View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't boot my Compaq laptop. I got sick of all the AOL stuff still hanging around that I tried to get rid of it all. I deleted it from add/remove from programs and also deleted the files from system files. I faced with a message which read "The AOL connectivity service isn't running. Please restart your computer and try again". At that point everything froze and I could just see the "torch" looking for files in the "My Computer" screen and nothing else happening. I have tried System Restore, also reverting to the last configuration which worked. Now I just get the desktop background with nothing on it.I can get in OK with secure mode. I have also tried scan disk and the repair defects options.

View 1 Replies View RelatedPc had win98 installed. With the pc came a support cd for my ASRock mobo. I installed the cd and installed 4 in 1 drivers, no problem. However it wrote over my existing drivers for my modem and graphic card. I read the manual and it read that this mobo was designed specifically for XP. So I formatted my hard drive and installed XP pro, without a hitch. However it did not detect my modem.
It detect everythig else There wasn't a list to chose from. I went to a web site and d/loaded proper driver from the info off my modem. The problem was I couldn't load to floppy cause the file was 2.44 mbs. So here's where the stupid in me comes to play. I removed the hard drive from my old pc and installed to my new one, but of course it did not boot, no screen, nadda. I reversed my screw up, and my pc still does not boot
My hard drive is divided into two partitions running Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional NT. Windows 2000 is currently causing problems in that mouse movement is delayed, and also the shutdown process is lengthy, followed by a blank blue screen, sometimes not shutting down at all.As I would prefer to make a clean install of XP Pro it would be great to get rid of the former operating systems. Can anyone advise on how to go about this?

I installed an AOpen DVD RW in my Dell Dimension 3000 last night, and I also installed the included Nero 7 software. I tried to watch a DVD that was done in Dolby surround and I had no audio. Nero Prompted me that I needed to install an upgrade which I proceeded to do. I managed to download and install those and the Codec Detective doesn't give me that message any more. It just lists all of the installed codecs.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI purchased a Dell Inspiron 531 about a year or so ago for my wife. It came with Vista pre-installed. Everything was fine except that my wife kept complaining about the speed compared to my pc running XP. So, I checked the web to see if uninstalling Vista would be a problem and mostly I found that it was doable. So, I downloaded the necessary nVidia drivers and I was off. I unistalled Vista, reformated the HD and reinstalled XP Home SP1a (a purchased copy) so everything went just fine, at least so I thought. I now get frequent shutdowns and reboots. Some programs will not install properly (such as MS Office 2003)- word will open sometimes and sometimes I get errors saying that the program could not open for various reasons. I use Avira anti-virus and it has problems updating.

We plan to reinstall Windows with a complete Windows XP Home Edition CD that we purchased separately. We also have another CD that came with the computer, but we're not sure if it is a complete Windows XP Home Edition installation CD. *NOTE* My mom is working with me on this, and she's more computer savvy than me.
