I use WinXP Pro SP3.I am Missing the "Shorcut Arrow" on my icons, on the DeskTop, in Windows Explorer, etc. The arrows DO show for internet shortcuts > I use FireFox 3.6.3.I can find A Lot of info on the net about "removing" the arrow... I would like to put it back. I looked into editing the Registry by going backwards form the found info, but there are too many conflicting instructions concerning Location and Values. It's better I leave it alone until I find what's correct. 'Tweak UI 2.10' has the correct Radio Button is selected. The Prefix "Shortcut To" does NOT show [used Tweak UI long time ago to remove it].
I had recently installed BootVis like 20 min ago and suddenly after I restarted the computer, I couldn't move any icons on the desktop or any folders! I tried check in the auto arrange option and it was off. This is very strange as it has never happened to me before. When I drag the icon to somewhere on my desktop, it disappears from the arrow as if I hadn't touched it. It's like my icons are locked into place and it's driving me insane trying to find a solution!I run Windows XP Professional SP2.
Some of desktop icons can be removed without actually removing the program they represent, but others, when I right click to remove, will remove the entire program along with the icon. Is there some way I can remove just the icon without removing the program?
On an initial boot up, I loose the show hidden icon arrow and all the icons in the system tray, the only way to get them back is to log off then log back on again,
Unil this morning i could click on a little "up" arrow on the right side (not extreme right) of my taskbar to display a pop up list of my desktop icons. I could then click on the 1 i wanted. it was very convenient because i didn't have to close all my windows to see the icons. The arrow suddenly disappeared & everything became different & i don't know why.
Some 20 shortcut icons on my screen and the last time I booted up they had all disappeared. Going through IE/Desktop they are all there. I have tried dragging them from the desktop window to the desktop screen but that is not possible as the destination is the same. I have tried right clicking the desktop screen and creating a new shortcut the new shortcut is created but only in the desktop window and not on the screen. It slows things down when there is no icon to bring up the Internet and other favourite programmes and there is no Recycle Bin.
There are unwanted shortcut icons on my task bar (not the system tray). They are on top of each other and when I right-click on the one on top and select "delete" it gets deleted along with the corresponding shortcut on the desktop. I went through many answers on several forums, but they did not describe the same problem. Also, the problem appeared lately (do not remember exactly when). Other than the windows updates and service packs (SP3) and AVG8 updates, nothing got installed. I would like to get rid of these unnecessary shortcuts because they take away space for the icons of open applications.
To give you the (sort of) quick version: usually, I'm fairly careful about where I go and what I do online to avoid malware. However, I picked *something* up a few days back that spewed it all over my hard drive. Ran SAS, cleared a ton of stuff, and restarted, only to find my PC in a boot loop. Tried repairing windows incase SAS deleted an important .dll or something, but ended up having to completely reformat. Installed AVG immediately upon reformat, and everything's been fine the past few days.
However, last night something happened, and I don't know what triggered it. All of my icons (desktop, folders, start menu), were replaced by the generic windows icon. I'm able to click on most of the shortcuts and reassign the original icon, but for certain items like the recycling bin, I'm unable to do so (and attempting to restore the default under desktop options does nothing, either). While it's not that big an issue at the moment, I'm afraid there's something more going on here. although an additional AVG scan showed nothing but some tracking cookies.
Double clicking on the shortcut icons on the desktop wont work. Though folders, mp3 files and likealikes work. Even .exe works.Only Shortcuts not working. Though on right clicking and opening, they work. One more thing is, when i go to start>>programs and click on ANY program for it to start, that also doesnt work. The start menu simply vanishes or say minimizes. Though, when i right click and open them, they work. Both these problems are since pretty long time.
I want to create a shortcut to a workgroup from my vista rt (http://lee-soft.com/vistart/) start menu. This requires me to know its path in the same way that My Computer's path is ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8- 08002B30309D}. Perhaps that is not completely true but nevertheless I need to find a path that will link me to the workgroup.I have tried right-clicking and selecting create shortcut. This puts a shortcut on my desktop but the path of it is greyed-out and simply saying the workgroup's name.
when I click on a Shortcut on the desktop, instead of starting the program, it goes to the 'SEARCH' area...I then have to go back to the Desktop and right click on the Shortcut and click on 'OPEN' in order for the program to start.
I've been trying to figure out how some software winds up on this list and other packages don't. i can't find any rhyme or reason to it. i know that you can add items, by going to the file types tab on the folder options, but how packages that you don't add wind up there is a mystery that i'm hoping some one can shed some light on.
When I create a desktop shortcut to a website that has a favicon, the favicon is displayed in the desktop shortcut. This works for all sites, except for CNet. Would appreciate it if someone else running IE7 would confirm this behavior, or let me know why I may be having this problem. For CNet, I don't get a favicon, I don't even get a generic explorer icon.....I get a "blank" icon, no icon at all.
The system is a Compaq Pressario with Windows XP. I Downloaded a Program from CNet the other day and with it I got a CNet Shortcut on my Desktop.I can not figure out how to get rid of this 'Thing'.
I tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.
I can of course make a shortcut to IE on the desktop. But how do you put the IE icon, not the shortcut on there. I see you can right click eg My Computer and place that on desktop - but how to do so for IE?
Want to create a desktop shortcut for Windows live messenger but I don't have it in all programs so I can't create shortcut from there.I don't want it to load on startup & I don't want to have to open a browser to open messenger, hence the desire for a shortcut.
i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).
After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
Still using XP Pro but with with new motherboard, hard drives,RAM,I'm happy with it all except for some reason, I'm having a problem with shortcuts opening up a web site when activated by clicking on the Desktop icon. Here is an explanation of what is happening:If I have a "link" on an e-mail and click on it, the web site opens just fine. I have highlighted and moved that link onto the desktop so it will be a shortcut there. However, when I click on that, I get two things:A flag comes up saying "Windows cannot find (and then it says the link address)".The web site is opened underneath the flag and no problem with it.
When try to open any program via the normal shortcuts, I see an error message reading Application Not Found. In order to use anything, I must go find the program on my hard drive and then choose the program responsible for running that program. I've tried creating new shortcuts, but to no avail. How can I get back to normal? I'm running Windows XP.
I just upgraded from 2k to XP. On 2K i could have all my desktop icons and icons for programs i use down on the task bar above open applications. Im sure theres a way to do this on XP so i dont have to go to my desktop or the start menu every time to open a new program.
I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky. now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu, etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.
There are no icons or taskbar on my desktop, On any account that I log in on. Cannot access task manager or start menu. How do I recover my desktop? This is a dell desktop pc, windows xp
