I'm getting a new motherboard, Processor, Ram, and Graphics Card.
I want to add these to my existing setup, where i will keep the 2 hard drives, the 2 dvd drives, floppy, and sound card. ONe of the Hard Drives has WinXp on it. Will there be any problems by doing this? Will the OS be ok with recognizing the new hardware? Will Windows complain about authentication?
Dell desktop running Windows XP SP2 is reporting an application error on a regular basis. Especially when trying to install new programs. It seems event errors have the ntdll.dll in common.

This was just to double check that the system I was working on was absolutely up to date.Automatic update was set to Auto. Windows update website informed me that a critical update was required. it turned out to be the Windows Bogus (Genuine) Advantage Authentication... I had no choice but to Activate the system before I was allowed to continue checking for updates. Bloody cheek! passing off this 'Genuine advantage authentication' as a critical update. One day I am bound to come across a system that does not pass this authentication. Will the system be usable or will they lock the system until I have made a groveling phone call or worse have to inform my customer/neighbour/friend of a friend that "Sorry I know you just wanted me to check your system was up to date but now you must pay £200 for an Operating system"
I have a laptop(dell latitude cpi) my kid entered a password and now I can't access windows. Every time I turn it on a message comes on saying:This computer system#xxxxx is protected by a password authentication system you can not access the data without the correct password Please type in the primary or administrator password. My kid does not remember what password he used. Does any body Knows how to remove the password since I can not access the bios either?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI replaced my original HD with a new, bigger one, installed Windows XP - everything was ok until then. Then, when I verified that everything worked fine I installed the old HD again, this time as a slave.I needed to retrieve some files from it and then I was going to format it and use it as a storage.In the process of installing it,I had to remove the floppy drive,because there was not enough space inside.It wasn't working anyway and I haven't used it in months. Everythings seemed to go fine, the pc saw the second HD, I was able to copy files from it,but when I wanted to install some software on the new HD I realized that Windows Explorer couldn't see any of my 2 CD-ROMs.It's as if they are not hooked up to my computer.
The funniest thing is if I go to device manager, it doesn't show the CD drives, but shows floppy drive and says it is working properly! And it's not even there! Just realized that Explorer also shows floppy A in My Computer.How is it possible? And what happened to my CD drives?At first I thought I accidentaly disconnected the wires when I was hooking up the second HD, but they work mechanically, ie. the light blinks when I start the computer,

I received more memory after researching what my computer needed. I have an old MSI motherboard with 512mb and 2 empty slots so we bought 1 more 512 and installed it. In My Computer under properties it shows now as pentium 4 cpu 1.60ghz 1.60ghz, 1gb RAM.
When looking at used and free space it still shows used space as: 16.6gb free space:20.5 gb and capacity:37.2gb. Which was the same with just having the 512mb of RAM
I had problems with my anti virus that the help desk said required a Windows repair. I did this but now all my setting etc have disappeared.
What I can see is that when I look at 'Documents and settings' there are extra users directories.

I also have two directories of me.
I can delete them using explorer.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to password protect a folder so that if someone got to snooping around my system they would have to put in a password to veiw the contence of the folder? Is there a program I have to use?

I added 1GB to an existing 1Gb of RAM but it is not being reconized by the computer.I have 3 slots and the 512MB chips are closest to the CPU.The Everest utility only shows 1GB of RAM,plug'n'play is enabled if that makes a difference. It feels and looks like the chip is well seated.The chips is by the same company (PNY) and it is a PC2700 DDR just like the existing 512s.

Anyway, I want to do a clean install of XP, which I've never done. I've cleared a bunch of space on my 250gb HD and transfered all the files im going to keep from C: to the 250gb.
So my question is what will happen to my 250gb drive? Do I have to disconnect it? Will XP recognize it after the clean install? What about the extra RAM and 6600gt?
I recently reloaded windows xp from scratch in a 2004 dell inspiron laptop using Dell cd's. It was working fine with sp2, but later I added sp3 and now computer takes about 5 minutes to open an application (anything from MSOffice apps to web browsers to anything else. After it finally comes up, it works slow but doable.
I would like to know what are the things I should be looking at that could be slowing the process so much. Is sp3 related? I'd rater not remove sp3 since all the applications were loaded after sp3 was installed
My operating system is totally screwed. Tried everything to fix. I am going to re-install - wiping out all old data - fresh start. I've backed up all files and programs I don't want to lose to DVD. It's been so long since I've done this. On win 98, I used FORMAT C:, but I see XP gives you the option to install over existing(defective) system, while removing it. I'm pretty sure I need to remove all added hardware and replace with original before re-install (Video card, dvd burner, Ethernet card). Then after re-install is complete - re-install each new piece 1 by one - Is that correct ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI added a new 250 gig ATA Seagate drive to my son's EMachine 2882. I added it as a Slave drive (setting jumper to slave and placing on the end of the parallel cable) to use for backing up purposes.Everything is fine, I think. Went into Disk Management and attempted to partition the un allocated new disk. For some strange reason, everytime I try to partition the disk it appears to be (not sure) but it appears to be creating 8 megabyte partitions? Do I have some setting in the BIOS that needs tweaking? I am not a total idiot, but I am beginning to wonder! Can anyone please get me on the right track here? XP does recognize the Seagate drive but something is screwy with the formatting process.

The program searched my HDD for all types of audio files and added them to my Library. What happened next was a complete blunder on my part: what I did was go through each file in my Library and delete those that I didn't want and keep those I did. I didn't pay any attention to what I was deleting, and I believe what I did has to do with a disk problem I'm havin'. I don't think my computer recognizes my D drive anymore (excuse me, please, I don't know much-- I mean the drive that plays DVDs/CDs). When I view My Computer, the D drive isn't displayed. Another example: when I'm in WMP and tryin' to copy tracks from a CD onto my HDD, there isn't a D drive listed to upload from.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I bought my new pc with XP SP2 I added a second hard drive(FAT 32) that I'd already used for a while in my old pc, and that contains all my data, photo's, music etc. Everything worked fine, but over the past month something strange is happening. From one moment to the other Windows loses sight of that second drive. Sometimes restarting (in every possible way) helps, sometimes not. Sometimes the drive disappears when I'm saving omething to it, sometimes I can save.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor several months I have had a problem with windows xp restarting - a stop error - caused by- according to Microsoft (when I report the error) - a device driver. the only device with new drivers that I have added is the video card. The problem has recently gotten worse - the computer now either restarts or freezes after 20 - 25 minutes (it even did this when I was operating in Safe mode). HP tech support suggested that I remove the video card and see what happens - result was the same. I suspect some type of hardware problem. Hp support receommends I do a system restore and that if the computer shuts down during the process I will know it's not the operating system
View 1 Replies View RelatedPer "My Computer", the drives are: C:= 200 gig, File: system NTSF. D:= 8.5gig (A partition on the C Drive, it contains HP_Recovery), File: system FAT32. E:= LightScribe DVD/CD Burner/Player, F:= My "Back-up" HD, 160 gig, Seagate Ultra ATA/100, File: system NTSF. G, H, I & J are available for future use.
I backed up all my files etc. from my old PC (Windows Me upgraded to XP) onto the 160 gig HD. The "Back-up" HD was the slave in my old PC. It contains Files etc. there is no Operating System on it.
After installing the "Back-up" HD in the new PC I get an "Error loading OS" message when I boot-up. If I turn off the PC, wait 60 seconds and then turn it on it loads OK and yes I can access the 2nd HD, copy files and paste them into the new 200 gig HD etc.
I added a 512mb stick and 500gb hard drive to an AMD 1.7mhz system that was running fine but just out of disk space (figured as long as the chassis was open to throw in the ram too). Now I can barely use the darn thing. Runs extremely slow. Audio and video and useless, responses are crazy - even the mouse is herky-jerky. Went into taskmanager and there is one program that seems to be using a lot of processor time but I alway have that one running even in the 'old' configuration. I can kill it and it helps a little bit but why should more resources make things worse. I have AVG running for virus checking and regularly run adaware and spybot for malware checking. Checked system settings and everything looks fine there as well - cache, VM, performance, etc. all set to normal levels (768mb by the way).

Aps take a good 30 seconds to open as do web pages. There is the odd time where something will open quickly (seems random) but not too often. I ran Hijack this, spybot and adaware and found nothing nothing to find.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI seem to have bad luck with multiple partitions on one drive. I have a 160 gb hdd that was partitoned with one approx 137gb partition with windows xp. It was working fine. I decided to partition the remaining space which was something like 25gb. I did it from windows xp in the disk managment snap-in. It worked fine until I formatted the new 25gb partition and assigned the page file to this drive. I had not rebooted before formatting the new drive and I believe the format is what screwed up the drive. I have tried to chkdsk /r but it took forever and then crashed. I believe windows improperly sized the partition over part of the original C partition. I really hate logical drives. I always seem to have some sort of data loss with them..
View 13 Replies View RelatedIm running XP, SP2, IE6.0-I like to keep my startup items down to a bare minimum, and this morning when checking on them in Spybot I noticed a new WinLogon had been added at the bottom (called "Schedule", file name "Schedule.exe"). Its the only one of that winlogon group that Spybot identifies, and what they say is it's by user preference. The official name is, Mercury EZ View TV Tuner Card--1, we do not have a tv to be used with this, 2., we never did. 3, my husband said he never installed this (much less heard of it) and 4, when I try to disable it, citing user preference, it won't go away. I know it's not spam or adware, but when something as apparently innocuous as this appears and will not disappear (no its not listed in the Add/Remove Programs) or at least allow itself to be disabled, I have to wonder why. It also does not show up in the HiJack list log, or as Badware in Spybot. Should I hunt this down and shoot it dead, or should I just ignore it?
