I noticed that under the "services" tab in msconfig, I have a strange entry that has a tick mark showing it to be active. Here it is: xxId_String1.6844F930 _1628_B5CC_5bb94B879762 Manufacturer: Unknown

my work colleagues is having trouble with a slow-running computer i thought I'd look at her startup options and make sure there isn't something running that doesn't need to be. I ran msconfig and looked at what she had going at startup, but only the necessary items were checked there. So I took a look at the services panel, using a list from blackviper.com to make sure her computer's settings matched up with those recommendation. However, one of the services listed isn't on the blackviper.com list: Winkcpw. Nor did I get any hits for the name of the service on either Google or using Yahoo search. I'm wondering if anyone here knows what the program is and whether it should be running at all.

You have been so helpful in the past and I am seeking help again. My husband understand this a little more than I so I had him type our concern below. Thank you in advance I hope you have a solution to our problem. Had Windows98
1.(E: Drive) CDROM that came with PC
2.(D: Drive) Installed a 2nd CDROM (TDK) With Read/Write Capabilities (Used Roxio software)
3.(F: Drive) Installed an adapter for about 4 USB ports to upload pictures
Then we installed WindowsXP, Professional Edition.
1.The CDROM that came with PC still worked
2.The Installed CDROM could at first create music CD's but not with the Roxio Software
3.We could not create data CD's
4.We could upload pictures from digital camera for a while.
5.Now, for some reason, the D:, E: or the F: drives are not recognized. When a CD is placed into the D: or E: drive, a message pops up to the screen to enter a CD into the drive. We went into the Device Manager in the Control Panel, but it shows that all of the drives are working properly. Im thinking that it might have something to do with the Windows Registry, but thats scary. And since its WindowsXP, the boot up disk is actually the CD and thats no good, because the CD player is inoperable.

When i try to use msconfig to turn off several startup programs, no matter what I chose, when I click apply and ok, and close msconfig, and then open msconfig again, all the programs i tried to turn off have a tick by them again... there seems to be some junk programs there - i use AntiVir Guard as virus protection, so I guess it's unlikely to be a virus

I found something in my Add/Remove Programs called "My Way Search Assistant", which I removed - evidently successfully,as there is no trace of it in registry or programs. My problem is, however, the entry in Add/Remove remains but only with the name "My Way Search Assistant" and when I click on it all that shows is "Used Rarely"It has no size and no longer has any option to change or remove.I have looked for registry entries there are none is there a program listed.

I know that when you have windows 98 and you type msconfig in the run then you click on the tab saying startup you can remove unnecessary things from loading that will only slow down your computer. But on windows 2000 pro when I type msconfig it says it is not there - what do I use to remove unnecessary things from starting up that are not kneeded to run the computer ?And what should stay there and load at startup so the computer has no problems ?

I was checking my daughters pc for some usual maintenance. The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?

I used to be able to run MSCONFIG and now I can't. I've tried the Start/Run thing several times. I've downloaded an XP version, and copied it to the WindowsSystem folder and tried it from there too, but I can't even get that to run.

msconfig won't run at start. Windows cannot find msconfig. It's there physically (I had to manually find it - Search won't work either)
I think it's a registry error. I looked where another forum "told me" to look, and I had different entries.

When I go to the Start menu, then click Run and type in msconfig, nothing happens. Could I have inadvertently changed some setting or somehow altered the configuration? Or have I screwed up in some other, more arcane, way.

Occasionally, as with this file, when I Google it or look for info elsewhere, I can find NOTHING. I mean, "no matches meet your search criteria." This one is: ost1f144.exe. Anyone out there know what this little bad boy is? It's shown as being in WindowsSystem32. Think I'll uncheck it for the time being.

However, when I run my mouse over that square, it disappears as well. PC is running XP Home. I've scanned PC with McAfee - no viruses found. Also cleared with AdAware and Spybot. What can I do. Have XP, service pack 2, and all updates. Use Norton, MS Antispyware, Adaware, Spybot, and weekly check with online virus check programs. Machine is clean (I hope). Have 2 user accounts on the machine. Had email issues with the ISP and got resovled/ I could open Outlook Express from my user account, but then my wife's user account wouldn't open Outlook Express at all. Thought I would try in Safe Mode to see if maybe some other program was interfering. NOTE: I did no harware or software change. Went to msconfig, and clicked on Safeboot.
