Added Memory Not Reconized By System
Mar 10, 2007
I added 1GB to an existing 1Gb of RAM but it is not being reconized by the computer.I have 3 slots and the 512MB chips are closest to the CPU.The Everest utility only shows 1GB of RAM,plug'n'play is enabled if that makes a difference. It feels and looks like the chip is well seated. The chips is by the same company (PNY) and it is a PC2700 DDR just like the existing 512s.

I received more memory after researching what my computer needed. I have an old MSI motherboard with 512mb and 2 empty slots so we bought 1 more 512 and installed it. In My Computer under properties it shows now as pentium 4 cpu 1.60ghz 1.60ghz, 1gb RAM.
When looking at used and free space it still shows used space as: 16.6gb free space:20.5 gb and capacity:37.2gb. Which was the same with just having the 512mb of RAM

Per "My Computer", the drives are: C:= 200 gig, File: system NTSF. D:= 8.5gig (A partition on the C Drive, it contains HP_Recovery), File: system FAT32. E:= LightScribe DVD/CD Burner/Player, F:= My "Back-up" HD, 160 gig, Seagate Ultra ATA/100, File: system NTSF. G, H, I & J are available for future use.
I backed up all my files etc. from my old PC (Windows Me upgraded to XP) onto the 160 gig HD. The "Back-up" HD was the slave in my old PC. It contains Files etc. there is no Operating System on it.
After installing the "Back-up" HD in the new PC I get an "Error loading OS" message when I boot-up. If I turn off the PC, wait 60 seconds and then turn it on it loads OK and yes I can access the 2nd HD, copy files and paste them into the new 200 gig HD etc.

Recently added a wireless card and put it on my home network. It ran fine for a couple of weeks, but now it is running painfully slow. Just booting the machine and getting the start menu to come up takes forever. Every application is painfully slow and I am unable to connect to my network.

I am using Intel pentium 4 cpu 2.40GHz, 1.25 GB RAM. Iam using 80 GB samsung hard disk.
I installed Microsoft Windows XP Professional service pack 2 on a drive of 10 GB memory space with NTFS file system.
After the installation of Win XP, the drive properties shows 4.9 GB of used memory and only 4.45 GB of free memory, but when I try to find total memory occupied for all the files in that drive (using "select-all" and properties) the used memory is only 2.3 GB only.
Now I don't understand the huge difference of this memories calculations. Where that extra used memory gone, when the total memory occupied by all the files is much less.

I replaced my original HD with a new, bigger one, installed Windows XP - everything was ok until then. Then, when I verified that everything worked fine I installed the old HD again, this time as a slave.I needed to retrieve some files from it and then I was going to format it and use it as a storage. In the process of installing it,I had to remove the floppy drive, because there was not enough space inside. It wasn't working anyway and I haven't used it in months. Everythings seemed to go fine, the pc saw the second HD, I was able to copy files from it,but when I wanted to install some software on the new HD I realized that Windows Explorer couldn't see any of my 2 CD-ROMs.It's as if they are not hooked up to my computer.
The funniest thing is if I go to device manager, it doesn't show the CD drives, but shows floppy drive and says it is working properly! And it's not even there! Just realized that Explorer also shows floppy A in My Computer. How is it possible? And what happened to my CD drives? At first I thought I accidentaly disconnected the wires when I was hooking up the second HD, but they work mechanically, ie. the light blinks when I start the computer,

I had problems with my anti virus that the help desk said required a Windows repair. I did this but now all my setting etc have disappeared.
What I can see is that when I look at 'Documents and settings' there are extra users directories.
These are:
All Users
All Users.Windows
Defaults Users
Default Users.Windows
I now have 3 Network Services NT
I also have two directories of me.
I can delete them using explorer.

I recently purchased additional memory, 2 sticks of 256mb PC133, for my HP computer. I currently have 2x128mb and this has worked since I bought my computer about 3 years
ago. My problem is that when I install both the new sticks, 512 total, the system refuses to boot into Windows and gives a FATAL SYSTEM ERROR. I don't get this
error with the 128mb memory, or even when mixing for a total of 384. The memory is from Crucial.com and I have run diagnostics on all sticks with no problems. I have
all the lastest Windows, BIOS, and hardware updates available, and still it crashes

SVCHOST.EXE / SYSTEM is duplicated in running processes , and it's using all my CPU usage on startup/logon (this process takes several minutes).Never mind the same process for 'local service', and 'network service'. They don't consume CPU usage - see attached. This started when I upgraded to Defender, from MS Antispyware. To upgrade, I had to authenticate the OS , install SP 2 , then install the new app . Took over an hour I noticed too many new things changing in the appearance (and don't like Defender), so I did a sys restore for the day before the install. No problems at all, 'til the next day. Slow boot, slow authentication for logon, etc.

i have a computer running windows xp sp1. it has p4 1.7 cpu and 1g ddr sdram memory.recently i noticed that the computer was very slow in opening up programs or some other simple operations. i have norton anti virus running all the time, so it should not be virus. i also scanned the system using adaware and every thing seemed ok.so i am just wondering if it could be the memory, as i am using two memory with different speed, one 512 at 2100, and the other at 2700.

I have XP.I've noticed that my System restore has created restore points almost on a daily basis. Is this normal?I seem to recall not too long ago restore points at best were like maybe 4 or 5 in a month.I have close to 200GB in 2 hard drives, and 1K of memory if that helps.I did notice that the slider for my System Restore memory is at the max of 12%. I assume thats normal?

I'm have a Compaq Presario 2596US notebook running Windows XP.It uses DDR333 pc2700 sodimm. I had a 256mb and a 512mb chip installed, and had 768 total ram. I ordered a 1gb chip (transcend, from newegg), and the laptop won't recognize it.
I've tried running the 512 and the 1gb chip, the 256 and the 1gb chip, and the 1gb chip alone. With either of the smaller chips installed plus the 1gb chip, the system memory is equal to the smaller chip. With just the 1gb chip installed (tried both sockets), the laptop won't boo just spins out on the 'ol black screen of death

What does this mean? This message showed up today when I was trying to start the calculator! The same thing happened when I started Nero Express calc.exe Illegal System DLL Relocation. The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:WINDOWSsystem32SHELL32.dll occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.I tried to reinstall nero but the same message appear.

I want to add these to my existing setup, where i will keep the 2 hard drives, the 2 dvd drives, floppy, and sound card. ONe of the Hard Drives has WinXp on it. Will there be any problems by doing this? Will the OS be ok with recognizing the new hardware? Will Windows complain about authentication?

I've had this Compaq since 2004. I've added a gig of RAM, a 250gb SATA HDD, and a 6600GT card.
Anyway, I want to do a clean install of XP, which I've never done. I've cleared a bunch of space on my 250gb HD and transfered all the files im going to keep from C: to the 250gb.
So my question is what will happen to my 250gb drive? Do I have to disconnect it? Will XP recognize it after the clean install? What about the extra RAM and 6600gt?

I recently reloaded windows xp from scratch in a 2004 dell inspiron laptop using Dell cd's. It was working fine with sp2, but later I added sp3 and now computer takes about 5 minutes to open an application (anything from MSOffice apps to web browsers to anything else. After it finally comes up, it works slow but doable.
I would like to know what are the things I should be looking at that could be slowing the process so much. Is sp3 related? I'd rater not remove sp3 since all the applications were loaded after sp3 was installed

My operating system is totally screwed. Tried everything to fix. I am going to re-install - wiping out all old data - fresh start. I've backed up all files and programs I don't want to lose to DVD. It's been so long since I've done this. On win 98, I used FORMAT C:, but I see XP gives you the option to install over existing(defective) system, while removing it. I'm pretty sure I need to remove all added hardware and replace with original before re-install (Video card, dvd burner, Ethernet card). Then after re-install is complete - re-install each new piece 1 by one - Is that correct ?

I added a new 250 gig ATA Seagate drive to my son's EMachine 2882. I added it as a Slave drive (setting jumper to slave and placing on the end of the parallel cable) to use for backing up purposes.Everything is fine, I think. Went into Disk Management and attempted to partition the un allocated new disk. For some strange reason, everytime I try to partition the disk it appears to be (not sure) but it appears to be creating 8 megabyte partitions? Do I have some setting in the BIOS that needs tweaking? I am not a total idiot, but I am beginning to wonder! Can anyone please get me on the right track here? XP does recognize the Seagate drive but something is screwy with the formatting process.
