View 4 RepliesI had a few icons at the bottom left of screen (next to the start button)for my email and a couple of other programmes. For some reason they have disappeared, how do i get them back, I tried dragging and dropping but they just pop back to the desktop.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I right-click, and get the Display Properties, I only have three tabs: Themes, Appearances and Settings. I no longer have Screen Saver and DeskTop tabs
I'm not sure when they disappeared, but most likely when I had a virus. I've gotten rid of the virus, but the Screen Saver is gone.
I'm running Windows XP, of course. How can I get my tabs back?
I have a huge problem that was caused by me trying to delete what I thought were viruses. I went into my "processes running" in the windows task manager and deleted (End Process) what I thought were viruses. I was wrong. I deleted all of my desktop icons and the toolbar/taskbar on the bottom that includes my "start" icon. I can not figure out how to get it back to where it was before I screwed it up. I have tried system restore.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy task bar is at the top of my screen. Can someone tell me how to put it back on the bottom? I've tried dragging it but it only moves halfway down and fills half the screen. I've tried dragging it from every edge and side.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRun XP at a low resolution, so I don't have lots of space for programs.Unfortunately, many programs, and windows run off the bottom of my screen and I can't see any of the options past that point. I can't move them because Windows won't let me move the programs past the top of the screen. There is the MOVE option from the menu in the top-left on some programs, but I am looking more for the ability to grab the windows anywhere, while maybe using a keyboard command, and dragging the window where I need it, past the edge of the screen.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI know this is a worn topic, but I searched for similar questions and didn't find the same problem that I am having.Upon reboot, immediatley after the BIOS load screen, I get a white progress bar across the bottom of a black screen. It will move a notch then hesitate for a minute then slowly progress. Once it gets up to about two or three notches it will zip to the end and XP starts to load. If I reboot in Safe Mode the same hesitiation occurs as it loads the list of drivers.Once I start to see the desktop, it will take another 7 minutes or so before I can gain control of the computer and the hard drive runs continuously during that time.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis may be somewhat esoteric but... Under my start button there is a sliver of the taskbar - either blue, silver, or olive green depending on the theme chosen. It wasn't always like this. The start button used to go all the way to the bottom of the screen without any 'line' below it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to make the start button fill the bottom left corner of the screen again?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer shutdown and on boot up it hangs at the black screen showing the white bar at the bottom. I have Windows 98 and 2000 on my computer and neither will boot up from C:, CDROM, or StartUp/BootUp disks. When I try to boot up from the Windows 2000 boot up disk it sometimes will not get passed the blue screen showing 'Windows 2000 setup. Once or twice it has shown some functions in the bar at the bottom of the page. I have tried to boot up using Windows 98 start up disk but most times it hangs at C:. Last night it did open Windows 98 but would not let me reinstall 2000 or do a repair. It now is hanging in both OS. I am told it could be my memory...but how do I check? Upon start up my memory check shows all is okay. I have ran the utility disk for my hard drive and it says all is okay. Before I invest in new memory is there anything else I should check or try? My computer is older and the memory is quite expensive.

When I try to change the theme from modified theme to windows classic the change is not accepted. My screensaver was the picture slideshow and is now windows xp moves across the screen as the screensaver. When I try to change it back the change is not accepted.
This all started because I am trying to back up my computer to an external hard drive and keep getting error message "windows delay write failed". I tried updating the hard disk driver but there wasn't any update. While searching for fixes for that problem, I came across Panda Software online virus checker. I used it and it deleted a few viruses. They were all old, some may have only been unopened email attachments and they were all from 2001 and 2002. Two days later, I was using logmein - remote access and while rebooting (not the first reboot) I got the blue screen. Here's the error message.
Driver_IRQL_not _less_or_equal
stop:0x000000D1 (0x502F1F70, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0XF398B203)
VSDATANT.SYS - address F398B203 base at F3966000, Datestamp 4313a6c6
So I looked up vsdatant.sys which is located in system32 directory, and I changed the name of the driver to vsdatant.old but then my zonealarm stopped working so I changed it back.
How do I get my display working properly? Any ideas on the "write failed" error message?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed a codec that was a virus disguised in windows media player. As soon as i installed it i got the BSOD. i got BSOD from normal boot, safe mode, trying to use the windows cd(to do a recovery but crashes before first screen of options). If i use a linux based boot disk 2/3 kernal paniced. The one that didnt panic, Avira anti-virus, scans finds the virus but cannot remove it. It is definitely not a hardware problem and i have tried all of the boot cds with ALL of my hdds unplugged and it does the same.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my laptop from XP Home to XP Pro. But, I absent-mindedly started to install by booting from the CD like I was doing a fresh install/reformat rather than doing it from inside the OS to do an upgrade. I caught myself, however and restarted without the CD and upgraded Windows from inside Windows. It worked, but now when I boot my computer, it gives me two options to choose from: "Windows XP Home Edition" or "Windows XP Professional Setup." When I pick the Home option, the computer boots up fine and goes to Windows.
However, when I go to Start>Control Panel>System, it shows that I have XP Pro even though I chose the XP Home option at boot. If I choose the XP Pro Setup option, it asks for the SP2 CD, even though the OS is bundled with SP2 on the same CD. I hit Enter, and it keeps asking for the SP2 CD even though the CD is in there. I tried to go to the Disk Management screen and delete the XP Pro Setup partition (which was only 1Gb), but that didn't work. So, I figured that boot.ini was still confused as to what to boot to.
I am using a new Windows XP home edition. i wanted to know how do i remove the two options i get before booting my system 1. Start Windows With Boot screen And 2. Start Windows Normally (Although Both Boot up similarly)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a new Toshiba notebook running windows XP Home SP2. I set it up with two account users. I eliminated the welcome screen so that the primary user will be logged on automatically on power on. This turned out to be not a good idea because the primary user must be logged on before the secondary user can log on and I can't get the welcome screen back. I have it checked in both user accounts as well as fast user switching. I don't remember how I eliminated it in the first place so I can't remember how to get it back. Any suggestions?

System is a Dell, 2years old and has had various viruses despite having the usual protection. I am currently using my old trusty Advent Pentium 3 for this message (which has never had the same degree of virus prob's curiously). After the first virus Dell talked me through using Ghost - brilliant. Within a couple of days it was hit again and usinng Spybot got rid of the virus but PC kept displaying the message rundll.dll file damaged. So I used XP Recovery seemingly with no problem only to find it won't reboot.
Now at the XP Welcome Screen, none of the users show up; I had 4 before I reinstalled XP. If I cnt-alt-del, I get a login screen with one of the users already in the user box. I never set a password for that user, but the login asks for one. A blank just gets an incorrect password response.
