When I go to reinstall my XP Pro I'm getting a message that a problem has been detected and that windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. It also says to disable BIOS memory options sucj as caching or shadowing. Check with your vendor for any BIOS updates. I suppose I could try to find something that would let me format the hard drive?

All works super...drivers, hardware, all software.You know that things not always work after a re-install.I like to upgrade my oldish mobo/cpu and then of course newer DDR2 RAM.Is there a way to make these upgrades without having to reinstall XP. I tried this before and of course XP doesn't load all new drivers automatically.I heard I can go into the XP bootup screen and do a repair.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently had motherboard problems with my computer.Swapped the motherboard for one given to me off a forum.The problem now is that on boot I get past the windows splash and get the BSOD.The error code was just a hex code for which google was not my friend.I could boot in safe mode (without cmd prompt or networking only), but I could not work out what the problem was.I have compounded the issue by using the XP install disc to perform a repair.All that has done is made it so i cannot boot in safe mode at all now due to the setup restriction with safe mode.I believe this is all to do with motherboard drivers that I need to fix.I probably need help in canceling the repair, and how to clean out the existing drivers.I have in the meantime installed Ubuntu to allow access to attempt repair.I would prefer not to have to do a full reinstallation if could be avoided.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased and installed a RadiSys Endura EM945G MOBO with my old PATA HDD (Seagate ST38001A) and have hit a brick wall. First of all I put the IDE to SATA adapter on the HDD and applied power and data cables. The drive will not spin up at all. I tried changing the bios (Phoenix Award 5J1R2P34) options for the SATA to every option (combined, enhanced and SATA only) to no avail. Any clues on that would be helpful, however.
to circumvent this and just get the PC running I put the drive on the IDE controller by itself. It spins up and attempts to boot but goes into a cyclic reboot. I suspect it is being caused by the old AGP driver being loaded. This MOBO has onboard PCI graphics so I don't need the AGP driver at all. I've tried every safe boot option but still no go. Back in the old days you could do a step by step confirmation to loads selected drivers. Is that possible with WinXP (SP2)? I could try making a bootable CD and putting the CD drive on as a second (slave) drive on single IDE controller but don't know how I would modify/delete the AGP driver if I did get it to boot.
I have a Dell pc and the mobo just fried and of course I didnt take the extended warranty, so I bought a new mobo (asus) now that everything is back together it won't let me activate. When I use the 800 number they say that the product can't be activated.

I checked the motherboard to see if I could change the boot order to USB but all I could change it too was "Removable Devices" which I then put in the #1 spot to boot. I restarted my computer with my USB drive plugged in, but it booted to XP like normal. Is there a bios update that I can update my mobo too, so that it can boot to usb or is it just too old?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi bought a new mobo ram and video card for my comp. when i went to install it everything seemed to work fine until it tried to load windows, every time no matter what i did i seemed to get that blue screen as soon as windows tried to load and then it would automatically reset. i have tried a bunch of things and am stumped, im not sure if its a defective mobo that could be doing this, if anyone has any suggestions id greatly appreciate it.since i couldnt get it working i tried to hook up my old components back together for the mean time. but after everything was hooked up, when i went to hit the power button, the power would turn on momentarily and then shut off. the power supply should be fine since it worked on the new mobo fine, but also if you have any idea what that could be it would be of great help.

When it goes to load XP it gets NTLDR not found or something to that degree and says press ctrl+alt+del to restart. My hd has a partial install of xp and i havent been able do the full install. Was wondering how to do the full install now. I tried popping the xp cd in and it doesnt read it, it just gives me the NTLDR message and wont do anything.

I installed my brand new Creative sound card, I installed its software and drivers all fine and the PC restarted fine. Next creative wanted to update the drivers and I let it. After it was done installling the new drivers it needed a restart. On restart I could not even get to the post screen and was displayed with an error saying USB over current, PC shutdown in 20 seconds. At first i could not get past this error at all, so i tried taking out the sound card and putting inserting it again. I did not get the USB error now and was happy.
I played Battlefield 2142 for a few hours then shut it down. Now today when i get home from work and turn it on i saw that USB over current error again and got frusterated. After taking the sound card out and putting it back in I had some new problems. I only saw my Asus Splash screen saying "press delete to enter setup" although pressing delete did nothing, it just hung on that screen.

The reinstall worked fine but I cannot reinstall my Virgin Media Bradband service. Before the reinstall the bradband service was wrking fine..When I originall took out the bradband service it was through NTL. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? View 8 Replies View RelatedA possible client of mine has a system with three hard drives. He was not able to install the updates from Windows Update, so somehow, he installed the OS again on another hard drive and booted up with it (not sure how he did that), and it asked him to authenticate the software by buying a new key (the OS was already installed with the same disk and key on the C drive). When he rebooted, it booted from the orginal hard drive (drive C) and original installation of the OS, which was unable to install the Windows Updates. Basically, the OS on the C drive either needs to be repaired, or it needs to be reinstalled. And the drive that has the second instance of the OS needs to be wiped out and formatted.
The question is, if the repair does not fix it and the OS needs to be reinstalled, if the second instance of the OS is wiped out, will it still ask him to buy another key? My guess is no, since he will be reinstalling it, but I'm not sure if the second install triggered it so that any future installs, whether they are on the original system or not, will be asked to be authenticated.
I have a friend with an IE problem which I think may be corrected by reinstalling IE 6 but if she deinstalls it and has no browser how would she go about reinstalling it ? Can she still use her windows updates without a browser ? or will she have to do it from her XP cd? I do believe they will probably have a recovery cd because I think they bought a branded ( yuck) computer.
View 13 Replies View RelatedAlright, so I acquired a computer to use as my HTPC; the only issue is that it is an HP computer that has an OEM copy of XP Home installed, and it is full of crap and has so many corrupt files it makes my head hurt to simply think about. A fresh install is necessary, but I can't do it because I don't have the recovery cd. It has the product key plain as day on the side, so I only need the software to run it. I can get this via torrents, I'm sure, but the only one I've found so far is an OEM copy with SP3. I think the computer is about 5 years old, and I'm pretty sure only SP 1 was around at that time. Did Windows use the same algorithm for SP1-SP3? I.E. will my cd key work with this OEM SP3 cd? I don't want to uninstall everything and then be left with absolutely no OS.

Of the many problems I have, whenever I try to open an application I get a prompt to choose what application I want to use to open it. For example, if I try to open Word, it will paradoxically ask me what I want to use to open it. Sometimes choosing the same application from the list works, sometimes it doesn't. Of the numerous other problems I have, I can't open many critical files such as Control Panel. I've tried fixes such as System Restore but nothing works. I want to do a clean install of XP, but when I put the CD in my drive, the prompt screen loads but when I click on "install XP" simply nothing happens.
View 8 Replies View RelatedLong story short my comp got junked up with crap and spyware, and I decided that since i didn't have much important data on it that I would just do a completely fresh install of XP. I can't get my comp to get past the initial setup for XP (i created a streamlined verison with SP2, since,my XP pro version was very old). It will format my drive, and copy the initial setup files, but when it restarts it just reboots the cd and asks me if I want to install windows XP, and proceeds to format and setup files again. After about 6 tries im getting desperate and any help would be useful. I have read a number of XP reinstall guides, but i can't find any info pertaining to my specific problem.

(Code 19)Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.What I did was I just deleted some part of the registry related to the USB (HKLM Enum and Services parts) and didn't do some backup (Yeah I know.)thinking that maybe the controller will be installed automatically upon hardware change scan. Anybody can tell me how to fix this without reinstalling WinXP? Right-clicking to update driver in Device Manager doesn't work.
View 2 Replies View Relatedlast night i decided to format my pc, so i formated it and tried to reinstall vista, the reinstallation worked fine but then it said i had to have a old version of windows for me to activate, because its an upgrade version.i then formated AGAIN and tried to clean-install XP so i could then upgrade to my vista but during my reinstallation of xp it stopped working. this is where it may get confusing haha, after the first part of the xp install it restarts (the first part meaning where it formats and copys all the files to memory) but just after it restarts it comes up with the screen "press any key to boot to CD." i let it go because ur not ment to boot to cd after that, but on that same screen it comes up with a few different coloured boxes on the screen and it just hangs.
