On a HP Pavillion with Win XP Home the display goes blank after the Boot UP logo with the sliding progress graphic.I've tried all the safe modes and the last driver it shows loading is agp440.sys and then nothing else ever happens.I tried installing another video card and had the same symptoms.Knoppix boots with just a passed mode error but continues and appears to work OK.I belive that HP's restore image on the HD will wipe out the primary partion so I am hoping that someone can point out another way to fix this.
On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.
I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.
Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.
Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?
it all started when I ran Nod32 antivirus. I ran it because I had some viruses on my computer that I wanted to get rid of. After the scan there were 180 some detected objects that were quarantined or deleted. So then I restart my computer and after the windows xp logo there is just a black screen with no cursor. And after awhile the computer will just restart and try booting up again. I tried going into safe mode and safe mode with command prompt but I still get a black screen with no cursor. The last known good configuration doesn't work either. I'm pretty frustrated because I did nothing wrong. I am also having a feeling that nod32 might have quarantined some infected files that are essential for Windows Xp to boot. I also do not have any windows xp disks with me how to fix this?
I have windows xp prof running and now when i turn on the computer it boots up, goes to the logo, and then the screen goes blank. The hard drive is still working, and i can go into safemode (f8) but every time i try to startup normally the screen just goes blank, the monitor says there is no signal. I have no clue how to go about resolving this.
I had been away from my computer for about an hour and when i returned the screen was black and nothing would change it so hit the restart button. When the computer started up, I first saw the usual blue dell logo-screen, however, the next screen was the windows 98 startup logo-screen. The computer then entered DOS mode and at the top of the screen it says Microsoft Windows 98. This problem persists every time i start the computer. I only have 1 primary partion and i installed XP on it from a clean install by using a win98 bootdisk to format and running winnt from the i386 folder of the xp cd. When i try to enter SAFE MODE the computer goes to the Win 98 start-up logo screen again and enters DOS again. I know that all my files are still on the HDD because i can navigate through them. All i really want to do is somehow save some files that are on te HDD so i can just format and reinstall XP.
I originally had XP Pro when the problem first started. When booting, the normal boot screen will come up with the "compaq" logo and F1 for setup f10 for restore, and then normally proceeds to the windows xp pro screen with the scrolling bar at the bottom. Now on boot, this bar will stay scrolling acting like it is trying to boot and it takes literally anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days to start up. I used restore points and the same thing happened. When I start in safe mode, the normal safe mode multidisk prompt comes up and even that will stay on winsys32driversagp330.sys for the same amount of hours before it finally boots up. I also reinstalled my windows xp.
when I first start the computer, windows hangs between the black windows logo screen and the first blue screen that says "windows is starting". I have to hit the reset button, it goes to the dos screen with the safe mode, etc. choices. I choose "start using last known good configuration" and I'm good to go. If I turn the computer off during the day and turn it back on, It works fine. It only hangs on the first start of the day.
My ACER Aspire pc won't boot past the Windows Logo. I tried to boot in safe mode but had the same problem. I am running XP home addition. It just keeps going round in circles, I get the Acer logo, then Windows and keeps repeating itself. I tried all the f8 options ie safe mode and starting from last known config but to no avail.
It is possible to disable XP splash screen, which will slightly speed up the overall boot process. Be aware that removing the splash screen will also cause you not to see any boot-up messages that might come up (chkdsk, convert ), but if your system runs without any problems then it should not matter.1. Edit boot.ini2. Add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect".(or check the /noguiboot switch in msconfig on the boot.ini tab)Upon restarting, the splash screen will be gone. It can be re-enabled by removing the new switch.
my PC, after the xp logo, it hangs, i have to restart about 3 times to fix it, i have ran anti virus, and spyware scan, i think its a software/driver issue, any ideas how i can figure out what it is?
When I try normal boot, windows hangs up on XP logo screen. The hdd indicator tells me there is no more hdd access. When using save mode, windows starts until black screen with note "save mode" in the edges appears, then hangs up, also no more hdd access.Booting with options "last known working config" and other options does not work, too. (always the same result - hang up with no more hdd action). In my last working session i did not change any config, installed programs or so. Just using office package, acrobat, photoshop, icq and skype.Shutdown without any problems.
Got an HP Pavilion 563w with Pentiun 2.4, and 512 MB of ram, running an oem XP. One day, I tried to start it up, and it booted to the Windows logo screen with the black bar. The bar went across twice, then froze. Nothing else happens after that. Tried Known Good Configuration, same thing. Tried safe mode, stops at mup.sys. I tried to get into Recovery console, but doesnt seem to recognize my hard drive, as my only choices are off of the CD (Drive letter e). Tried to repair system files with an XP upgrade cd, and it tells me there's no operating system installed, and that I need to verify my install by loading the installation cd, which I dont have. So I tried to use the HP system restore feature on my computer, but it only gives me the option to reformat, and not repair. I am the fool who did not regularly back up files, so I still have some on there I would like to have. I thought I could install this drive as a slave in my newer computer, but the hard drive setup in that computer is SATA, and my problem child is an IDE drive. I did not install anything new (hardware or software) that I can remember in the days before it went south.
I have been running a P4 3.2ghz computer that I have built for some time now. The problem is that my son kept pushing the power button when I was at work. Now the computer reboots when it hits the windows logo screen. I've tried to boot in safe mode but it stops loading files then reboots. I've also tried last good know configuration. I can't even get into safe mode command prompt. I've tried using the recovery console and typing in chkdsk and fixboot but that does not help. I also don't see an option for the repair xp.
I'm removing spy & adware from a friend's PC, using spybot, adaware, and Norton AV. It seems to have worked, but one odd little problem exists. During the boot process, when the "Windows XP" logo with the moving blue bar disappears, the screen goes black, then the blue background loads for the "Windows is starting" screen - this is all normal. Before that screen appears, though, a large popup window appears, with just a few "boxes" for letters (bad font?), a red X to close it out and an "Ok" button. Clicking the red X does nothing except make the background go black. Clicking Ok is the only way to move past it, then the boot continues as normal. This does not happen in safe mode. I've gone through msconfig and disabled the startup programs, can't see anything in either win or system ini files.
I use my comp alot and installinguninstalling all sorts of stuff.. requiring reboots blah blah blah.. Checking out some other boot times my system seems abit slow.. or it's me being impatiant. My Boot Time is 38 seconds. I've tried every trick on the web i can find.. Programs, Reg edits, MSConfig etc.. and nothing seems to be saving me anytime at all.the only thing that saved me time was uninstalling Zone Alarm saving me 8 seconds, going from 46secs to 38secs.
System timings: 12 secs - BIOSRAID ControllersSystem list 3 secs - Blank 7 secs - Windows Logo with blue bar 7 secs - Blank 9 secs - Windows loadingDesktop loaded with all icons....
My Laptop is an HP Pavilion ze2000, and I when I turn it on, it goes to the HP logo screen, then the Windows XP screen, then restarts and does that same process. I do not have my startup disk, and also, it won't let me boot the computer in safe mode, last known configuration or anything.
When I set CHKDSK to run at next restart, it does NOT display the usual CHKDSK text interface with the runnning progress of the operation. Instead it runs while displaying the Windows Logo screen, not with a running progress bar like ususal though. The logo screen color pallette freezes until CHKDSK is done, then the machine reboots like normal. What happened to my CHKDSK text display? This also happens when I set Diskeeper 7.0 to run at boot time. Instead of the Diskeeper text display, it does the same thing as CHKDSK. Any ideas?
Running XP-Pro for many years --- no h/w or s/w changes and suddenly at Boot Up my system proceeds correctly 'till the XP splash. At which time the the splash fades to a Blank Screen - then minutes later I can see my mouse then a minute later I get to the welcome screen. (the sytem will reboot but takes for ever and gives me this blank screen)
I boot my computer up and its fine till it reaches the logon screen. There are no users to select to logon let alone the shutdown button. Now I have changed the logon screen from its default one, however, It worked fine for almost a year... so i really doubt thats the problem. Due to this problem I Installed XP Home [running as dual boot] so that i may fix the problem. XP Home works fine and i tried to replace the XP Pro Logonui.exe with the XP Home one. I also went into the recovery console and replaced the ntldr and ntdetect files. None of these worked and i still have the same problem. I would like to avoid reformatting simply because I have vital information that i would like to keep.
I can't get pass the windows logo. I can't boot into safe mode, can't boot into last knowm configuration or boot to a crompt. I don't have a recovery disc. Can anybody help?
I am running XP Pro SP2 and today it stopped booting, when I turn my computer on it boots fine until it should display the windows logo where the screen is black and it does nothing. My computer has been working for 6 months or so since the last reformat. I tried to boot in to safe mode but it gets stuck on loading C:/windows/system32/config/system so I'm assuming that file is corrupt. After realising this I have decided to reformat but I would like to back up first so I downloaded 'damn small linux' but while in 'damn small linux' a lot of my files don't appear and if I try to copy files between my two partitions I get a read-only error message.
I've had an infinite reboot cycle for the last 3 days now, and I still cannot figure out why. I have been looking at other cases and are quite similar to mine but not exact. This is my problem
I have XPP and one day my computer got a BSOD. Then through out the weeks it had a few (5-6 maybe) BSODs. And one day I started up the computer and it went to the windows splash screen, the logo, and rebooted itself. Being frantic on my 6 month old computer, I let it reboot by itself...and it went on like that for a while. It continues to ask me if I want to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, the last good known configuration, or start windows normally. I have tried all of the options and they lead me down the same road...infinite and continuous rebooting at the logo.
The other night I was on my computer when some strange things began to happen. Any program I tried to open would not open, and then the shortcuts on my desktop changed icons to the folder icon and the text dissapeared. I couldn't do anything, so I just figured it was some freak bug or something. I couldn't run any spyware or virus programs because it wouldn't let me open any programs. So I try to shut it down, and no matter how many times I clicked on shut down I still had to hold the button in to shut it off. Now, when I restart my computer, it seems to load just fine but when it gets to the blue screen with the windows xp logo on it, it just stops. The mouse cursor is there and I can move it but it never gets past the blue screen. I tired loading it in safe mode and it loads all the files up through mup.sys, which I have learned is the last file that loads so it is something after that. I have tried to start it using the last good configuration and still no luck. Any ideas? Do you think it is spyware/virus or just a corrupt system file?
when i start up it shows the compaq logo then theres some beeps and it goes to a black screen. Any help? any way to reset all my stuff? i press f11 and it goes to some bios thing and i really dont know what to do.
Today I decided to do a system restore on my HP desktop computer. It was running painfully slow, to many un-needed programs etc. So I backed up all the files that I needed to keep and save to my external hard drive. The computer did not come with an operating disk so the only way I could get it back to sorta normal is to do the system restore. After I backed up all my files I restarted the computer and pressed F11 or 12 cant remember the one for system recovery/restore. About 12 seconds into the restore/recovery thing I accidentally hit the power switch under the table When I turned the computer back on I presses the F11 button again and this time made sure nothing bad happened. After it completed its task I clicked OK and restarted the computer.
The PC is now over a year old and has been running fine for about a year.

Now about 6 months ago, I started to get the Nvidia card sentinal saying the Graphics Card isnt getting enough power and will reduce its performance to prevent any damage. I checked it all out and it appear to be fine so pretty much ignore the issue.
I have a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV model ST380021A. Don't know if it's SATA or not. I have a SOYO SY-P4VTP M/B. After I do a clean/new install on a formatted drive, (I even installed the SATA drivers that came w/ the mobo just in case) the computer freezes on reboot after the initial installation where it says "Setup will continue after reboot" or something like that. @ the bootscreen with the logo, the bluish bar scrolls a couple of times and freezes. Does anyone know why? I tried installing at a friends house and it worked fine so I know it's not a harddrive error but I place it in mines and it doesn't work so I create a new install and same problem.. I know it's not a temp issue since it's running < 100 F. THis is a genuine copy of XP. Just in case I used my friends.
Hey I'm running an ASUS K8V-SE Deluxe mobo w/ Windows XP Pro. When I turn on my computer it sort of hangs up on the first screen where it shows the ASUS manufacturers logo or whatever. I believe this is where it is running POST tests in the background, I've hit DELETE before to see whats happening during this and its auto detecting Primary Drives and stuff like that. Well within 20-30 seconds of that the screen goes blank and theres a one little blinking cursor for about 3 seconds then the cursor jumps down a line and blinks twice and finally the Windows XP loading screen comes up.
