SP3 Computer Loses Funcionality After Joining Domain
Jul 13, 2010
I currently look after a network of 20 computers, some running windows 7 and most running XP sp3 (32+64bit) Mine is 32bit.
I joined my computer to the domain after a fresh install of XP. Here are where the problems started. After about 15 minutes I lost internet connection. About 20 minutes later the computer could not open or close any programs without killing the process. Then I lost network connection and was left with only the task manager running and no explorer open. I managed to install SP3 after downloading it on a seperate computer and running it on a disk.

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 9100 Laptop, Win XP Pro. It was joined to a domain for a couple years. It has gone to a new home (same owner tho) and we wanted to disjoin the domain and join a workgroup. On the reboot, the machine won't accept any login or passwords that used to work I tried to 'test' the local login before I originally dis-joined the domain but the domain admin had disabled local logins. I think that is where I went wrong and I know it's my fault and now I just want to get to the 'My Documents' folder so I moved the laptop drive over to a desktop (using an adapter) and I can 'see' the drive in BIOS and it is detected in Windows but the drive has no drive letter

I am having a challenge making a Windows XP workstation part of a Small Business Server 2003 domain; both are relatively fresh OS installs. The WinXP box was placed on line before the SBS and has been running through (2 NICs) the SBS to the internet as a "Workgroup:" computer. Now that I am ready to join the WinXP to the SBS as a "Domain:" computer I find a terrific challenThe first indication of a challenge came when the SBS <http://<sbs2003ServerName>/connectcomputer> ran into errors. It would place itself on the workstation with the user indent, "__sbs_netsetup__",

When I try to join a domain with a XP Pro client to a Windows 2K3 server and after going through Control Panel>System and entering the domain name and my Adminstrator credentials, I get "The following error occured when attempting to join the domain "computerlab.net": The account specified for the service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."The Administrator account for both server and client is identical if that affects it all? I seem to be very close to success except for this error message.

I am trying to join an imaged workstation to a W2k3 domain and am receiving "Unknown user name or bad password". I know the account and password are good because I used the same info to join a server to the domain without a problem. Also when I change the workgroup name it doesn't ask for a username and password.

I have a computer that has been running XP pro for a long time. I would like
to join it to a domain, but have found out by experience that my "domain
user" and my "workgroup user" are two completely different people. Can I use
the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer my "workgroup user"
settings to my "domain user" settings and then delete my "workgroup user?"
Are there any security concerns (e.g. run as administrator) that I need to be
aware of

A while back before I knew better I gave a client of mine an active directory domain that ended in .org and did not exist on the internet at the time. Now, I'm discovering in the DNS event log at regular intervals errors about how the computers in the internal domain are unable to register in the DNS server of the web domain of the same name. So, my question is whether there is something I can do to change the Active Directory domain so that I don't get those errors anymore.
They're running Windows 2003 server standard with Active Directory, roaming profiles, routing and remote access for VPN, DHCP server, standard fileserver, and print server. I may have missed one or two things but likely I haven't. The server has itself as the primary DNS server though it's not the 127 address it's the actual IP. The secondary server is the router but I have the DHCP giving out the servers for opendns.com as options 3 and 4 after the Domain Controller and the router but I had the problem before adding the opendns.com entries.

I so screwed up tonight. I was trying to get rid of some nasty dll files that my sisters pc had been infected with..and they just would not go away.I got frustrated and went into the registry and started deleting any reference to these dll files and am now in deep trouble.I restarted windows (xp home version) and attempted to log in. Got an error that the system could not log me in because the domain "sallyslaptop" is not available. I tried booting into safemode, tried (unsuccessfully) to access the setup/bios (not that getting there would have helped me i don't think..) and just cannot get back into any kind of windows environment. she has huge projects due at school and all her data is there!! If i can just get to her documents and save those, then I will be happy. If i have to reload windows an dstuff, fine...just as long as i can retain her documents!

I have an admin account for the network domain I am not able to change a computer name without first removing the computer from the domain and joining a workgroup. Is changing a computer name a specific permission that the network administrator can grant to my account? Also, since I've been removing and then rejoining computers to the domain I hit the limit on the number of times I can join a computer to a domain. Where is this number defined, and reset?

My computer has been doing this for awhile, it works fine, I can watch videos on it and everything, then I go play a game (Call of Duty 4 on max graphics) then after a minute or two my monitor would go blank (Blue in this case since its HDMI) and lose the signal to the graphics card, The connector isn't loose, nor is power and I must reboot to get the signal back.I have upgraded the computer with this graphics card, I did uninstall old drivers but maybe not fully.Another perhaps unrelated problem is that whenever I restart, it no longer detects my graphics card, resolution: 800x600, 4-bit, I must uninstall all my drivers, then reinstall them and it fixes the problem.

I have a dual monitor setup on my PC. Today, when I boot it up, the main monitor displayed all theboot information and startup stuff, however, when the system SHOULD have gotten to the user login screen, the main montor came up with "no signal." The secondary monitor at this time will still show my mouse moving around on it, and I'm able to move the mouse over to the main monitor but I can't see anything.I've gone through a few basic manuevers to see what was wrong. I booted in safe mode and logged in to my mai account and attempted to change the other monitor to the main one; However, Safe Mode does not appear to supoort multi-monitor and I couldn't change this. After that, I attempted to VNC into my computer with the notebook I'm on now. When I came to the login dialogue box, the only account I could log into was the invisible "Administrator" account. My main account, as well as a temporary account I created for testing, both came up with an error "Cannot access due to user restrictions." My theory is that because all of the accounts which are actually visible on the login screen seem to not be working, the login is bugging and not outputting anything to my main monitor (since I have verified both monitors and connections to be working properly).

My main computer's (XP, SP3) Internet connection is shared among 3 other machines via ICS. However, one machine (XP, SP3) - which runs a couple of P2P programs - usually loses its connectivity (even file sharing) after a few days. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security on the main computer. I've tried disabling it (for testing purposes) to no avail. I've also disabled Windows Firewall on both machines with no improvement. Using a router is pointless because it freezes after a few days (due to the P2P programs). I've tried 4 or 5 different routers (even the "good" brands).
Is it simply an overload in terms of the number of connections possible? Does ICS, in principle, face the same problems as a typical router? Because I've even tried reducing the number of P2P programs to just one and also limiting the number of connections it makes. (Not to mention "fixing" the 'tcpip.sys' limit on both machines.) Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it?

My mouse keeps hanging up and clock loses time when not running in safe mode. Not just the mouse really, but nothing at all works. When I boot normally (not into safe mode), windows can take forever to load due to this. On last boot my clock lost 10 out of 15 minutes uptime and I had to manually power off even then. I am running Windows XP Service pack 2 on a AMD Athlon 64 3800+ system with 1214 mb mem 150 gig hdd.

I can continue using the IE open window, but to get my other programs back I have to shut down. The desktop wallpaper still remains.

This is a Windows XP sp3 domain connected PC with one specific user, which all of a sudden takes 2.5mins to log in to the domain, Where it used to take just about 20 seconds. Other users on the same PC is all OK 20sec login This is not the usual where it hangs at "applying computer settings" or "personal settings" it's after those two has passed that it just hangs for a couple of minutes.
All i get is the mouse pointer (not even hourglass) and the desktop wallpaper for about 2-3 minutes. When it finally logs in everything is as quick as you would expect that spec of PC to be (1,6ghz Sempron, 1gb RAM, 40gb IDE-100 HDD)

I can browse the Internet and everything under "ipconfig /all" looks right. Is this a problem on the XP machine or the NT 4.0 server?
