Active Desktop And Taskbar Disappear And Screen Goes Black
Aug 27, 2005
When using internet explorer from time to time when i open or close a web page my active desktop and taskbar disappear and the screen goes black, then it gradually starts to reload fully again. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced the same problem, and if so,what is the cause of it?
I'm working on a Dell desktop with Windows XP Home at this point I don't have other info to give you, there are 3 users on this machine and anytime we log on to any of the accounts the program starts normal and everything comes up normal and then the desktop icons & task bar disappear for 3 to 4 seconds and reappear, this will happen several times until either everything comes up and stays or disappears for good, if I use ctrl/alt/delete and get to the task manager I can start explorer.exe and everything comes back to normal, as soon as we log off and log back on we get the same thing all over again, ran Ad-Aware SE Personal, Registry Mechanic, Spybot Search and Destroy, Xoftspy, cleaned everything up with the same results,
So yesterday my computer suddenly started getting slow, so I rebooted. When the machine boots, it's all fine, but just after the Windows loading screen, the screen goes black, and the only thing that's active is the mouse cursos which I can move. But I can't right click or anything etc.I can't bring up the Task Manager. I try loading in safe mode but it's still all black, with the expection that the text "Safe mode" is written around the black screen. So what I did was I got a Ultimate Boot CD and loaded from it. I managed to roll back my windows registry to 2003 (manufactor fresh), and now windows actually loaded and I didn't get the black screen anymore, however obviously it was all a complete mess having a registry from so long ago, so I backup rolled it back to the current again, and the black screen returned.
With that logic, shouldn't it be possible to do some tweaks to the registry to solve this issue? I'm a complete beginner and I barely even know the function of the registry. Everything i've tried so far i've just managed to google and follow step by step instructions, so bare with me. But judging from the tools in the Ultimate Boot CD, I can access the windows registry. So basically, where do I take it from here?
I am trying to open my active desktop, but I get a message that says IE cannot locate my active desktop html file. I need to find out how to fix this problem.
I was on Opera (as I am now) and IE just opened itself automatically, which I haven't used for ages, so I closed it straight away and assumed it was a spyware thing, so would scan my PC tomorrow. But when it closed, I got the eggtimer pointer and my taskbar disappeared and all my icons disappeared. I was going to print screen and save it, but because my taskbar has disappeared and my start menu cannot be accessed by the start button (as it went with the taskbar) or the windows key, I can't get to photoshop or paint or anything.
Anyway I think you get the idea, I can only use the programs that I had open which is Firefox and Opera. Anyone else encountered this, and know of any way to counter this, without restarting (as my PC doesn't like restarts, but that's a whole different kettle of fish)?
Every day about once or twice, I get extremely annoyed after my computer reaches 100% CPU usage and stays there, most of the times forcing me to sit in front of it, ending processes on Task Manager until finally I'm able to restart, taking 10 minutes of my time, especially because when I return to Windows after rebooting, my 4 toolbars in the taskbar, including 40+ shortcuts in the Quick Launch bar, disappear, forcing me to manually reorganize them (which I do with help from the latest screenshot I've taken).
The culprits are explorer.exe (surprise, surprise ), other times CCApp.exe (Norton Internet Security 2005's user session manager), and last time rundll32.exe, which I closed and then, believe it or not, firefox.exe was taking 100% CPU (I'm sure it has nothing to do with Firefox though, maybe a problem with an extension since I have more than 35, but I doubt it). I do not use Internet Explorer, and I don't have any viruses (just checked last night).
Also, spyware is out of the question here (checked about 3 days ago and I'm doing fine, in fact I haven't had any type of spyware in 3 or 4 months (since switching to Firefox it's almost like spyware doesn't exist, what a coincidence), other than tracking cookies, and I've checked with both Spybot and Ad-Aware SE 1.05 with all the most thorough settings).
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 5150 (3 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD), nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics card (latest nVidia drivers), latest BIOS from Dell, etc....
Had diffs yesterday with computer running at snail speed > did ad-aware/norton scans to clean up > now when I minimize any open window, the tab/s just disappear/s to the left of the lower taskbar so they can't be opened easily again. Must be an easy fix for this but after hours of research in MS Help + Google + your existing threads, haven't been able to source a solution. It happened once before but I can't recall how I got it going properly again - that's what age does to the memory!! Now when I have a PC prob & manage to solve it, I note the solution for the future!Would greatly appreciate any suggestions to solve this irritating prob.
Im having a problem with a black screen that has taken over my desktop that says: WARNING! Your computer might be infected with spyware or adware!! It goes on to say other stuff too.
when i try to open my computer from desktop or even certain programs like (ex DAP download accelerator is my default ) they show 'open' on my taskbar but i cant see the open folder. when i right click the tab on my taskbar and click maximize the tab just wizz past the right of my screen but i cant see it just only shows on my taskbar. When i do alt-tab it shows its there but dosent come up so i can see it .
I installed xp pro with slipstreamed SP2. I thought everything was going fine but just a split-second after I see the desktop, the screen goes black.Athlon XP 1600, ECS Elite K7AMA3 KT266A, Sapphire Radeon 9250 128DDR.
i turn on my desktop computer and i log on and open up my usual programmes then after a while the screen flashes black and back to normal screen , couple flashes later it goes black and the green power button flashes i have to turn it off and on again for it to restart but the problem is still the same.
I consider myself at least a bit competent when it comes to XP and computers... but this problem has me puzzled. I've done tons of searches on google, various forums, microsoft database, etc... and have found some similar problems except that I can't get my taskmanager to become visible. It's there, I know it because I get the resize pointers around the taskmanager's box.
Also, when I start-up WinXP. It gets to the login screen but I can't see my login picture or buttons. I can click on them and enter my password, but when it logs in (the windows start sound plays) the whole screen is black except for the mouse cursor (I don't have a wallpaper, just a black background, so I can't really tell you if my "wallpaper" is still there).
My desktop has decieded to add the 'menu' bar down trhe left had side of the screen. It is the same as the type which appears on the left hand side of open folders in XP. I created a new user account and it was OK until the screen went into screen saver and I needed to log back in and the problem was there again. This appears to have only started to happen when I added my XP laptop to the wired network.
I keep on getting an error message saying windows explorer has to close etc. that asks you if you want to send an error report.Whether you do or not, all the desktop icons disappear for a couple of seconds then reappear only for the same message to come up again. On the more information tab it suggests I download windows XP SP2 but when I try that it wont download. It does begin downloading alright but then as its about to install it just says file could not be found.I don't know if its a coincidence but this only began after I was downloading a file on Warez that stopped downloading near the end and just said the file was corrupt. After that is when this problem began.I can continue on with whatever I'm doing on the computer but I have constant error message on front of me.
My son has a Dell dimension 9100 The taskbar/start and all the desktop icons disappear and then reappear every 10-4 seconds All programs can still be accessed through start if you r quick enough!! otherwise throught the task manager. The system will not start in safe mode, only get a blue screen in safe mode, asdvising to run CHKDSK, which we have. Is the hard drive on its way out?? or does this sound repairable?
when I close Control Panel, my desktop icons disappear for a view seconds and then reappear. Same thing happens when I close a folder which has a shortcut on my desktop. I am not sure if this started directly after I uninstalled Norton 2002, and installed AC-Antivirus. I also noticed that my machine got slower. I have scanned the PC for viruses and spyware, and it seems to be OK My machine is a HP Pavilion 540n with Win XP sp2 Home Edition, 512 RAM DDR. Pentium 4 1,60 GHz
My problem is I have nothing on my desktop, no icons no tool bar. I cannot right click to get to properties. I can Control. Alt, Delete to get Task Manager and start a new process. After browsing for an application, I can get to any rogram/processor, but this is REALLY annoying. I have done a restore to 2 days ago and that didn't help. This just "happened" after the computer had been in use, screen saver turned on and then when I went to use it again, NOTHING.
Desktop ICONS always disappear when first user is selected, Computer motherboard is ASUS M3A78PRO/w AMD Phenon Quad Core 9500 CPU with 4GB Memory. OS is XP Pro. I am utilizing the on-board graphics card only. When I initially built and installed the XP-Pro Operating System, the system installed and worked perfect. After approximately six (6) months of use, and while attempting to utilize IE 8, the pop-up screens would only display in white, without any information. After working on the IE 8 problem for a week, I finally decided to scrubbed the hard drive with zeros an accomplished a clean install. Same problem appeared again. I accomplished a Mem-Test on the memory without any problems.
I got a client that sent me a hp pavilion 533w, and this thing is screwed up badly. The start menu, & desktop icons don't show up at all. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and run everything thru Windows Task Manager. Here's another thing, he has a WINDOWS Folder on his 20gig and another one on his 50gig. Ive tried everything from Windows OS CDs to Run format, WIN CD Repair, and all I get are errors. Give me a hand.
Evidently Teen went to porn site and somehow a black ball with a yellow x has appeared on taskbar and something about Win Anti Virus Pro 2006 free install, cannot delete, access denied.Porn windows replicating when opening XP.
I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky. now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu, etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
There are no icons or taskbar on my desktop, On any account that I log in on. Cannot access task manager or start menu. How do I recover my desktop? This is a dell desktop pc, windows xp
Turned on other computer this morning. The desktop wallpaper showed. There were no icons or taskbar. I right click on the desktop and nothing happens. I can do a ctrl+alt+del and access the task manager but have no idea on how to restore my desktop. When I startup in safe mode all I get is a black screen.
I have XP media edition and I was putting a jpg file on my desktop last week when it said something about active desktop. I was in a hurry so I clicked it and since then my desktop icons have dark blue labels, indicating that it is in active desktop mode, I guess.I don't like it but I can't find any way to get out of it and get back to normal. There is nothing in the help files about it or online as far as I can see.I even tried that program that reverts you to a previous day but that didn't work either.
When I click Display Desktop Customize I don't have a "Web" tab. I can't figure why I can't get an active desktop.I'm on Windows XP SP2 and IE 6. Any ideas?
I am running Win2kPro.Quite often when I reboot, everything loads fine with the cursor working but I cannot access anything including the start button. I try ctr/alt/delete and shut down running programs but still no help.I cold reboot a couple of times and finally get the white screen saying to restore active desktop - I do this and every thing is back to normal. That is the reason I think it may have something to do with active desktop but I am not sure.
Somehow or other, I've lost the ability to show web content on my xp pro desktop. In particular, I'd like to show some photos, but the desktop->properties->desktop->custom->web list has no effect at all.
