A few months ago, I thought my reliable internal DVD writer was finally on its last legs. When I would play it, it would stutter, play a DVD disk slightly at less than normal speed, and the audio had a slight echo to it. So I bought a new one (an LG). After 4 months, it had the same problem. I replaced it. The new one has the same problem. My external DVD writer seems to work fine. So, rather than the writer, I think it might be a driver issue?
every so often on my friend's computer explorer.exe just stops working and the cpu goes up to 100% and everything takes for ever. the only way we have gotten it to quit is to restart the computer, but then it comes back later. does anyone have any ideas or solutions to the problem?
my system is XP Pro with two drives CD and DVD writer. My CD/DVD auto run suddenly stop working. It was working before last week. But now when i insert any CD or DVD in my drives, i won't get auto run prompt window anymore. Who can i make it work again?
i have msn messenger 7.5, but it seems like the 7.0 version is always running, although it isnt seen anywere on the system tray. whenever i log on to the 7.5 version, i get a message from the older version that i connected at another place. in addition, when the 7.5 version is off, keep getting all sorts of "user online" messeges from the older version
ive just noticed within the last couple days that my sreensaver isnt kicking in. i did install a new mouse this last week, bu ti dont think that would affect it. i wasnt quit sure what was meant by adding the ss to the front of the name, but the only name i could think of is that folder that the pictures are in. the screensaver has worked for years, so i cant think of why it would just stop working, and thats what lead me to believe that the installation of the mouse could have affected it.
Remote desktop on the XP Pro I have stopped working all of sudden.
*The Terminal Services service is started. * No errors in the event viewer * The two Remote Access checkboxes are checked in the Remote Tab of the System Control Panel * RDP-Tcp "Port Number" in the registry is set to 3389 * fDenyTSConnections in the registry is set to 0 * TSEnabled in the registry is set to 1
I am having such problems with my computer! I am sure that there are a million reasons why computers lock up, not blue screen of death, but rather just simply lock up. The screen stays on exactly what I am working on, but I can't do anything. The mouse is locked up, control alt delete doesn't work nothing works. It mostly happens while I am on the net, but sometimes happens in word also. I have checked RAM, heat and power supply and all of those things checked out fine. I added more RAM thinking that might be the problem but nop.
I was in the middle of checking over my term paper and the mouse started to have a delay and if I moved the cursor slightly it would jump all over the page. Then I tried to delete a word with the keyboard and nothing happened. I turned off the computer and unplugged and plugged the mouse and keyboard back in and when the start up screen came up on windows xp to log in my mouse didn't move at all. Could any one explain what is going on? I would greatly appreciate it. I got to get my paper off that computer.
I have a plain, blank screensaver enabled that is passworded. My roommates complain that when I leave and this screensaver becomes enabled, their internet stops working. We have cable internet and network through a simple router. My question is - is this really the case? Would my screensaver really cause their internet to slowdown/stop?? This is what they claim and it's beginning to get on my nerves.
After I installed a usb 2.0 card and triple my memory size. my monitor after about an hour stop working. I tried everything (or almost everything that I know). I reseat the battery on the motherboarb, disconnect and reconnect almost every wire, use different monitors` that I know works, still their is no signal going to my monitor when I boot.
I was cleaning up my registry the other night using CCleaner and Easy Cleaner. Now my Short Cuts to file folders do not work any more. When I double click on them, I get the hour glass for a few seconds then nothing. Short cuts to program files and internet pages work fine. I have tried to delete and recreate the folder short cuts but still no work. System restore (for some reason) will not let me go back to before the Reg cleaning.

Multiple computers blue screen on him lately. the 4th BSoD-laden computer, but it's got me and the Sys Admin pretty stumped, so maybe I can find an answer here. The computer is a CSI brand with AMD Athlon XP proc & Windows XP. The problem hdd is a WD 400, and we also have another working WD 400 in another computer that I'll mention later. Both have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and were originally in separate computers (each was the only harddrive in its comp originally.
Trying to start a computer with the problem WD 400 alone results in a blue screen error right after the windows screen (if I remember correctly...it's not long after the hdd, etc is recognized anyways), and gives the STOP error 0x00000024, and mentions some problems with the NTFS. I found that the ..24 STOP error has to do with the NTFS.sys file, but that doesn't help me much. The computer does not let me do anything after this BSoD error, and upon restart, I just get the same error, no matter which Safe/etc mode I try...it doesnt load into any of the modes.
I had a warning from kaspersky saying it had found and deleted a tojan.Ok, so it was gone, but since my keyboard and mouse just stop working when they feel like it. the strange thing though is the mouse will still move around (just wont make any tooltips appear or click on anything) and the keyboard wont type yet the shortcuts will still work for eg ctrl+alt+del, the windows logo key and ctrl+shift+esc are the ones i tried so far and they all work, and bring the correct things up
After using my xp-home computer for a while, it gets tired and stops working correctly. It usually happens after playing games, or just being on it for ages. you can't connect to the internet, when you log off the xp-pro log-off stuff comes up and when you try to open the task-manager via ctrl alt del. you get an error message: application failed to initialise properly (0xc0000017).
When i turned it on today, he got a message saying "New CPU Installed!" But, i am 100% sure did not install anything the previous day. did nothing at this screen, but simply reset his computer, and this time, it skipped this screen but a computerized voice said something like "------ inaccessible" , it is too garbled to hear. After this i can access computer normally, except for one thing. mouse and keyboard stop and start working at regular intervals
I have a new xp64 machine, and when I'm away from my machine for 10 mins, I have to re-enter my password to continue working. How can I stop this auto-logout?

I am trying to fix a friends computer my usual story. Once it gets to the user screen for user selection both keyboard and mouse stop working, its either they stop working or the computer freezes, i am not sure. Life still goes to the mouse as it still lights. The keyboad works fine in the bios but not at freezing point.
Major virus infection on computer resulted in fdisk and reformat. I used Win 98SE to fdisk and reformat, as I couldn't for the life of me find a format on the Dell Operating reinstallation CD. (could be first mistake)
Used Win 98 SE startup diskette to start system w/CD rom support.
Navigated to D: Drive which containe the XP OS reinstallation. Navigated to I386 folder and typed WINNT to begin reinstalling files.
Start WIn XP setup and began copying files to HD.
Screen shows: The MS-DOS based portion of setup is complete. Setup will now restart you computer. After your computer restarts, WIN XP Setup will continue. Remove floppy, etc.
Computer restarts - did inspection of system, shows Win XP Setup, loading files (drivers, controllers, etc.)
Starting windows - Welcom to Setup: 1. Setup - press enter 2. Repair (using Repair Console) 3. Quite - F3
Pressed enter
Next message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer. This may involve running a mfg supplied diagnostics or setup program.
Setup cannot continue Press F3
System then attempts reboot, attempts installation again by booting from HD. Then error message:
Dell Deminsion 4600 series p4 processor @2.4 GHz 512 MD DDR SDRAM @ 400 MHz 128 MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card 80GB 7200 RMP Ultra ATA HD Win XP Pro SP1 48x/24x/48x CD-RW Drive SoundBlaster Live! w/ 5.1 support
I have looked on MS site for the error code and think I understand that the problem is either a hd controller device driver is not installing from the Dell Reinstallation CD and therefore stops the installation of the software. How I can possibly extract and install the driver setup may be looking for.
the computer is a SolidPPC50 515 Model, which has no internal CD-ROM or Floppy drive. I have an external USB CD-ROM and Floppy, but there are only 2 USB ports, and no PS/2 keyboard slot, so I've had to use a USB keyboard. Despite the BIOS being compatible with booting through USB, it doesn't recognise the CD-ROM, but it does recognise the Floppy. I tried using a bootable floppy with the I386 folder from the install CD copied to the Hard Drive (formatted as FAT32), but when I run WINNT.exe then try to change over the Floppy drive for the CD-ROM, it can't find the CD-ROM drive.
When I try to install SP3, after it has downloaded through Auto-update, it gives me internal error, without any codes or anything. Just says installation did not complete.
Running XP Professional SP3. I am curious why Windows does not recognize an internal DVD ROM as a DVD? It sees it under My Computer as a CD Drive. But, if you put a DVD disc in the drive, then it sees it as a DVD..... THE DVD ROM is an LG Model GH22NP20.
I just installed an internal sata dvd-r/-rw/+r/+rw drive ( F: ) and it is being recognized as a removable drive. The unplug/eject hardware icon shows up in the system tray. Never installed a SATA drive before so I don't know if this is normal for an internal sata dvd drive??
In the BIOS I set SATA=IDE. Only other option is Raid which I assume would be for a SATA HDD.
I've been trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my dell c400 notebook which does not have an internal cd drive. Thus far I've tried to pre-load the installation files on the hard drive and boot from them, use windows PE to install off a network cd drive, and install off an external usb cd drive
