plugged into the 4 plug UPS so if the power goes down the computer has 5 minutes to shut down. Well the hydro went off yesterday for a few seconds and all of the other computers came back up but the new one. It was booting into Windows got to the Windows logo and the bar going across loading then after 10 minutes still sat there. I decided to re-boot to see what was wrong as I am a computer tech. Nothing so I went into safe mode that was fine got out of there same thing logo looks like it was starting nothing. I did put in the Windows XP disk thinking to just do a repair still the same thing. I get the Windows screen like it is loading nothing. Go back to safe mode and here is what it says and there is no disk at all in the drive. Can not run setup from Safe Mode rebooting computer.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy daughter's HP dv2000t notebook computer had a motherboard crash, apparently (won't turn on). I took the hard drive out and put it into a NexStar-3 USB drive enclosure to try to salvage the iTunes and documents. The folders all show up, but when I try to access her user directory, it says that it is "empty". The properties for the hard drive also say that it the drive is almost full, so the data is all there...somewhere.Is there some kind of security that is tying the user directory to my daughter's computer and dissallowing me to tread her files on another computer? I can see how this would be a good feature if it was stolen, but when I send it back to HP for repairs, they say that they will restore the hard drive to its original condition and wipe out her investment in music, etc.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a question regarding my PC and some problems that I have been experiencing, which I think are related to my power supply.
First off, my PC will not recognize my iPod Shuffle. When I first purchased the Shuffle, everything worked fine, however one day when I went to plug it into my USB port, nothing happened and the orange light on the iPod flashed. I tried all the USB ports, including the ones on the back of the machine to no avail. This is not a problem on other people's machines, where XP is able to recognize the external device.
Also, whenever I go to shut down my computer, the light on the front of the tower is on and the fan is running. It is like the computer is not even shut down. I have to manually turn off the power strip everytime I want to shut my computer off. Also, "Stand by" is not an option on the XP menu.
I've been told this is a power supply issue. Anyone have any other ideas?
If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

I have followed the steps on re-installiing XP that was posted several times, my problem is it has been "stuck" on the wallpaper screen, with the bottom task bar loaded and the recycle bin icon present. The light indicating the drive is busy has stayed on and I can hear the disk moving. Does it normally take an hour and half to get this far after pressing the " finish" button on the install?

When I got home the computer was in standby mode and I could not get out of it so I tried to reboot the computer. It would not turn on so I checked the fan on the power supply and noticed it wasn't working so I replaced the power supply and started the computer. When it was booting up all I got was a blinking light. So I shut it down and installed my hard drive (thinking that was the culprit) into another computer that the same hard drive use to be in and it wouldnt recognize it. I checked the jumpers and the cable and all was correct.

I told XP to use the CHKDSK utility on startup, but whenever it reaches step 4 37%, it just freezes and I'm forced to restart the computer. When I restart, the same thing happens. Is there any shortcut to bypass the CHKDSK? This all started because whenever I ran a full virus scan or spyware scan I would get a BSOD In_Page_Kernel_Error... So i tried running them in safe mode and then I would get a IQL BSOD. Eventually I decided I should try to run CHKDSK and it has lead me to this dead end. If I could just figure out a shortcut to bypass it, I would be happy because the computer actually works fine, I just suspected spyware so that's why I began attempting to disinfect it.

well i have read a lot about this problem but im dont think i really found a solution so i thought i would make a new thread. Well i was just on my computer using p2p file sharing program. and then my computer froze. first the program itself and then the whole computer just froze. So i held down the power button until it turned off and then i turned it back on and then i received this error. Disk boot failure. insert system disk and press enter.
I have my stuff backed up, i used it as a secondary and i backed up the things i needed, so i dont really care that much if i need to format. The funny thing though is that it actually froze once on my brothers computer when i was transferring files and when i restarted it wouldnt boot up and when i took out my hard drive my brothers computer booted up perfectly and after it booted up perfectly i shutted it back down and then i attached my hard drive as a slave again and then it booted up.
I added a 120 gig Western Digital USB external drive and used Acronis to create a backup of my hard drive. I then used Windows XP to remove it as a USB device so I could power it off. Now, when I power it back on it is not recognized by XP and does not appear on My Computer or on Disk Management (where I originally formatted it for NTFS). All I get is a sound like a single "KERPLONK" when I power it on.
