I can hear my hdd periodically run. Ctrl-alt-delete does bring up taskman. if i look at performance cpu useage goes in sine wave form from 3-4% to about 35% up and down. every so often it peaks up to mid 80% then goes back to cyclying. at this point taskman locks up if I try to close it out.reboots don't help. I have not installed anything new in a while
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a huge problem that was caused by me trying to delete what I thought were viruses. I went into my "processes running" in the windows task manager and deleted (End Process) what I thought were viruses. I was wrong. I deleted all of my desktop icons and the toolbar/taskbar on the bottom that includes my "start" icon. I can not figure out how to get it back to where it was before I screwed it up. I have tried system restore.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHad diffs yesterday with computer running at snail speed > did ad-aware/norton scans to clean up > now when I minimize any open window, the tab/s just disappear/s to the left of the lower taskbar so they can't be opened easily again. Must be an easy fix for this but after hours of research in MS Help + Google + your existing threads, haven't been able to source a solution. It happened once before but I can't recall how I got it going properly again - that's what age does to the memory!! Now when I have a PC prob & manage to solve it, I note the solution for the future!Would greatly appreciate any suggestions to solve this irritating prob.

Rebooted several times with no change. The lower Taskbar is off the screen and I can't seem to get it back, so no start button to access programs not on the desktop. I can open " my computer " but it won't tell me If I have an internet connection. I think I must have connectivity.

View 5 Replies View RelatedRun XP at a low resolution, so I don't have lots of space for programs.Unfortunately, many programs, and windows run off the bottom of my screen and I can't see any of the options past that point. I can't move them because Windows won't let me move the programs past the top of the screen. There is the MOVE option from the menu in the top-left on some programs, but I am looking more for the ability to grab the windows anywhere, while maybe using a keyboard command, and dragging the window where I need it, past the edge of the screen.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know this is a worn topic, but I searched for similar questions and didn't find the same problem that I am having.Upon reboot, immediatley after the BIOS load screen, I get a white progress bar across the bottom of a black screen. It will move a notch then hesitate for a minute then slowly progress. Once it gets up to about two or three notches it will zip to the end and XP starts to load. If I reboot in Safe Mode the same hesitiation occurs as it loads the list of drivers.Once I start to see the desktop, it will take another 7 minutes or so before I can gain control of the computer and the hard drive runs continuously during that time.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis may be somewhat esoteric but... Under my start button there is a sliver of the taskbar - either blue, silver, or olive green depending on the theme chosen. It wasn't always like this. The start button used to go all the way to the bottom of the screen without any 'line' below it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to make the start button fill the bottom left corner of the screen again?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer shutdown and on boot up it hangs at the black screen showing the white bar at the bottom. I have Windows 98 and 2000 on my computer and neither will boot up from C:, CDROM, or StartUp/BootUp disks. When I try to boot up from the Windows 2000 boot up disk it sometimes will not get passed the blue screen showing 'Windows 2000 setup. Once or twice it has shown some functions in the bar at the bottom of the page. I have tried to boot up using Windows 98 start up disk but most times it hangs at C:. Last night it did open Windows 98 but would not let me reinstall 2000 or do a repair. It now is hanging in both OS. I am told it could be my memory...but how do I check? Upon start up my memory check shows all is okay. I have ran the utility disk for my hard drive and it says all is okay. Before I invest in new memory is there anything else I should check or try? My computer is older and the memory is quite expensive.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just purchased a brand new system, and its driving me nuts. The last system i put together was an old p3-1000 along time ago. ive bought a customized system and had it delivered recently, installed windows and instantly started hitting blue screens, ive spent 3 nights removing drivers and reinstalling, downclocking, everything and im still getting random bsod during even the most mundane activities. my cpu is running around 50c and my gpu's are both 50c idle and 60c underload, so i dont think heat is an issue. ive attached some mini-dumps, could somebody take a look and try to help me out? back in the day i would be all over this issue, but have been out of touch and i'm way behind the ball lately, i realize that getting 3-4 different excuses from windows to dump cant be a good sign. any help would be appreciated. BTW the last system i put together is 6-7 years old, still runs and not a single blue screen.
View 1 Replies View Relatedon my computer I have had a "safely remove hardware" icon in the task tray that I cannot remove or get to operate successfully.
the problem is that whenever I've attempted to "stop" the hardware I always get a message saying, "The ****device cannot be stopped now. Try stopping the device again later. The device is described as "generic volume", with what appears to be some form of identification number.
please tell me whats this how I can remove it and the icon from the taskbar
P.S. - I've newly learned that this "device" with it's icon in the system tray is the hard drive (by comparing the associated ID # indicated in the "properties" window with the hard drive # in the device manager window). I certainly don't want to remove the hard drive, but does anyone know why an icon for this device would appear in the taskbar, or know how to remove the icon only?
I want to remove the network icon (2 pc's) from my taskbar. I have unchecked the box in the propertis that says "notify me when this has no connection,,," but it's still there. Any suggestions?

I took the IE 7.0 upgrade. Now I have a very loused-up IE screen. Is there somewhere that I can reset the IE 7.0 settings? I'm using WINXP and am new to it also. The main problem I'm having has to do with the taskbar and a line above the taskbar. That area just above the taskbar seems to be covering up anything that ought to be showing. There's doesn't seem to be an option for that line like the ability to hide the taskbar. Also, the top of the IE screen is all messed up. Is there any way to get rid of the upgrade if I can't reconfigure it?
