Can anyone remind me of the Registry setting that tells the TaskBar to reserve screen space? At the moment maximising any application covers the taskbar. I need to reserve the space back for it.

Their techs first answer was that the artwork database was damaged.After following their techs instructions on how to clear the artwork. I still had the error message. They told me since I am still getting the error message, my only option is to reinstall. After reinstalling AOL I still have the error message when I close AOL.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to turn on my Windows XP SP2 machine and be on the desktop without having to be there to pick a login name. I installed a new printer on this machine and now it stops and waits for me to pick a login name. It was also going to the login screen whenever the screensaver was accessed. I was able to remove that feature by right-clicking on the desktop > properties > screensaver and unchecking "on resume, display Welcome screen".I remember when this happened on my old Win 98 computer I went into the control panel > network and changed the setting from "Client for Microsoft Networks" to "Windows Logon". Is there a way to do this in Windows XP SP2?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running XP Pro, single user on my machine. My screen saver setting is to require a password upon resuming. Until a few days ago this was working fine, showing the Welcome screen. Then suddenly I am now (only upon screenaver resumption) getting the classic logon screen. The option setting in the screensaver settings window has changed and I am utterly unable to determine what changed it or how to return it to the original state.
My account settings are for Fast User Switching and to Show Welcome Screen. I am not part of a domain. In perusing some newsgroups I have found this question before, however nowhere an answer to the question how to fix it. I concluded that something I must have done (without me being aware of it) had changed this and consequently decided to use an XP test build on another machine to possibly pinpoint such an occurence through a phased approach. Much to my surprise I found the setting for a screensaver to 'upon resome, password protect' from the get-go, i.e. the very first time I logged on, so my attempt for analyis was proven unsuccessful in record time.....
Wanted to skip the Login screen on my Windows XP computer and login to my account automatically, so my computer would boot faster. I used this ( http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/welskip.php ) guide. So, i went to Start > Run > I entered in "control userpasswords2" and hit "OK" > I unchecked the box which states "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" and applied the setting > The computer then requested the username and password of the account I wished to automatically login. This is where I think I messed up. By default, the username box is filled in with "Administrator" and since I am the administrator I did not change the username to "Ben" (which is what my accounts name is) and I left the username box filled with "Administrator". Also, I left the password blank (this is because I have no password). Now when I try to start up my computer I am stuck on the blue screen stating "Starting Up" and I never get to my desktop. How do I fix this (meaning, how do I change this setting back)? Can I boot my computer into safe mode and then change the setting back, or is there an easier way to fix this?

While playing around with it the entire Start, taskbar, notification, and clock ended up on right side of the screen. While trying to fix it, it disappeared. I rebooted and it came back on the right side. How do I get it back on the bottom? Once back on bottom (hopefully), how do I get the date to show (it's hidden under systray. I can see a small sliver peeking up)?

I don't know if I have a virus or not Also, when I type, the cursor randomly lets the last letter/number to go ahead of the cursor so that the next letter is behind the one I just typed.
I took the IE 7.0 upgrade. Now I have a very loused-up IE screen. Is there somewhere that I can reset the IE 7.0 settings? I'm using WINXP and am new to it also. The main problem I'm having has to do with the taskbar and a line above the taskbar. That area just above the taskbar seems to be covering up anything that ought to be showing. There's doesn't seem to be an option for that line like the ability to hide the taskbar. Also, the top of the IE screen is all messed up. Is there any way to get rid of the upgrade if I can't reconfigure it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to get anything to work. I wanted to check Mcafee to make sure I didn't let it expire and allow a virus issue. Wouldn't open. Rebooted several times with no change. The lower Taskbar is off the screen and I can't seem to get it back, so no start button to access programs not on the desktop. I can open " my computer " but it won't tell me If I have an internet connection. I think I must have connectivity.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just finished a complete reinstall of Windows XP. Before the re-installation, I partitioned the hard drive. I want the basic Windows XP system files and drivers on my "C" drive and then I want to accumulate data files (word processing, spreadsheets, photos, music files, etc.) on the new partition which in this case has been labeled the "G" drive. The difficulty I am having is getting getting the "Documents and Settings" to move over to the "G" drive. So that when I want to load photographs from my camera to the computer it goes for C:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Instead I would like it to go to G:Documents and SettingsMy NameMy DocumentsMy Pictures. Using Windows Explorer I changed the file name of "My Documents" to 'Windows XP old path My Documents" and then I was going to set up a new path to the "G" drive through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Managment>Disk Management.
However I noticed that when I clicked on Start in the bottom left hand corner and it puts up that little window that "My Documents" which was listed now had the new title 'Windows XP old path My Documents' which I believe means I haven't gotten to the proper place to change the main configuration for Documents and Settings. Long way of saying how do I change the basic configuration for where Document and Settings are stored to a new location.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy computer is a Pentium 4 with 512 MB of RAM with Windows XP Professional Installed. I'm really wondering why this computer starts up so slowly. From the moment I press the power button to the moment the welcome screen appears, it takes 2 minutes. It then takes another 2 minutes for the welcome screen to disappear and show the desktop and load all the startup items in the taskbar. That's a total of 4 minutes and I had older Celeron computers which started up way faster than this. I already removed all unnecessary items in startup yet it hasn't changed much. I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this.

I've noticed that once defraged since a few weeks ago I HAVE GONE from over 70% free space down to only under 40%....I don't run any major software at the moment BUTDO use the internet on ADSL most days BUT not to any great extent. The only connection I can c is this copying Dig pix straight to disc...Am I right or is there sumthing else going on
View 4 Replies View RelatedI consider myself at least a bit competent when it comes to XP and computers... but this problem has me puzzled. I've done tons of searches on google, various forums, microsoft database, etc... and have found some similar problems except that I can't get my taskmanager to become visible. It's there, I know it because I get the resize pointers around the taskmanager's box.
Also, when I start-up WinXP. It gets to the login screen but I can't see my login picture or buttons. I can click on them and enter my password, but when it logs in (the windows start sound plays) the whole screen is black except for the mouse cursor (I don't have a wallpaper, just a black background, so I can't really tell you if my "wallpaper" is still there).
With XP Pro SP2, I enable "Group similar taskbar buttons". I generally have my taskbar stretched 2 to 3 rows even so. Sometimes, when I have a lot of windows open, and the similar taskbar buttons group and stack themselves, so 1 button contains 2 or 3 open tasks, I can't get any action out of the buttons that represent multiple open tasks.
Any of the taskbar buttons that represent a single open task are fine. But any buttons that represent multiple open tasks don't respond. I have to do Alt -
Tab to bring a task to the front, if it's one of the tasks on a button that represents a group. Or I can go to Taskbar Properties, and deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons".
I've just switched from 98 to XP. I find now that the window designations in the taskbar for my *browser windows only* are severely and unaccountably truncated. My browser is IE6. Even if there's only one window open, if it's a browser window, only one letter will display. Other windows will properly display the full name. I've turned taskbar grouping on and off with no change. I've also run the SFC utility, with no change. There is no such problem in my Win98 machine, and my security settings (and all other settings) are the same. I don't wish to upgrade to IE7.

XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped.
View 1 Replies View Relatedit all started with me tryin to free up space. i was down to abt 5gb on my windows drive so i copied a video file which was 1.5gb across to my 250gb drive no worries. i then deleted the the original file. after it was sent to the recyle bin, i opened up the recycle bin and deleted it. only to be hit with a file in use error? has happened before so i ignored it and went to delete it again only before i could hit delete i was hit with a bsod.didnt pay that much attention i only noticed that it said the win32k.sys file was the culprit.i rebooted the machine and bang, a bsod before the welcome screen.this time i pay attention, only to see that it doesnt mention the offending file just that its a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA problem.
View 8 Replies View Related1.I have a dell digital jukebox mp3 player that allows for storage of data or music. I tried to copy a 600mb file from the mp3 player onto my hard drive. I had a little over 600 mb of space left on my hard drive (a total storage capacity of 6GB). It said i had run out of space. So i deleted some files, move some things around and i had 1.1 GB of space free for this transfer. i tried again and this time again the message i got was not enough space on drive c:/. So i cancelled out and checked to see what i had on my hard drive, 500mb free!!!?? So i have lost hard drive space and not gain a file...So i investigated and found that i have 1.81 GB of data on c: documents settingsuser. but once i get into user, i have 6 folders none of which display nearly that much data. They are, favorites, start menu, cookies, desktop, my documents, and a file named ntuser. the ntuser file is 1mb, and my desktop has 700 or so mb on it. So my question is how can i get back this lost hd space,
2.Blue screen. Im on xp pro sp1, i use adaware, registry mechanic, and im generally tidy with my windows; note, reinstalling windows did not solve this. I never used to have this issue, but lately when i go to open or close certain programs i jump to blue screen. it references trixdp.dll i think it was, and then "begin physical dump of memory" i must reboot at this point. I use VLC media player, and exiting this program mandates a blue screen. Just now i exited mozilla browser and this was the first time i got blue screen from this program.
i got on it, and it started loading the splash screen with windows xp on but then this blue screen error came on.

whenn i start my computer i come to the windows loading screen, and stays there. i have tryed start in safe mode, but explore won't open, and when i open via task manager it just open and closes again in seconds. i have also tryed chkdsk in console, no luck.. i have tryed start virus scanner in task manager, but when it comes to a certain registry file it stops, so i have an idea that the registry is corupted... i have no win XP cd available for about 3 weeks,

I ran chkdsk in recovery console and the computer is working, but I get the following messages on start up: SymSPort.exe had to stop, and notification.dll failed to load properly. View 2 Replies View RelatedI did not add any new memory to my systeme. however, I did remove my current memory to access the inside of my laptop. The fan wire had come loose so I reconnected. I fixed that problem only to find out the problem with the registry. I have chose the load last known configuration that worked correctly but it still gives me the little blue pop up screen with the error, then the restart.
I tried to use my windows xp os disk to try and repair it but it wont read the disc before the blue screen comes back up. I'm thinking of buying a Laptop To IDE Hard Drive Adapter. So, I could at least format my hard drive. I'm not sure if this would be a good idea. I went to the microsoft webpage that deals with this issue but I can not seem to find one to fix my problem.
