A while back before I knew better I gave a client of mine an active directory domain that ended in .org and did not exist on the internet at the time. Now, I'm discovering in the DNS event log at regular intervals errors about how the computers in the internal domain are unable to register in the DNS server of the web domain of the same name. So, my question is whether there is something I can do to change the Active Directory domain so that I don't get those errors anymore.
They're running Windows 2003 server standard with Active Directory, roaming profiles, routing and remote access for VPN, DHCP server, standard fileserver, and print server. I may have missed one or two things but likely I haven't. The server has itself as the primary DNS server though it's not the 127 address it's the actual IP. The secondary server is the router but I have the DHCP giving out the servers for opendns.com as options 3 and 4 after the Domain Controller and the router but I had the problem before adding the opendns.com entries.

Can a Windows 2003 Domain Controller communicate with a Windows 2000 Domain Controller? The reason I ask this is that I want to upgrade my Domain Contoller to Windows 2003, but want to have the backup Windows 2000 machine running as a backup Domain Controller.

I have a XP Pro PC that won't joing a NT 4.0 domain. It says the "domain could not be contacted". Also, I can map to drive shares on the NT server but ONLY if I use the IP address of the server vs the Server name.I know the PC is getting an IP properly. I can browse the Internet and everything under "ipconfig /all" looks right. Is this a problem on the XP machine or the NT 4.0 server?

I need to further limit the user accounts on a number of XP machines. Something in the lines of GP would be nice but I think that can be done only in domain environment? Anyways my questions is what are my options. I am looking for ways to lock the desktop, user preferences/customization etc.

I so screwed up tonight. I was trying to get rid of some nasty dll files that my sisters pc had been infected with..and they just would not go away.I got frustrated and went into the registry and started deleting any reference to these dll files and am now in deep trouble.I restarted windows (xp home version) and attempted to log in. Got an error that the system could not log me in because the domain "sallyslaptop" is not available. I tried booting into safemode, tried (unsuccessfully) to access the setup/bios (not that getting there would have helped me i don't think..) and just cannot get back into any kind of windows environment. she has huge projects due at school and all her data is there!! If i can just get to her documents and save those, then I will be happy. If i have to reload windows an dstuff, fine...just as long as i can retain her documents!

This problem pops up at my office every time we add new users. When we create a new account and proceed to log the new user in at an existing workstation, some workstations won't log the new user in. We get the error that the user can't login because their profile is not found. We have a handful of machines that will complete the new login, create the new profile directory and thereafter the user can login anywhere. Again it's only some workstations. All of the computers run XP Pro, the server is a Win2k3 running Active Directory. We've unjoined and rejoined to the domain.

A new wireless implementation we've setup at one of our high schools. We have a 140 HP 6515B laptops running XP SP2 connecting to cisco access points using WEP encryption. All the 32 access points are centerally managed by cisco software and use one seemless SSID across all of them. The laptops have the WEP key entered and saved to them and they've all be successfully connected to the WAP. The Microsoft Wireless Zero client is handling all the wireless configuration on the laptops. Is there any special configurations you have to make to enable wireless on a laptop joined to a domain? Some setting that triggers connectivity it at the login screen?

I have an XP machine that I'm trying to setup as a fileserver, but when I go into permissions, the only thing that shows up is the local machine, not the domain or any of it's computers.
-Is the computer connected to the domain: Yes.
-Can the computer ping other computers: Yes.
-Can the computer access other network shares? Yes.

I am trying to set up a shared folder on an XP pro machine and give permissions to only certain domain users. Problem is when I go to permissions, then "Add" then the only location I can see is the local computer - no option to see in the domain for users/computers on the domain. WIN2000 clients bring up the option of the local computer name and the domain no problem.

You may experience extremely long delays (up to 5 minutes) when logging into domains using Windows XP Pro. This is caused by the asyncronous loading of networking during the boot up process. This speeds up the login process in a stand-alone workstation by allowing the user to log in with cached logon credentials before the network is fully ready. To disable this "feature" and restore your domain logons to their normal speed, open the MMC and add the group policy snap-in. Under Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->System-->Logon, change "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" to ENABLED.

I have installed this OS on a new Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX150 S4. Now I want just to use this Server as a server on a Workgroup. But the OS insists that it should be the Domain Controller. And then it just shuts it self down. Below is a log from the event viewer. Just don't really want to configure the entire Lan from workgroup to Domain.

Running a windows 2003 Domain environment. The users on the workstations have all been Local Admins on their workstations for a while, and now I want to revoke that and make them regular users. The goal is no installation of unauthorized software, including unintended installs of malware.Problem - ActiveX on websites is simply not working. I can't figure out which GPOs to set to allow ActiveX to install/run for specific content/sites. Is there a way to use Group Policies to allow ActiveX content to run on Trusted Sites? I see tons of settings in GP, but none seem to work.

This will most likely be a "here we go again" type of thread, but I have not found any newer developments on this.Have a Dell Lattitude D610 laptop, running Xp Pro, SP2. Recently, I inadvertantly changed the net settings to workgroup, to set up a home network. Once this was done, I can not log on to the machine.History: this is a work laptop, however, the HD is mine (had viruses, so the company gave me a new HD). The two HD's were both from a master image Obviously, I could send the HD back to the techies at work, however, this is a 5 year old HD that we are talking about.I tried ophcrack to get the admin password, but none was found. There was a guest account, with no password, but it would not work.

Can anyone tell me how i can allow my Win2K domain users to add local printers to their XP Pro workstations? I've tried eveything I know in local machine accounts and domain GPO security and nothing works. I cant believe that there's not a way to do it, but Im about ready to give up. If the local users can add network printers, why should it be so difficult to add local printers?
