Unable To Access Websites By Making As Desktop Shortcut?
Nov 21, 2008
Still using XP Pro but with with new motherboard, hard drives,RAM,I'm happy with it all except for some reason, I'm having a problem with shortcuts opening up a web site when activated by clicking on the Desktop icon. Here is an explanation of what is happening:If I have a "link" on an e-mail and click on it, the web site opens just fine. I have highlighted and moved that link onto the desktop so it will be a shortcut there. However, when I click on that, I get two things:A flag comes up saying "Windows cannot find (and then it says the link address)".The web site is opened underneath the flag and no problem with it.
I have cleared cookies, cache, check settings reset modem, remove router nothin is helping. On a ping I get timed out.On a trace route it doesnt complete. Any help to resolve this issue is appreciated for i have many sites i can access but some I cant.Sites I cant access are as follows www.no2allmails.com www.a-n-a-cash.com and some others all give the same errors
I just recently reformatted my computer. Now for some reason certain sites are inaccessible to my computer... big sites like yahoo, facebook, and other random sites. But at the same time i can access many websites such as this. When trying to connect to these other websites i get a message such as "The connection was reset" I am plugged into the wall with an Ethernet so there is no router involved. The only firewall i have running is windows firewall.
It seems that Windows has gone AWOL again. I can not access certain websites.mostly ones that require secured access like financial websites: paypal etc. I can usually get the first page, but when I click sebsequent links, the browser says it can not find it. This applies to both IE and Firefox so the problem must be in the user profile of windows I presume.
My Norton's internet security no longer starts itself upon startup either even though I click the box for it to begin upon startup. In msconfig, Norton's is set for startup as well...
I don't want to system restore as I've had problems with deleting duplicate files and such
I brought her computer home to use for my school work. Someone signed into the Administrative / Owner name and somehow locked it. We don't have one of those password reset disk that the Windows website says. I have a disk that says "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition System Recovery CD/DVD" I was told if I reinstalled Windows on the computer that it would erase the entire harddrive. There are alot of pictures on the computer, not to mention Microsoft Office, that I don't want to lose. My mom passed away suddenly and while I know her other passwords, this one is different which leads me to believe one of my younger cousins was messing with her computer and did something they didn't mean.Is there anyway possible to reset the password and use the computer without losing all the pictures on it?
i recently had a couple of trojans on my computer. they started to make my computer crash alot and they changed my background to a huge warning sign..it had said warning your computer is infested with many trojans malware and adware. i ran alot of scans and now i am very sure that its all cleaned up. But when i try to access my taskmanager i cannot. i have read another thread wich told me to type in taskmngr.exe or something like that the run thing but it just said task manager has been disabled by admin. how to reenable it and i am the admin. also when i try to change my background via right click>properties>desktop where i should be able to scroll through the backgrounds is all locked up and disabled.
I am unable to go into my windows xp desktop. The computer boots and stops with the following menus. 1. Safe mode 2. Safe mode with networking 3. Safe mode with command prompt 4. Last known good configuration 5. Start windows normaally. I selected each prompt but none of them let me in to my desktop. Instead after each booting it keeps on bringing me to the very same menus mentioned above. I need an immediate help that will help me solve this problem in order to be able to access my Desktop.
i got windows xp home and im unable to enter my desktop or login, when i start up i get to the windows xp home logo and the process bar, but after that everything turns black and stays that way forever.i can't enter safe mode, the computer simply dont let me, i tap the safe mode options key, f12 for me, not f8, but the screen never shows up, it's like it doesnt register the key is there, i can tap f8 to get the booting options and f1 for bios options, but not the safe mode.
this happened after i found a virus in winlogon.exe, the AV deleted it and that is when things got messed up, although i have done this before actually, but then i just repair installed windows and everything went back to normal, but when i try this now, it doesnt work, it installs windows all over again, the blue screen and the yellow progress bar, but when it's suppose to reboot and then continue the installation
I have been having trouble trying to access some websites such as ebay.com, myspace.com, yahoo.com etc. When I try and access them I am redirected to a Barcelona Hotels and city guide website.I am using Internet Explorer but I also have mozilla firefox which is giving me the same problem. Perhaps a Firewall problem? I am using Norton Internet security.
On some of my pc`s I can not access Windowsupdate.com or any Microsoft websites. I thought it was a virus or spyware issue so I did a clean install of windows xp pro.
Once installed I setup up all my settings installed drivers, got onto the internet and i can go to any websites without a problem. But even with a clean install i cannot access any Microsoft websites.
So then i thought maybe it was a problem with my firewall blocking theses websites. I called my internet provider (Time Warner) who manage my firewall, and they claim the firewall is not blocking any of these websites. Which makes sense because i have serveral pc on the same network that can access these websites.
many websites I try to access, i.e., Amazon.com; CDNow. com; and many others, result in getting this Page Cannot Be Displayed. I have Windows XP and I.E. 6.0. Does anyone know why this is happening?
I've a good internet connection via a dlink n. No problems with firefox V3.6.3 or IE v6 browsing save for Microsoft sites, which are installed on an older Toshiba laptop running xp and service pack 2.
Not that I needed any data from Windows or Microsoft, but I find it interesting that I cannot get any of their websites to come up.
I've just ressurected this laptop which I only used with an offline program that was work related. I thought I'd update via the windows update and found the IE/Firefox message Quote: Server not found Quote: Firefox can't find the server at www.microsoft.com. Same on IE.
I am using xp and have a laptop with xp. I use a linksys router for the laptop. I recently switched from DSL to Cable, since the switch there are a few web sites I cannot get to open up. Aafes.com, hotmail.com, support.microsoft.com.....and a few others. Most sites open fine but....I have checked my router, it's fine. I have bypassed it and gone straight from the modem still doesn't work. I have hooked someone elses laptop up to modem and guess what??? They opened them just fine. So I'm back to me. I'm so frustrated and confused. Please any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
I have Win XP Home with SP#3.My wife and i each use individual accts, user ids etc.For no reason I can understand suddenly when i click on one of my desktop shortcuts to open a website...e.g. Facebook, Yahoo etc..instead of automatically opening the specific site I get the box which asks which program i want to use to open the site.It is usally always Int.Ex. and at the bottom of the box there is a checkbox to indicate that when you open that same site in the future it should always be opened using IE, but when i go to open the site again i have to again each time indicate i want to use IE to open it. I also went to my wife's side of the pc and tried hers and her website shortcuts open properly like mine used to
I am a pc technican, I have noticed that over the years whenever i have a particular brand of pcs sometimes some pcs boot up much faster than others, sometimes even when the spec is better on some systems, i have a dell pc here i have been asked to replace a psu on, i am just wondering why exactly it boots up really fast, in comparison to some new builds i build sometimes, with the latest components faster ram etc, maybe it`s the hard drives some of these are using?
I have begun experiencing problem with IE6 not displaying pages for any url or IP address entered in the address bar. This occurs when there is an Internet connection (dial up). The browser will display web pages from files on the computer. (Windows XP sr2)I have concluded that this is an IE related problem, since Netscape 7.2 works properly. When I open IE6 with an Internet connection, the title bar indicates that my default homepage is (will be) displayed. There is no url shown in the address bar and no information displayed in the status bar. The mouse hourglass icon is displayed for as long as the browser is left open.
I want to create a shortcut to a workgroup from my vista rt (http://lee-soft.com/vistart/) start menu. This requires me to know its path in the same way that My Computer's path is ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8- 08002B30309D}. Perhaps that is not completely true but nevertheless I need to find a path that will link me to the workgroup.I have tried right-clicking and selecting create shortcut. This puts a shortcut on my desktop but the path of it is greyed-out and simply saying the workgroup's name.
Iam anable to open any MS websites either with IE7 or FireFox. Able to open other websites. I have tried adding "s"to the "http"protocol, but no luck. Then went to internet options and unticked the "tsl"option in Advanced tab, again no luck! Thus iam not able to manually download updates. The XP pro has SP2 and SP3 installed. All the drivers are in place. To add to my woes ,SAS PRO and MBAM are not getting updates too!To survive i have installed AVG 8 Anti-virus and it too is not getting updated! I have turned off the windows firewall and the Comodo Firewall Pro. The KIS 2009 disk is not installing as it is not being accessed by the dvd drive( please see my post in "General security"). When i run the diagnostic tool--i get the message that the PC is unable to access the FTP and the http and https are fine! Please ask for any further info' which i've failed to mention
I have just noticed a problem with saving web sites. When I click on the favourites icon along the top bar and then add > new folder I am unable to see the selected folder. When I click on the word favourite - also along the top, which also produces a list, the folder is there! How do I get folders I create to show up along the left hand side of the screen (ie when the favourite icon is clicked.
Get "INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE" when I try to sign on to Explorer.RAN DIAGNOSTICS: Got this Message: "WINDOWS CANNOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET USING HTTP, HTTPS OR FTP. THIS IS PROBABLY CAUSED BY FIREWALL SETTINGS CHECK THE FIREWALL SETTINGS FOR THE HTTP PORT (80), HTTPS PORT (443), AND FTP PORT (21)"
I have checked into everything I can think of so that I can view images in my e-mail and on e-card websites.I have also downloaded netscape but it is the same there.I have a Dell Dimension 4600 Series desktop computer.I use Windows XP, Norton SystemWorks Premier 2005. I have Spyware Blaster, Pop Up blocker and a firewall.I have gone to each of these and checked anything that would prevent being able to view images.I get a blank bacground with a tiny square with a red x in it. I did a system restore due to a Trojan virus about 2 weeks ago, and nothing now shows up in my scans
when I click on a Shortcut on the desktop, instead of starting the program, it goes to the 'SEARCH' area...I then have to go back to the Desktop and right click on the Shortcut and click on 'OPEN' in order for the program to start.
I've been trying to figure out how some software winds up on this list and other packages don't. i can't find any rhyme or reason to it. i know that you can add items, by going to the file types tab on the folder options, but how packages that you don't add wind up there is a mystery that i'm hoping some one can shed some light on.
When I create a desktop shortcut to a website that has a favicon, the favicon is displayed in the desktop shortcut. This works for all sites, except for CNet. Would appreciate it if someone else running IE7 would confirm this behavior, or let me know why I may be having this problem. For CNet, I don't get a favicon, I don't even get a generic explorer icon.....I get a "blank" icon, no icon at all.
The system is a Compaq Pressario with Windows XP. I Downloaded a Program from CNet the other day and with it I got a CNet Shortcut on my Desktop.I can not figure out how to get rid of this 'Thing'.
i'm having trouble loading things online.web pages, games, videos, etc.Internet.com is the worst.most of the time i cannot even get into the site, and on the rare occasion that i do, most videos won't load.they just stay on a black loading screen for a long time, and never do anything else. web pages don't load most of the time either.i have four different browsers, i have run every scan, updated everything, including the flash player, i have disabled my firewall, pop-up blocker, and virus protection.restored computer to an earlier state, used recovery discs, cleared cookies, history, cache, temporary internet files.
