Is it possible to reverse connect a wifi router? Using the wifi router instead, of say, a usb wifi adapter? Has anyone tried this? Would this increase the range of a wifi network?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI always use the computer with user accounts with limited privliges. This is safer, right?I was trying to install the wifi router last week. Now when starting up I get the "admin" user account, not the Welcome Screen, with the user acct. icons. I have not made password for any of the accts., so I get the admin log-in, and simply hit return, and I'm in the admin user acct.. I can see the limited user's folders of documents and favorites, but I can't get into the user accounts.

This is even with the windows and router firewall turned off.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am hoping somebody on here will be able to help me. I just installed a wireless router so the kids could have the Internet on their computer. I went into the setup and set times to limit how late they could be on. When the time comes that they should be shut off the router disconnects them and then reconnects them shortly thereafter. I have it set to shut off at 9:00 p.m. and turned back on at 8:00 a.m.. I am using a Linksys systems router.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the process of trying to troubleshoot a USB device problem on an XP pro SP2 machine, I went into device manager and after confirming the device associated with the problem (device marked with a yellow question) by connecting, disconnecting and reconnecting again, I deleted the device. I did so assuming that when I reconnected the device that windows would reinstall it, it did not. After several reboots, including a safe mode reboot, windows no longer responds to the attachement of the device to the machine. No audio indication, no activity in device manager, no sys tray activity. How do I reverse the deletion of the device?

If these patches and updates were successful, and apparently they were, as I have received no indications otherwise. It's my understanding that these files are used to reverse or uninstall a failed update; Is that correct? How can I verify that all patches and updates were successfully applied? I've had no trouble after installing these, so I'm assuming that all is well. So the question is, How do I remove these $NTUninstallKB******* files?

he came home and the monitor was flashing the little lights on the front that indicate it being over range
we tried an older monitor, as well as my own LCD that Im typeing on now, both had the same results, as well as in VGA mode the monitor acts normal up untill the loading windows screen, where it promptly goes blank and begins with the flashing lights but booting into safe Does work and gives us a picture, so I dont think it could be problem a problem with onboard graphics, so Im guessing its a malicious program that is inflicting this problem, unless someone can tell me otherwize does anybody know what would likely be the cause of this, or the best way to trouble shoot it, we already did a Repair installation,that didnt fix anything and I figured Id ask here on the tech forum before proceding to wipe his hard drive, my question on the forum is also a lilttle bit curiosity driven,

Employees have access to laptops for work use and I want to restrict them from being able to take the laptops home and using them on their home networks and then bringing them back to work to connect to the works network. This will reassure that they are not bringing viruses from home and putting them on our network. Unfortunately since they are considered a "work tool" I can not stop them from taking them away from work, but I would like to restrict them from connecting to any other access point other than ours at work. Any suggestions?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI made a HUGE mistake today. I was configuring 2 'puters at a time & accidently made the only admin account into a limited account. At first, I swear, I remember seeing the at least one other account that was an admin but I guess not. The login screen is a bit wierd as well. Instead of it being the new xp screen with the users' icon it has the old 2000 version with the window asking for the username & password. I tried to enter the UN in that I thought I remember seeing & a variety of possible passwords but nada.
1. is it possible to reverse the limited restrictions on the formerly admin account without any other admin account. This seems unlikely but I guess there has to be a way, right? (GOD!, I hioe there is a way!)
2. If there really is another admin account (it seems unlikely that windows would allow the only account to be changed to limited access) then how can I recoup the forgotten password. I didnt make a passwords disks.
job search and financial files from '99 that were moved via floppy disk, tape, CD, or e-mail from old NT 4.0 to newer NT 4.0 box and then to current W2K box. On latter two boxes these files produced 'access restricted' errors and were inaccessible. I've kept them in hopes of someday being able to reaccess the data. These file types include doc, txt, html, MS Money data, and possibly another one or two. In other words, file type is not the issue. I was on the old boxes and am on the W2K box THE administrator, and taking ownership, changing permissions for folder and file, and still cannot access them. The current drive and previous drive were both NTFS, but I may have had a problem on a FAT drive also.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIn an attempt to use her computer in our apt, she's set it up and tried to boot. Problem is, the computer is going to an error page whenever she boots with the card in place. The specific message is that file ar5200.sys is trying to write to a read-only memory. We then have to shut the system down cold as ctr-alt-del isn't working. So, it's locking up pretty well. With the card not in place, XP is booting fine. We are getting an error code as well, but the computer boots and is working (although running slightly slower). It says system is recovering from a serious error. The error report shows the problem is files in the temp folder? Searching for the specific sys (ar5200.sys) file hasn't given us any help. I just can't seem to find that darn file that's causing the trouble!

When I open the lid again and the computer boots back into windows, the wireless internet doesn't work. Today, my computer shows that my wireless card is working properly but it is not finding any wireless networks in range, which is wrong. Yesterday, while at my apartment, I could see 9 networks, today I see none. When I go to the coffee shop, it does not see that network either. Right now I am sitting at my school and it is not picking up the network in here either. Everyone else around is picking up the network, just not me. I have checked everything and cannot figure out what the problem is. I have a Compaq Presario R3000Z, running on an AMD Athlon XP Processor (3000+), 800 MHz and 2 GB Ram. Running XP Pro w/Srvc. Pack 2.
My internal network card is a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. I even uninstalled this and rebooted and after reload, it still does not want to pick up any of the networks. Any ideas where I can start? Already tried the program that fixes corrupt TCP/IP drivers (WinSock XP) and it did not work. Again, nothing was changed prior to this problem. All the settings are the way they have been for the last 3 years.
A friend is receiving anytime he turns his PC on this error message: "Frequency out of Range". The Pc can lauch the boot process ( asking you to press F10 to access the Boot Menu or F2 for the Bios Settings) then the operating system, but some how the above error message always closes the process up. Then nothing else can be seen on the dark black screen but this error message. I tried to run the Pc on safe mode to access the control panel, but in vain.
View 10 Replies View RelatedSometimes I will highlight a range of photo files and open them into Picture and Fax viewer. I can then page through all the photos I selected. Occasionally though, I will load a range of photos into the viewer and photos from outside the range I selected get loaded into the viewer. When this has happened, I've gone back and reselected the range and tried it again and still get pictures loading from outside the range I wanted. Also, I notice on the viewer's print wizard that pictures/documents from outside my range of selected documents are sometimes presented for printing. Anyone know how that happens and how do you fix it?

Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall.However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.
