My "My Documents" directory grows folders all by itself. I don't store my stuff there and like to keep it empty for quicker access to my Windows Explorer aka File Manager. About once or twice a week I find a "My Music" or "My Pictures" has appeared there and I need to delete them. No big deal but I really hate evidence of M$ pushing its help upon me when I've indicated otherwise.

Even modified the directory as instructed to eliminate the search companion glich mentioned in the article. While the MS support provided the functionality I wanted, it does not help clear up all the problems it creates.
Now, when I launch Windows Explorer, in the left hand frame I have folders show, and in the right hand frame I have details shown. This is fine. When I double click a folder in the right hand frame, a new Windows Explorer launches, and the folders in the left hand frame are gone. I can click the folders icon at the top and turn them back on, but this did not use to happen. What I had and want back is for the folder to open in the same window, an leave the format of the Windows Explorer screen alone.
No matter what I do, when I change the properties of a single directory to either show or not show hidden files and folders, that property then changes in every single directory on the whole drive. I do not click on "Apply to All Folders", I just go to the directory of interest and change the button in Folder Options>View and press "OK". Is there a trick here? Basically I want some folders to show hidden folders, and others to not show them. Right now it's either all or nothing! Again, I am NOT pressing apply to all, which I know will apply all view settings to every folder.

But there are still 12 different links all over the computer to the various My Document folders and Owner/Nathan(my user name)/Shared/All Users folders and even some folders that change names based on their moods.So, is there any way to get rid of the excessive links and make it so there is only 1 set of folders located in something like c:/My Documents?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs of yesterday, I am no longer able to rename subfolders within the My Documents Folder. As suggested here I have tried right-click, and F2 but no luck. Ran Ad-Aware and SpyBot and system is free of spyware. The option is not available using the File menu. I know have been able to do this in the past using the above methods because I still see the folders I have created using right-click. When I select File>New, I can add a "new folder" but I cannot rename it. Any ideas and why is this happening all of sudden?

After getting the system back I discovered that my failed Vista boot drive was still mountable as a non-boot drive. I can get to most everything on the drive except I can't get to anything under the C:Documents and Settings directory. I get access denied messages.

I have built an new xp pro machine and upon first boot up, it created (among others) a My Documents folder. Then when I used the Files and Settings Transfer wizard, it moved my old My Documents folder from the old machine to the new one. Problem is, they have different names. I expect if I'd named them identically, there wouldn't be two of them. Each file I try to save defaults to the one from the old machine. My question is, can I safely
delete the other?
Just getting around to asking this I have a few 'My Document' folders' listed in Explorer. Under Desktop Under Documents & SettingsJay Between Mobile Devices and My Network Places They appear identical. Why do I need all these?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a registry problem, in that when I booted up my laptop, it said a hive file for the SOFTWARE key was damaged. I fixed this by going into recovery console and restoring the registry backup. So now Windows starts again and everything is good. All of my files are still in tact. However, my settings are all gone. Even though my files are on the hard drive, the appearance of everything is as if Windows has just been installed. In Documents and Settings, the reason is revealed.

What I mean is that I'm going to transfer all of my music (55 GB) on external HDD and then back to freshly installed Windows 7. And what I would like is that my order of folder is sorted as I did it in Win XP, and NOT by alphabetical order or something else. I am going to replace the hard drive, it's time for that anyway. I have the old hard drive connected to another computer as a second drive. I have a user's My Documents folder redirected to a share on our domain controller. The name of this user's My Documents folder is username's Documents. Whenever I try to change this to My Documents, it immediately reverts back to username's Documents.However, if I open a command window and say dir, I see My Documents which is what I would expect.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have lost all of my files within My Documents. All the folders remain, but all of the actual files are missing. No system changes have been made, nothing new was installed. I have run virus scans (I'm using SymantecAV Corporate) AdAware, Spybot S&D with nothing found.
They're still there somewhere, as the user folder properties show the correct size for the folder and number of documents, but not initially - right clicking on the folder to display properties shows a small number at first and then it gradually counts up. Properties for My Documents shows a small number of folders, all empty.
When I try to view documents in My Documents, I get the message that explorer must close down and sorry for the inconvenience. What could be causing this, and how can I cure it.
