So my computer has been running perfectly normal lately (with the exception of a Vundo trojan infection, which I removed about 2 days prior to this)Last night I was burning a DVD (I do this all the time) and a couple hours later when I look at my computer it's at a black DOS-like screen that says the following:"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys"
My computer is a Gateway, so I have their restore disk. I really don't want to have to reformat Windows though. Is there another way to fix this? I have the option to "Repair" using the Gateway restore disks too, but I'm worried that will either delete my files or screw something up
my home network might have a virus, programs start up and suddenly close/disappear. On one of the computers an error comes up and says that windows is shutting down(lass.exe file), then it shuts down and reboots. My anti-virus software can't detect nothing. I downloaded the sasser fix and it doesn't detect anything.
Here goes, the other day I booted up my PC and it showed "windows can not boot, ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt" so I did this. Microsoft support. I replaced the file in the recovery console and everything copied over fine. Then I booted up again and I received an error message before windows displayed my login screen --lsass.exe "endpoint is invalid" click ok and my computer reboots. Windows at that time was booting all the way up though. I found this support article but did not help Microsoft support This error does not allow me to boot into safe mode or regular windows but I can get into the recovery console.
XP pro computer tells me this when i turn it on. Offers to load in safe mode first, then tells me its lost/broken this file, push r to repair. Push r and it restarts. Cant work out how to fix this problem, and not liking the name ntfs in the error at all.
I plugged in and switched it on it has been crashing intermittently. This occurs at random intervals and does not seem to be related to whichever program I am using. The monitor goes black and the pc reboots but does not get as far as windows, displaying the message:windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys"unable to do this because after pressing "r" at the first "welcome to set-up" screen I get the message:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drive(s) installed on your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered up and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or Setup program. Setup cannot continue. To exit Setup press F3"
So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message.... Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configSYSTEM Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts. I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
When left for a while (about half an hour), I come back to it and see that the screen is black with something about a system disk error. I experienced this before I had to re-install windows a few weeks back. The first time, I pressed enter, and the system started up fine. The second time, the secondary loading screen (that's what I call it...it's like little white rectangles at the bottom of a black screen...you know the ne, right?). Well yeah that goes really really slow. When it get's a few inches in, it stops and tells me 'system32driverstfs.sys is missing or corrupt'.
I come to boot up the computerwhen booting in normal mode or safe mode I get the message system32/drivers/ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt please insert original windows disk and press 'r' on the first screen. so i put in the disk and it says boot CD but then after a while it just comes up with the same message telling me to insert original disk.I have tried this now with 2 different windows disks, iv changed to boot settings and this still does not work.
All my desktop icons are missing ,start menu missing, only thing i could see is wallpaper on desktop right click is laso not working,i could only use ctrl+ alt+del to open task mgr and run a program what should i do to take them back.
I have 2 internal HDDs, and 3 external HDDs. However, the recent addition of a Mac by my sister has forced me to be able to share the external HDDs between computers. I understand that the Mac OSX reads/not writes NTFS but will read/write FAT32. Having been advised by other senior Windows users many years back, all my HDDs are in NTFS. I have found no solution to convert NTFS back to FAT32. Does anyone know if you can do so; without damage/corruption? There is much family pictures, common music in these external HDDs; so needless to say, they are precious
I have fixed this problem in the past in repair mode and i want to do the same with this, but, there is no filename at the end of the statement see below Windows could not start because the following file is corrupt or missing windowssystem32configsystem Can this be fixed in repair mode without having to be reformated or reimaged.
When I turn on comp. get the mssg: Windows couldn't start following file missing <Windows root>/system32/hal.dll Reinstall copy of file Recovery does not work. Tried to boot from a cd (changed BIOS to cd as 1st boot device) with win xp setup boot disk downloaded from MS site. Get same error mssg.
Quote: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file." That message appeared after trying to reboot my desktop earlieir today. I immediately got on my laptop and started google'ing a solution. I came across this page:
restarted the computer just coming off of vista and I boot up xp after logging in at first the task bar appears for about 10 seconds and then just vanishes. I bloody hate my PC. I mean the whole task bar is missing, the start bar is there if I click 'CTRL ESC'OH And I do have a 'media center' theme running.
On my other Windows XP, I cannot get windows to start or something.I start up the computer and I get to the log on screen and I log on.However, then a window pops up saying "wininet.dll" could not be found and explorer.exe couldn't load. Then my desktop does not show up and the start menu doesn't, and it's just my background.
I had a registry problem based on my description. JJ suggests repair using MS registry repair and rewriting software. Can I use the software if I can not boot up? Do I simply start the system with the repair software loaded in the drive? Emachine 4160, XP Home. Error message, " Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt, WindowsSystem32ConfigSystem. I tried tapping F8 during startup to get to Safe Mode, no luck. I can use the restore disc to reload but I want to save my wife's pictures on the exiting hard drive.
I have had the following error message appear when i start my PC NTLDR Missing, When i press ctl alt del to restart the same things happens and i go around in circles. I have put the XP disk in to hopefully boot from that but the PC will not pick up the disk and start from it. I have looked in the bios to change where the system is looking but still no joy, can anyone else point me in the right direction?.
was cleaning up PC, ran spybot/virus scan then turned my attention to the hard drive. When I ran Error Checking though, it took MUCH longer than normal and when I rebooted the taskbar was missing and IE would no longer start. This is XP Prof SP2 btw. I checked the obvious taskbar settings, tried restarting explorer.exe via task manager, ran sfc, undid the changes made by spybot and still nothing. I also tried to system restore, but it wont let me load it, saying "system restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer and try system restore again."
I was cleaning up my brothers labtop, ran spybot/virus scan then turned my attention to the hard drive. very routine, but when i ran error checking it had a lot to work with (took much longer than normal) and when it finished I booted back up to find the taskbar missing and IE no longer working. Ive tried restarting explorer.exe via task manager, did a sfc, and reversed the changes made by spybot. System restore gives me an error when I try to start it, saying it cannot help my system.
I turn on my computer today and everything loads up. I click on fire fox to do my usual morning surfing and then I realize I have to check my outlook express. I minimize the firefox and it DISAPEARS! Not reduced to the task bar thing, becuase it (Along with the Start Button) are gone! How do I get them back!
I have xp and when i start my cmputer i get this Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt windowssystem32configsystem,I don't seam to be able to enter safe mode with f8 pressed.
When trying to turn on my computer i get the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windowssystem32configsystem You can attempts top repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. i have done endless searches on my desktop to try to find a step by step out of this problem. i have followed such things as: >>Problem: You turn off your computer one day and then go to restart to find an error message that says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt C:windowssystem32configsystem You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.
I've recently had some corruption to my c: drive as a result of resizing using Partion Magic 7. I managed to run chkdsk via Recover Console and was then able to boot. But now the Task Bar does not show. Also it thinks there is new hardware. I can run some application via the icon on the Desktop but not others. Does any one know of a way to resolve this? Am I running XP sp2.
I shut down my laptop before I left last night and when I hope, my system didnt shut down all the way and there was a blue screen saying an error had occurred and if this was the first time I had seen the message to shut the ocmputer down and restart it.I did as instructed. When I powered it back up, I recieved a message saying Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root"system32 toskrnl.exe. Please reinstall a copy of the above file. The problem is, I don't have the XP cd as my laptop came pre-installed. A friend suggested I go into the safe mode and do a system restore to the last saved date.
I was unable to start Windows XP and was in a sort of start-up loop. I reinstalled Windows and I have had to start again from scratch. Everything seems to be working OK but when I start up each day I get messages to say that certain files have been lost due to a hardware or network failure and to save these files elsewhere.
I was recently given a compaq sr1330nx desktop computer that didn't work. After putting in a different power supply it started right up. It hadn't been used in over a year and I downloaded the 62 high priority updates needed and installed them. The next morning when I started it up it was very slow and unresponsive. I ran the error check utility and defragmented the hard drive. Still very slow and inconsistent. Then is when I probably screwed up and reset the 2 jumpers on the motherboard and went into the bios and checked "reset configuration". Now all I can get is a line of white bars across the bottom of a black screen and the message "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:windowssystem32configsystem. You can attemt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom. select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
My son in his wisdom decided to clear some of his long long list of updates from his Laptop and get a set of fresh updates. Now he can't start Windows or in Safe Mode. Where Explorer.exe cannot start, because a normaliz.dll is missing and it freezes the cursor and keys on the log-on page. Can't get to restore or etc. Done a chkdsk, all ok. Can this be repaired using the XP CD in recovery mode, if so how.
I think this is a major problem I did a system restore on my home pc and it went to the hardware screen showing NTLDR is missing, I assume its a windows file and although it says press cont+alt+del to restart, it doesnt work , can anyone help as I dont have a windows XP cd as it came already set up, also how on earth has it happened simply from doing a restore?
