Network Domain - Administrator Permissions - Change Computer Name
Jun 21, 2005
I have an admin account for the network domain I am not able to change a computer name without first removing the computer from the domain and joining a workgroup. Is changing a computer name a specific permission that the network administrator can grant to my account? Also, since I've been removing and then rejoining computers to the domain I hit the limit on the number of times I can join a computer to a domain. Where is this number defined, and reset?

I was attempting to set permissions on my two NTFS formatted external harddrives and essentially deny users and guests the right to create/delete any files on the drive but I guess it somehow managed to restrict that right for EVERYONE. Not even in safe mode as the Adminstrator can I even look at the permissions and apparently it will not even allow me to open any files either. I cannot copy files to another drive and I cannot open or run any executables. Is there any way at all for me to reset the permissions for this particular drive or perhaps alter them to work the way that they rest of them work for me. I can't for the life of me understand how the Administrator cannot access the files on a folder and I don't exactly know what higher privileged user type exists. I really don't want to have to reformat the drive because it's got about 350 gigs of videos/music/programs.

I recently tried to update my graphics driver (intel 910GL Express chipset). For some reason there was a glitch, so because there was a slight problem with my display I decided to use System Restore to go back to the previous day's configuration (the rollback function in Device Manager didn't work). This worked fine, but now every time I boot up the machine I get a box entitled 'Restriction Warning'. The blurb says: Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD-ROM drives. (This box appeared even before I used System Restore). And yes, both the floppy drive and the dvd drive have big red circles and a diagonal line through them when I double-click on 'My Computer'. They are inaccessible, even though I'm logged on as Administrator.

My 13 yr old daughter has been given and old laptop running Xp Pro, but can only log in as a user. The laptop belonged to to our health service ( mother is a nurse ) and the IT dept are the administrators but will not remove any permissions. This means i cannot load any routers hardware or software to get on the internet. When trying to load a BT ISP disc the comment "No administrator privilages declared". My question is there a way of me removing the administrator account or getting around the problem. The laptop did not come with a sytem disc so cannot reinstall Xp pro. I have a windows system disc Xp home for my desktop but presume it can be used on that one machine.

I can access the BASEMENT printers and files from the LAPTOP. I can access the LAPTOP files from the BASEMENT. The OFFICE PC shows up in the workgroup computers list on both the LAPTOP and BASEMENT PC, but I receive the "YOU MAY NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THIS NETWORK RESOURCE" message when I click on it. And I cannot access the LAPTOP or BASEMENT files from the OFFICE.

When I try to access my desktop from my laptop and desktop to laptop, I keep getting a message that says that I do not have access permissions to network resources. I set up my network, enabled file/printer sharing, and configured firewalls to allow the network. My network has been working fine for about a year now until just recently. (I didn't install anything new, and I keep both computers updated everyday.)

Our network consists of five Win XP computers networked to a separate server machine running on Linux with a SAMBA interface that provides IMAP e-mail service, full internet access, and full inter-communication between the five resident computers so any one of them can be used interchangeably by users. We have about 150 residents registered but only a fraction of those use the computers regularly.is there some Win XP permission that will allow us to access these settings. We really don't know whether our problem lies in the server, in the SAMBA interface, or some subtle difference in the way Win XP handles user privileges compared to Win 2000.

Can someone let me know how to configure a Windows 2003 domain user as a local administrator on a XP Professional client. I have set the same user ID up for the user on the local PC with administrator rights and when I log into the PC locally this works fine. When I log into the PC as a domain user the user has user rights and not local Administrator.

When I try to join a domain with a XP Pro client to a Windows 2K3 server and after going through Control Panel>System and entering the domain name and my Adminstrator credentials, I get "The following error occured when attempting to join the domain "computerlab.net": The account specified for the service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."The Administrator account for both server and client is identical if that affects it all? I seem to be very close to success except for this error message.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2. Microsoft Update shows I am completely up to
date (0 updates of any kind recommended).I used to have Automatic Updates set to "Automatic" but now it is set to "Download updates for me but let me choose when to install them." All fourradio buttons are unavailable (grayed out).I am logged in with Administrator rights, and have even tried logging in as the domain administrator, to no avail. Startup type under Services/Automatic
Updates is set to Automatic. I have tried Stopping and reStarting the
service, also to no avail.

I set up a domain on my server and set up about 6 computers in the network. One of the computers is getting decomissioned and I need to strip it down. I removed the domain name to it and now I have not been able log back into the computer, even as the administrator and the guest is locked out (not that I can do much with the guest log-in). Is there any way that I can get back into the computer.

Now that I am ready to join the WinXP to the SBS as a "Domain:" computer I find a terrific challenThe first indication of a challenge came when the SBS <http://<sbs2003ServerName>/connectcomputer> ran into errors. Connected the HP all in one scanner ,printer to windows xp machine. When I'm logged on locally as the administrator on this machine the scanner works fine when i try to scan using the hp solution center to scan the documents. But when i log on to the domain and try scanning using the solution center or even adobe photoshop or any other software it just will not scan and it tells me to reinstall the drivers of the scanner. The printer works fine. Just the scanner does not work.

I changed from a domain to a workgroup on a work computer that stays at home, but remotely access the network via the internet. I had to reboot, however it turns out the account I was using is on the remote domain, so I cannot log in. I don't have the administrator password, and would like to somehow set the domain back to what it was earlier so I can log in again. How would I go about doing this?

Whilst trying to set up a wireless connection on my PC, i inadvertently set up a network with my PC. not knowing what i had done. I used the 'Network Connections' wizard in the control panel. in this wizard i did input a passwrod as one of the fields needing filling in. I reset my computer - note i am using a different computer now! - and it asked me for a password to 'Log onto Windows'. i tried using the password i entered in above wizard set-up, but this is not working. have tried all variations but with nothing working. i cannot get into my computer! is there a way i can bypass this screen - i can see none! this is not an 'official' network that has been set up, so there is no administrator to re-set the password.

I am installing a new network with all XP pro Sp2 PCs's. The issue is these PC's were all built prior to me setting up the network and no one installed the administrator accounts on any of them. The server box in Advanced server 2003 and I set up there accounts in active directory. Made the part of the server workgroup. Set up there share folders gave them permissions to the shares and I could not copy there files to the server. I get the message no rights or permissions contact the Administrator. I copied some test files to an
USB memory stick downloaded the to the server for testing purposes. We can see them from the desktop but we can't edit or save them. In the folder that the files were in I made sure that they were'nt read only and it still say's we don't have permissions to these files?

A while back before I knew better I gave a client of mine an active directory domain that ended in .org and did not exist on the internet at the time. Now, I'm discovering in the DNS event log at regular intervals errors about how the computers in the internal domain are unable to register in the DNS server of the web domain of the same name. So, my question is whether there is something I can do to change the Active Directory domain so that I don't get those errors anymore.
They're running Windows 2003 server standard with Active Directory, roaming profiles, routing and remote access for VPN, DHCP server, standard fileserver, and print server. I may have missed one or two things but likely I haven't. The server has itself as the primary DNS server though it's not the 127 address it's the actual IP. The secondary server is the router but I have the DHCP giving out the servers for opendns.com as options 3 and 4 after the Domain Controller and the router but I had the problem before adding the opendns.com entries.

I so screwed up tonight. I was trying to get rid of some nasty dll files that my sisters pc had been infected with..and they just would not go away.I got frustrated and went into the registry and started deleting any reference to these dll files and am now in deep trouble.I restarted windows (xp home version) and attempted to log in. Got an error that the system could not log me in because the domain "sallyslaptop" is not available. I tried booting into safemode, tried (unsuccessfully) to access the setup/bios (not that getting there would have helped me i don't think..) and just cannot get back into any kind of windows environment. she has huge projects due at school and all her data is there!! If i can just get to her documents and save those, then I will be happy. If i have to reload windows an dstuff, fine...just as long as i can retain her documents!

I need to know how to change the name of a Network Adapter, specifically the Hamachi one. When going to Network Connections, under the Hamachi connection it states its Network Adapter name (also shown as this in Device Manager); Hamachi Network InterfaceI need to change Hamachi Network Interface to anything else, other than Hamachi Network Interface, Lets rename it to Local VPN.I have altared all instances of the name Hamachi Network Interface located in the registry (literally searched for it, and replaced all values and names that stated it with Local VPN instead of Hamachi Network Interface), I even changed all instances within the driver itself, reinstalled the driver, and it still would not altar the name to Local VPN.

I currently look after a network of 20 computers, some running windows 7 and most running XP sp3 (32+64bit) Mine is 32bit.
I joined my computer to the domain after a fresh install of XP. Here are where the problems started. After about 15 minutes I lost internet connection. About 20 minutes later the computer could not open or close any programs without killing the process. Then I lost network connection and was left with only the task manager running and no explorer open. I managed to install SP3 after downloading it on a seperate computer and running it on a disk.
