We are running VIP payroll and the program exe sits on a server and is run through a mapped drive. On one XP PC we get a warning message asking if we want to run the application or cancel. We do I tell XP that it's

I was clicking around, trying to reduce the security setting in Windows in order to download a needed .exe file. Can't remember what I did but now a dialogue box opens for every .exe file I try to use. This brought to my attention the regsvr32.exe file that looks like its not supposed to be in the system32 folder and could be malware. issues: turning off the dialogue box that opens everytime i open a program and identifying and deleting malware especially the regsvr32.exe.I notice the regsvr32 isn't listed as a running process in the HJT log - because I cancelled it in the dialogue box instead of allowing it to run. Which is a good thing. I'd like to return to normal and disable the open file dialoge box, but remove regsvr32 first so it doesn't run automatically.

Googling for the answer only came up with how to disable this for files on a network (by adding to zone) and when downloading files in IE. Could anyone tell me where in the registry this can be disabled? Also, I have Home Edition, so no access to gpedit.msc

It says something about it being from an unknown publisher and am I sure I want to open it. It's really annoying... I've been using these programs for yrs. Can't it at least remember my answer when I say yes and not ask every time I open them? Anyway, this has only started happening recently, so I'm sure it's the result of some setting that has been changed by a Windows update. I looked in the Control Panel under Security Center, but that only seems to deal w/ internet security. So how can I turn this off?

I can open page on one computer and not the other. I've gone into Tools, IE, etc. etc, unchecking anything to do with ActiveX, but nothing is working.I am trying to open a virtual tour of a hotel. I've disabled pop ups. I can't download ActiveX. Everytime the ActiveX bar comes up, the Windows blocked software message comes appears.

View 1 Replies View Relatedthis is not a BSOD because the message is only my backgroud, my computer functions fine despite it. I ran a whole slew of antivirus stuff and killed off a bunch of nasty buggers, but the message didn't go away.I went to Display Properties and there were only two tabs, Screen Savers, and Settings. It was missing the Appearance, Themes, and Desktop tabs. So I went on here and found something about changing the registry files from 1 to 0 in a couple places. Well I got the tabs back, but I still cannot change my desktop background. It's all greyed out. My computer is functioning fine now and is armed to the teeth against new stuff, but it still has that annoying BSOD look-a-like.

In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).

I do have it set so that it remembers (most of the time) to re-open that folder with the file view it was in when it was closed, but I want XP to open every new and old folder with the "file details" view. View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently I reinstalled XP Home Edition and XP Pro using a slipstreamed installation disk contain SP2 and the latest hotfixes. Following those installations I found that I could not easily access any Drive Image (pqi) files that were created under the newly installed operating systems. The images could be restored but only after booting from the Drive Image rescue floppies. I also was not able to open and explore any of those images using Drive Image ImageExplorer. Images created prior to these installation could be opened and restored within windows with Drive Image. To access the images created under the new OS installation I had start the Home Edition in the safe mode and the go the image file, right click and select security. Then I had to add my user name under services and then check full control. In the XP Pro system I had to disable simple file protection and then change the security settings in a similar manner. This all had to be done even though the user has full administrator rights. I've been using Drive Image 2002 for the last 2 years for backups on both Home Edition and Pro versions of XP so this behavior is something I believe is new an possible a result of security updates included in the new installations. I really need access to these images from within windows but I also need to retain simple files sharing on my XP Pro machine.

It only appears when I do a defragment with various defragmenters. It's the only file remaining that won't defragement. I do not have anyway to access it, isolate it, or find where it is within my laptop. My various anti-spyware and security software does not recognize it as harmful. It's slowing down my laptop. I don't know when this broke, I know I used to be able to open chm files with no trouble but I can't pinpoint the last time it worked.I've searched around and found some references to this, but no solution -the only relevant MSKB is for Win98. I tried regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx, deleting the hh.dat files, clearing IE's file cache; nothing has helped. I haven't made any significant recent changed to the system that I can think of.
