After the sweep I have 100-150 MB less available memory than when it started, which is only corrected by a system restart. I only noticed the problem after I had been online with my MSN dial-up during which a system sweep had occurred. Any feedback and reply would be greatly appreciated.

The problem is this:
I purchased Everquest from gamestop, installed it and tried to burn the exe to a disk (it was a download purchase) so I could delete the file that was eating up a lot of space. I created the file to burn it to the cd and then went to delete it but the recycle bin froze. The laptop started running slower and slower and I noticed that my free space was getting progressively smaller (i.e. had 11 gigs went down to 8, went into safe mode to try to delete the files from the recycling bin and rebooted and it went down to 5). Now the files are in a folder called hidden_files/recycler and the clean disk doesn't recognize the recycling bin as having files to remove. When I open the bin it freezes up and I'm still losing memory.
I tried using the following to delete the files in the command prompt but it said file path not valid.
1.Open a command prompt window
2.Type cd recycled
3.Type attrib -h inf*
4.Type del info
5. Restart Windows
Every time I try to delete the files it freezes up or acts like they were deleted but upon searching for the files they are still there and my memory is still really low.
I'm willing to post anything that may be needed to resolve this problem just let me know (as I don't know what would be helpful here or what to run and post logs of).
My computer started to lose its memory. I have had to remove items just to keep it running. Even though i don't have any big games in the computer i only have 2% free space left. I don't add anything but I still lose memory. I have run 2 virus programs (trend and super anti spyware) and a lot of problems were deleted.

View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery music folder in My Music after C (cameo!) has disapeared although I know they are still there - i can still play them in itunes and even open the song folder but if I copy it and drop it back into My Music it vanishes. Windows doesn't even recognise the memory that the missing files use and thinks the folder holds 3 gigs when its more like 30. Just wondering if there is anything I can try before going through the hassle of reformating.

View 14 Replies View RelatedOn Friday, I allowed the computer to install a number of security upgrades as well as a malicious software removal tool from MS. Since that reboot, the following things have happened: Got warning about failure of write back cache Blue screen about kernel that MS reported was due to bad HD. Finally able to boot into safe mode and found no HD errors. Thought registry corrupted, so tried to redo with a reload on top of the XP Pro but the program said it is older than that on computer (probably SP2) and won't let me reload.

I updated SpySweeper to the newest version. My computer is now SLOW so i tried to uninstall it. I tried doing so through Add/Remove Programs. Also tried going through 'start,run'..then locating the file to uninstall. I get the following 'Cannot uninstall - Runtime Error (at 219.73) could not proc.'SO tried going through Safe Mode and then my computer started running CHKDSK, which came back with about 20+ unreadable file segments the just started back in Normal mode. I also tried ctrl alt&delete to stop spysweeper processes and that says "access is denied'.
I am using Intel pentium 4 cpu 2.40GHz, 1.25 GB RAM. Iam using 80 GB samsung hard disk.
I installed Microsoft Windows XP Professional service pack 2 on a drive of 10 GB memory space with NTFS file system.
After the installation of Win XP, the drive properties shows 4.9 GB of used memory and only 4.45 GB of free memory, but when I try to find total memory occupied for all the files in that drive (using "select-all" and properties) the used memory is only 2.3 GB only.
Now I don't understand the huge difference of this memories calculations. Where that extra used memory gone, when the total memory occupied by all the files is much less.
i am having a problem with windows xp not reading my full system memory it is in the bios but windows just one day decided to stop reading a full one gig instead it decided to read 256 megs of ram i've replaced the memory sticks five times now and i know i havent baught that many bad sticks of memory is there any way i can get windows to read the memory since i know the memory has to be good since the bios is reading the full memory i've even the a f-disc and reformat thinking that would fix it

View 7 Replies View RelatedI added 1GB to an existing 1Gb of RAM but it is not being reconized by the computer.I have 3 slots and the 512MB chips are closest to the CPU.The Everest utility only shows 1GB of RAM,plug'n'play is enabled if that makes a difference. It feels and looks like the chip is well seated.The chips is by the same company (PNY) and it is a PC2700 DDR just like the existing 512s.
I recently purchased additional memory, 2 sticks of 256mb PC133, for my HP computer. I currently have 2x128mb and this has worked since I bought my computer about 3 years
ago. My problem is that when I install both the new sticks, 512 total, the system refuses to boot into Windows and gives a FATAL SYSTEM ERROR. I don't get this

SVCHOST.EXE / SYSTEM is duplicated in running processes , and it's using all my CPU usage on startup/logon (this process takes several minutes).Never mind the same process for 'local service', and 'network service'. They don't consume CPU usage - see attached.This started when I upgraded to Defender, from MS Antispyware. To upgrade, I had to authenticate the OS , install SP 2 , then install the new app . Took over an hour I noticed too many new things changing in the appearance (and don't like Defender), so I did a sys restore for the day before the install. No problems at all, 'til the next day. Slow boot, slow authentication for logon, etc.

Is this normal?I seem to recall not too long ago restore points at best were like maybe 4 or 5 in a month.I have close to 200GB in 2 hard drives, and 1K of memory if that helps.I did notice that the slider for my System Restore memory is at the max of 12%. I assume thats normal?

I recently reformatted my computer and before the reformat it only took up less than 200k memory. View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm have a Compaq Presario 2596US notebook running Windows XP.It uses DDR333 pc2700 sodimm. I had a 256mb and a 512mb chip installed, and had 768 total ram. I ordered a 1gb chip (transcend, from newegg), and the laptop won't recognize it.
I've tried running the 512 and the 1gb chip, the 256 and the 1gb chip, and the 1gb chip alone. With either of the smaller chips installed plus the 1gb chip, the system memory is equal to the smaller chip. With just the 1gb chip installed (tried both sockets), the laptop won't boo just spins out on the 'ol black screen of death

View 3 Replies View RelatedI do document conversions. I work with MS Word files anywhere from 6MB to 23MB in size. If I reboot the computer and start a processing task I get no hangs. However, the longer I work on a task like a "find and replace", the slower the computer's processing gets and then I run out of virtual memory. When run out of virtual memory, I can no longer save the file.
Is there a way to reset or empty out the memory of my computer system without rebooting the system? I can copy and paste a small amount of text like a comma, but that does not help the memory problem. Edited to correct spelling error.
At bootup, I get the message that windows can't create a virtual memory page or it is set too low.I have tried resetting the virtual memory in the Control Panel>System (Nothing works-Windows recommends 768M but only reports 256M. Setting the Min/Max has no effect.I have checked security in Explorer's Security Tab (in Safe Mode) and it is set for Everyone > Full Control.I have tried "spf /scannow" - no effect.I have no "pagefile.sys" in the C drive root directory (the "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.)I have looked and followed the various links that have been suggested and nothing seems to help. The various register cleaners all report tons of errors. Are any of these worth the $20 to $40? Will they fix my problem? If the only solution is to reinstall Windows, should I wait for Vista and start over with it? Will Vista run on a 4 year old laptop?
