Cant Get Rid Of User Selection Welcome Screen

Dec 20, 2005

I recently fixed my parents computer and while I was at it I upgraded their OS from Windows Me to Windows XP Home Edition (no service pack). After I did I got the User Selection Welcome Screen at start-up asking me to select the account I want to use (even though theres only one to choose!). This happened to me on my own computer when I upgraded XP Pro so I thought I knew what to do to get rid of it. I went to Kellys Korner (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm) and used the Add ControlUserPasswords2 To Control Panel registry addon to get the User Accounts 2 icon.

Keyboard And Mouse Just Stop Working On Stsrtup

Nov 17, 2009

I was in the middle of checking over my term paper and the mouse started to have a delay and if I moved the cursor slightly it would jump all over the page. Then I tried to delete a word with the keyboard and nothing happened. I turned off the computer and unplugged and plugged the mouse and keyboard back in and when the start up screen came up on windows xp to log in my mouse didn't move at all. Could any one explain what is going on? I would greatly appreciate it. I got to get my paper off that computer.

User Account Selection At Startup

Jul 20, 2010

When I used to boot up it went straight through to the desktop, ready to use with no intervention from me. I just had my hard drive reformatted and am pleased with the results but now I have to select a user account before it continues to boot. There is only one user account, which makes this futile. Can I bypass this? There must be a setting somewhere.

Can't Get Past The User Selection Page - Uninstalled Norton

Sep 15, 2005

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 desktop. Until last night, I was having trouble doing anything on my computer. After start up, my outdated version of Norton would pop up saying a virus was found. I couldn't get anything else to respond and the window would never go away. So I eventually got it to stop, and the I ran various spyware, registry, and anti-virus utilities to the point where my computer was working flawlessly.

Then I decided that I would just uninstall Norton (since I installed a new anti-virus program). I hadn't updated it in over a year and I never really liked it anyway. It took over an hour to remove (I think because the quarantine folder was so large). I chose to remove everything including the quarantine folder. After the uninstall successfully completed, I restarted the computer. I got to the Windows XP user selection screen (I have 5 users set up) and tried to select my user profile, but I couldn't click on it.

User Administrator - User Login Screen

Aug 30, 2005

In recently restoring my crashed machine, I noticed that when the machine was
idle, it would go back to the user login screen. I found this tedious as I
just wanted it to go to screen saver but stay within the user session. I ran
'control userpasswords2' and de-clicked 'Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer.' (It's a home computer so not worried). Now
when I reboot, it brings up a Windows login for Administrator and says,
"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction." I can bypass that
and log in as Owner or anybody else so it's more cosmetic than anything else.Question - who is this "Administrator?" The account doesn't show up under
User Accounts. 'Owner' is the Administrator. Do I care about this account
(which appears to be hidden? Should I allow it to log in under the covers? If
so, do I have to re-click 'Users must enter a user name and password, etc."

Mouse And Keyboard Are Not Working

Jul 5, 2006

A buddy of mine is having problems with his PC. He said when he turns it on it seems to boot up fine (lights on case work) but his screen, mouse and keyboard are not working. Now Im assuming that all those burning out at the same time is next to impossible. I think it might have to do with the PC itself. I have yet to try a different screen and such just to make sure. Also if infact trying another screen fails i obviously will not be able to look in his bios, which leaves me kinda stumped.

Keyboard And Mouse Not Working Because Of Any Virus

Mar 8, 2008

I am having issues with my keyboard and mouse(hence the title). My keyboard works fine while in the bios and while booting, but once the Windows Bar stops going from side to side and I start to see my desktop load, the screen is in 640x480 resolution or something (like safe mode) and I can't use my keyboard or my mouse, even though the lights on both are lit(so they have power). Earlier, I was having problems with my hal.dll (long story, but I ended replacing it from my MCE OEM CD in the recovery console((which I have in my MBR Boot menu)), and now I am here). I think that that might be the contributing issue here, but I have no clue what to do next. The same thing happens when I enter safe mode. I would just boot from my XP DVD and do a repair, but DELL gave me a DVD-ROM OEM disk with my XPS 600 even though the only drive I can boot from is my CD-RW DRIVE as far as I know. I have checked my boot order in my bios. I can boot from USB or Onboard or Removable Hard drives and Cd Drives.

At first the boot was failing, made some hardware changes and all was good seemingly... now the keyboard and mouse no longer work, but they work when the computer just starts up. They just stop working shortly after. I plugged in a USB mouse and that works, so I was thinking it may be a problem with the PS/2 ports.

Arrow Keys Could Move User Selection Up & Down / No Alphanumeric Keys

Oct 9, 2008

My Norton AntiVirus just upgraded from v2008 to v2009.Several weirdnesses ensued:
1. At the Windows Welcome screen, arrow keys could move the user selection up & down, but no alphanumeric keys made any visible entry (dot) in password field. Clicking Shut Down and restarting corrected this (for now, anyway).
2. The [Start] > [Log Off] > [Switch Users] button is missing. This would be a straightforward fix, except that
3. In Control Panel, User Accounts lacks "Change the way users log on or off"! [Is XP SP3's REAL purpose to hose up a nicely-running XP SP2 box, so the owner will FINALLY spring for a Vista system?]
4. Clicking any of the "Learn About." links opens the help page in IE7, but with its contents crowded to the left and the yellow bar at the top. Clicking to allow blocked content (Are you sure? YES!) results in yet another dialog about an ActiveX control that "might be unsafe" but the only new ActiveX control on this PC is one from Symantec, installed during the NAV 2009 upgrade. NAV 2009 was the FIRST product I've run into that did NOT permit its EULA to be selected, printed or saved. I like to keep a record of things I've agreed to, but that text was out of reach! Sixteen screenshots later.

Mouse Scroll Not Working - Keyboard Missing Letters

Oct 31, 2009

My mouse and keyboard has both started to behave strange.
1.The mouse scroll wheel works sometimes when surfing on internet , but most of the time it does not. It works fine when typing in Word.
2.The mouse pointer jumps around randomly.
3.The left mouse button sometimes behaves as if it is the right button.
4.Sometimes the computer seems to freeze and will not respond to mouse commands. This can be “reset” by ctrl+alt+delete, and choosing “switch to” the program I was working in. This can happen even when only one program is running.
5.Sometimes the mouse seems to left-click and drag by itself.
6.The keyboard sometimes misses letters that I press

Computer Wont Shutdown / Keyboard Mouse Not Working?

Jul 23, 2005

My first problem is that I can't shutdown my computer. I mean I can shut down the operating system, but the fan still runs. This seems to have come up within the last several weeks after I unplugged it once by accident. It wouldn't restart so I had to hit the reset button. I'd never previously used one, but thats what people suggested in other places when it wouldn't restart, just hit the reset button. So I did. Now I'm stuck with it not turning off. My second problem may be a direct result of the first. The last few days my keyboard and sometimes my mouse stop working.
