Explorer.exe Missing Normaliz.dll - Won't Start?
May 13, 2010
My son in his wisdom decided to clear some of his long long list of updates from his Laptop and get a set of fresh updates. Now he can't start Windows or in Safe Mode. Where Explorer.exe cannot start, because a normaliz.dll is missing and it freezes the cursor and keys on the log-on page. Can't get to restore or etc. Done a chkdsk, all ok. Can this be repaired using the XP CD in recovery mode, if so how.

i ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools. The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.Same thing happens in safe mode.

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

Not sure how that happened or if i have a virus of some sort. I cannot see in IE the file-edit-tools-windows menu at the top of the navagation icons. I have a virus scanner that updates daily, so may be that my grand daughter changed something. How do i restore them back to the way it was?

Clicking on the IE icon - At the top of the page it says "Internet Explorer cannot find Server."Under that, the message reads - "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable."Beneath that next to a "security" icon, the message reads - "To help protect your security, IE has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer."Clicking on the Juno icon for their website, the message reads, "Juno was unable to connect to its central computers."This is my Dad's computer (the computer I registered for TechGuy.Org). He is 92 years old, and would dearly love to get back on the internet. He has been receiving the above messages for over two years since he lost the Juno internet service.

Last week my Windows Explorer Toolbar disappeared. When I open "my documents" or any other folder on my computer, the top toolbar isn't present.I can't access the file menu, change folder views, or anything.I've run several checks for viruses or malware using McAfee and AdAware with no significant results.I suspect it's a problem in Windows, but I can't figure out how to repair it.I keep Windows up to date, and running extremely lean. I have few extra processes running.I attempted a system restore back to the day before the problem occurred. Upon startup, I would get an error message stating Windows Explorer Must Close. I did an un restore.

I keep my mp3's in one folder, called mp3 (of course). There used to be a load of columns for album, artist, duration, etc etc, but they are now all missing. I've tried the obvious way of adding them back again, but the options aren't there anymore (view - details, choose details). Also - and this may be a helpful clue, when I hover the cursor over the mp3's I no longer get the pop up details of the file other than the basic MP3 file and file size - same if I click on it -in the left hand pane of explorer there are no longer details about the file.

This is one of those times that windows loses it's mind and decides a setting is better off another way. Completely at random, the windows Explorer has lost all it's toolbars. Not a big problem, but still a minor annoyance. The strange thing is that internet explorer, when opened and pointed to c: for instance has the appropriate toolbars. (plus IE's links bar) However, explorer is toolbarless, but there is apparently something that can be dragged, meaning the double-headed arrow appears but nothing is actually drag-gable.Also, something I noticed that may or may not be normal behavior: When I double click on the icon at the top left of the title bar, it closes the window.

I have no idea why this looks like it does. Take a look at the image and try to tell me why my menubar, address bar and navigation links have gone missing from my windows. If I double click a folder on my desktop or right click a folder in windows explorer and click "Open", the window that opens shows up like this:Has anyone ever seen this? Attention: window behaviour is normal when windows explorer is openned by pressing <WindowsKey> + E. I repeat: windows display normal menus and bars when I open using the shortcut key.

I'm running Win XP, and earlier today, I decided to start using Win 7 theme. I used the replacer, to replace some XP files with Win 7 ones (including explorer.dll) and I did everything as it was supposed to. After the reboot, my explorer was missing (files, folders, menu bar, everything). So, I open the task manager, click on "New Task...", type in "explorer.exe" and it says: "explorer.exe is not a valid Win32 application". Then, I click on "Browse...", go to C/Windows and there are 2 explorer files. explorer.exe and explorer.scf. When i double click on .scf, it also says that "explorer.scf is not a valid Win32 application.I've been googling for hours now, but haven't found an answer to my problems. And I really don't feel like re-installing or repairing my current Windows.

It all happened 2 days ago on my Compaq Presario R3000 laptop when I decided to uninstall the newest version of Internet Explorer 7. Because I didn't like Internet Explorer and all the stuff I heard about it containing some bugs, I decided to uninstall it.So I went through Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and searched for Internet Explorer 7. I clicked on the one that only said "Internet Explorer 7" and it took me to this uninstalling phase.
It then warned me that most programs would "freak out" if I have done so by uninstalling Internet Explorer 7. So I decided to ignore it and take the risk, a risk that I was going to pay very soon.It took a few minutes of deleting the files and stuff, then I had to reboot, upon logging on to my account this error message pops up stating: "This application has failed to start because iertutil.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I'm using windows xp.When I right click on Start and then go to Explorer, my standard toolbar and buttons are missing. I've tried everything - right clicking, that only gives me the choice to close the "toolbar" which are just all the folders on the left on the screen. When I go to my computer from the start menu on XP, the standard toolbar and buttons are there, just missing when I right click on the start menu. I could live without it, but it is my habit to get to my folders that way and it is really annoying not to have the menu options.

I am missing everything from my desktop except for the background pic. The only way I can open programs and files is to go through the Windows Task manager and open them individually. While trying to fix the problem, I noticed explorer.exe is no where to be found. Has anyone ever heard of this problem and if so, is there any way to fix it without having to reload windows or do a system repair?

I was listening to music yesterday when this randomly happened. I can manually start explorer.exe through the task manager, everything appears for a few seconds, but then it disappears again. I have tried system restore, and restore to last known good configuration, but they didn't work. I ran my spysweeper, and it picked up an adware called "Virtumonde".
