Power Supply Checking Ways
Nov 1, 2006I brought a 400watt power supply from eBay it has the sticker on the side that lists the power but i want to make sure that it can actually give 400watts because i know that it isn't too hard to change the sticker or change the case and replace the internals with the internals of a 250-300 watt PSU are there any tools that i can use to check if the power supply can give 400 watts? it is a PSU made by ultra.

Aug 12, 2005The Memory has been tested by PCClub and has passed the test this memory is new and fresh so nothing is wrong with the memory.What im thinking is that its the power supply because i didn't get the Power Supply my friend got the power supply at the Thirft Store (the name of it is what it is Thirft Store) now i didnt think it was messed up because it was in package and all wraped.I have some pictures but NOTE: The Pictures are when i was useing the CPU from a Compaq Presario so dont pay anything to that.

Oct 12, 2006computer for a few days you would press the start button on the tower and it wouldn't start right away but then after a few sec would come on. Yester day I tried it twice I pressed the start button on the tower and you could hear the power supply try to start but would die and the computer would not come on. so about the thired time press the button and nothing, would even try to start. I figured it was the power supply. I put a tester on the power supplyh and it said it was bad, so I bought a brand new one put it in and it still would n't do anything just dead.I tested the new one and my tester sasid it was bad, I changed it for another one and the store I bought the 1st one from tested the 1st one and there tester showed it was good, so my tester must not be working.

Here are a few questions since I know nothing about PSs. 1. Is there a designation (besides just manufacture preference) between 20 & 24-pin connectors to the motherboard (i.e. Pentium vs. AMD.I use AMD)? 2. Can I just buy a connector from the 24-pin connector from the PS to the 20-pin connector on my motherboard and not adversely affect my computer's power.

Due to the huge amount of resources that video cards, sound cards, larger cpu's, they suck your power supply to the point that application cant perform. In turn it causes lockup, reboot and boot to desk top.A lot of resellers are only slapping in a 300watt power supply in newer systems. That doesn't work, you need at least a 400watt or greater. You need at least 450watt POWER SUPPLY. Take my word on it.This is the biggest issue i have studied on the net and in my lab for 1 1/2 years now. So many people have taken components back to the stores had them tested, to find out there is nothing wrong with them and go around shaking there heads in wonderment, without even considering power supply.

Aug 10, 2009I have a problem I have a new system installed Windows XP professional. Everything was ok till yesterday. I just have a few more things to install and I have the computer plugged into the 4 plug UPS so if the power goes down the computer has 5 minutes to shut down. Well the hydro went off yesterday for a few seconds and all of the other computers came back up but the new one. It was booting into Windows got to the Windows logo and the bar going across loading then after 10 minutes still sat there. I decided to re-boot to see what was wrong as I am a computer tech. Nothing so I went into safe mode that was fine got out of there same thing logo looks like it was starting nothing. I did put in the Windows XP disk thinking to just do a repair still the same thing. I get the Windows screen like it is loading nothing. Go back to safe mode and here is what it says and there is no disk at all in the drive. Can not run setup from Safe Mode rebooting computer.

Apr 2, 2006I have a question regarding my PC and some problems that I have been experiencing, which I think are related to my power supply.
First off, my PC will not recognize my iPod Shuffle. When I first purchased the Shuffle, everything worked fine, however one day when I went to plug it into my USB port, nothing happened and the orange light on the iPod flashed. I tried all the USB ports, including the ones on the back of the machine to no avail. This is not a problem on other people's machines, where XP is able to recognize the external device.
Also, whenever I go to shut down my computer, the light on the front of the tower is on and the fan is running. It is like the computer is not even shut down. I have to manually turn off the power strip everytime I want to shut my computer off. Also, "Stand by" is not an option on the XP menu.
I've been told this is a power supply issue. Anyone have any other ideas?

I tried with F8 (last valid configuration, etc of the list), but all give the same blue screen. My repair floppy disk is from september 2007. After it, I installed a second HD for files backup and needed to put drivers for Windows recognize the bigger HD size. All worked fine until the power failure this morning. Antivirus and scan are up to date. Since I installed the driver for the bigger size HD, I cannot more boot through the floppy disk, because it not recognizes the HD. Is there anything I can do to not reinstall Windows?

Checking Filesystem On C

1) Built a new computer in Oct/Nov 2006. Had been "out of the loop" in terms of computer know how, as the computer I was using at the time was going on about 6 or 7 years old. Originally I had a problem and couldn't get the computer to POST or start up, but it was because I purchased Brand X memory that wasn't "compatible" or recommended with the MOBO (never heard of a situation like this before. Always though Ram was Ram was Ram... learned my lesson.)
2) Computer runs like a dream for about 7 months. It is now around late May/June 2007. I turn the computer on and sit down on the chair and start to get comfortable. To my horror the computer enters this strange "safe mode" blue colored screen and is running some sort of check. It goes by real quick and I don't have time to read it. The computer goes past it and does not load and begins a reboot cycle.
3) Fastfoward a month and three or four full formats of the Hdd and reloads of WinXP. After each load the computer would work for a random amount of time then the same problem would occur. Repairing WinXP did nothing. Eventually I went to format the Hdd again and I started getting messages saying the formatting could not complete and the hdd could not be accessed. Figured it was a bad hdd, got it RMA'd and in the mean time purchased another one.
4) July 2007. Load new hdd into case, load WinXP. Computer runs like a dream. I love it. Runs Bf2142 flawlessly with all graphics on high... blah blah whatever the kids say these days to brag about how fast their computers are.
5) August 21st, 2007 around 11:30pm. I get home from my night shift job. Plop down and fire up the computer. The past three or four times I've started up the computer it has loaded.... "oddly". Basically the Windows load screen (blue scrolly bar, is that the technical term for it? ) would come up and then a blank screen would be up for an extended period of time (30, 40 seconds maybe? Long enough to notice. Short enough that if thats all thats going to happen I can live with it). But this time no... I get that blue "Safe Mode" looking screen. This time its slower and I can write down whats on it. Here is what it said:

and then when those three were complete it spewed a bunch of text real quick and the screen flashed (so I could not only A read it or B even look at it really), the computer reboots and loads, albeit with that slow, lagged black screen between Blue Scrolly and Desktop.
Obviously there must be a deeper problem with the computer if this is happening again with a second, completely unique hdd. There is no way I am getting two "bad" hdd... i mean, I've never really even gotten one before ever. Does anyone have any possible insight as to what could be going on here? Please help

Error Checking On HD ...
Aug 9, 2005my computer was running slow so I thought that if I ran the error-check and automatically fix options I might work better. I checked both boxes and clicked start and it said that id would check and fix the errors the next time I'd restart my computer. Now everytime I turn on my computer it aks me which OS I wanna run (Windows xp home or windows xp home (bootscreen)). I want this to stop, as it really annoys me to wait some extra time every time I turn my computer on, I already tried to uncheck the boxes (Local drive C: Tools) but they were already unchecked. The OS question continues to occur whenever I restart or turn the computer on. How do I fix this?

Jul 6, 2006I am trying to get BitPim to work, for those of you who don't know it is an application that will give you access to your cell phone so you can create your own ringtones and what not.
The problem is that it keeps telling me that the COM port is not available.
Is there a way for me to run any report that will tell me what applications are using what COM ports, or how to make a COM port available.
any suggestion?
Checking FSB Speed
Feb 24, 2005Is there a way in XP, or in BIOS on a computer running XP, to check the actual FSB speed? Is it indicated in BIOS? I have a vague memory of checking it once but I can't remember if I checked it on the machine or just read the number in the manual.
If BIOS, or another source on the machine, tells you an FSB speed, is that the actual current clocked speed, or is that some kind of factory standard number that the MoBo provides as a spec?
I'm having some confusion as to what my actual FSB speed is. The manual says it's 400 on some Dimension 2400 machines but 266 on mine, but I swear I read XP or BIOS telling me it was 400. If there's a way to check directly I'd like to do that.
