Made A Partition, Made It Active, Copied C: To It But Can't Boot

Aug 14, 2009

I have a 1terrabyte drive and I want to get my two older drives out of the tower. I made some partitions, I copied the c: drive contents to r: and I made r: active. But it won't boot when I romove c: as it doesn't see netdlr. Or is it netldr? LOL. At any rate, maybe part of the problem is that r: is now r:c:windows and not r:windows. But it took forever to copy this drive to r: and I don't want to do it again.I am using Cobian backup by the way.

Had Vista Made Partition For SP2 / Something Screwed Up

Mar 9, 2008

About 4 months ago I tried to make a partition on my HD to install XP SP2 on it, while running Vista Business, which I installed on the laptop (it originally had XP), but something screwed up while making the partition and Vista was erased from my laptop and XP was installed on both partitions. When I turn on my laptop a boot screen comes on to choose which partition to boot up. I've always chosen the larger partition, I've never tried booting the other partition, I'm scared it will screw something up. All of my files are on the bigger partition, the one I always use. But I want to know how to delete the other partition so that there is only one partition and I can use the space on the partition I don't use at all. I want to do this without deleting my files if possible.

SP2 Made My Display Blurry

Ive reinstalled the monitors drivers (I downloaded a new copy even though it was the same version, so I know my driver install wasnt corrupt. I have half a mind already to uninstall SP2

I downloaded an msstyles theme for a recent XP install on my new HD. Unfortunately, the theme made everything black, except a few icons. I can't see anything in order to change it back. Fortunately, I still have a version of XP on my old HD and changed the boot order. The new HD with the screwed up theme is accessible in Windows explorer. How do I change the theme on that copy of Windows back to normal?

Stupidly Made Change To Computer Name - Can Recover It

May 8, 2008

This is a work laptop that I bring home .The computer is normally "registered" on the work domain, but I was doing a VPN-related test for something else where I thought I needed to be off the network (complicated to explain but not related to my current problem.

What I did specifically was:

1 - Right click on the My Computer icon to get to the Computer Name tab.
2 - unclicked the domain button and clicked the workgroup button for group HOME (this required me to "login" with my work username/password
3 - got the message that I had to restart to take effect, which I did.

Save The Changes - Made To Text Strings In The Registry

Dec 17, 2004

I have Windows XP home w/SP2 and I am buffaloed. I thought I was a knowledgable user, but I have been trying to stop a program from autorunning. I have deleted the value in the registry under the "RUN" key of H_KEY LOCAL_MACHINE, and CURRENT-USER, then I exit, and as soon as I open regedit again, the values are back like they were, ignoring my deletion. How do I save the changes I make to text strings in the XP registry?
I have administrator priveleges.I miss Windows 3.1, where you only had sys.ini and win.ini to fool with, and when you changed something it stayed changed.

one my user profiles was set to 'Keep files Private' in XP Pro SP2 (workgroup, not domain). The windows installation has gone pear shaped. I am trying to get those users file/folders off the hard disk by connecting it up as a slave. I can see the contents of the disk fine but get 'Access Denied' (as you would do) when trying to access that particualr user profiles.Tried running recovery console, windows install repair, but think its messed up completed, I can however browse the disk from another PC, hence my question - BTW can't take ownership of file as PC I am trying from is not a member of a domain (although I could maybe try on one - would this work?)

Deleted Active Partition - Eek

Apr 21, 2008

Ok, to start out, I know I am an idiot...I am a little too advanced a user to do something like this.Anyway, I have a 70 G IDE hard drive that originally had no partitions, loaded with XP. My buddy helped me to make a new partition (with Partition Magic) to re-install a new copy of XP as the old one was running pretty slow and had a bunch of crap on there. So then I had a dual boot system, and everything was grand. Then, after I yanked all the stuff I wanted off the original installation of XP, which was drive c:, I deleted it (Partition Magic again). My buddy had told me to re-format it, not delete it.

Win 2000 Pro Boot.ini On Dos Partition Rather Than OS Partition

Jan 31, 2007

I reinstalled my OS several months ago, and decided that I might want a dual boot in the future. I already had an old, smaller drive in the machine that's labeled the c: drive.
Reading one time that for security purposes it's good to have your OS on a drive other than C:, I decided to not alter the drive lettering.

I then partitioned a new internal hard drive into several logical drives. I formatted the D: partition as a Dos fat32 partition and the rest as NFTS partitions. Somehow, I allowed the D: partition to be the primary partition, while the E: partition which contains the Win 2000 Pro OS Winnt directory is a logical drive.

When I just checked disk management, I noticed that not only is boot.ini on the D: Dos partition, but so is ntldr along with the following Dos setup files:

ndetect.com
arcsetup.exe
arcldr.exe

Mark C: Active Xp Move Boot Stuff To It

Feb 9, 2010

C: has windows on it an is marked "boot". A partition G: on that same physical drive is marked "system" and has the three files ntltr; boot.ini; and NTDETECT.COM. This is the only two partitions on that physicl drive. I have sucessfully moved the 3 files to a floppy A: drive and can boot from the a: drive. I also have them on the C: drive as well. I would like to boot from these 3 files on the C: drive so that the D: drive can be cleaned out. And all of windows stuff is on the c: drive where it belongs. I did disk management and can not set the partition C: "Boot" marked drive and the Partitioned G: "System" marked drive to active or anything. It does not show on the drop menu for the C: drive and it is greyed out on the drop down menu G: drive. I cant even change the drive letters of the G: drive.

How To Recover Deleted Grub / Boot Partition (Dual Boot System)

Oct 24, 2009

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

Removing Dual Boot Setup - Boot Partition

Dec 9, 2005

I have a system which was initially set up a while ago as a dual boot, Win98SE/Win2K. I had a need for the Win98SE side of things then, but now that has gone but the Win98SE partition is the boot of course.I want to be able to do away with the Win98SE partition completely and ideally add the space to the Win2K one, maybe leave it as a clean NTFS partition if that makes things easier. This would mean that I would end up with a drive with a single boot partition holding Win2K. This of course is not a trivial process as the drive letter of the boot partition will need to change. (I do want that drive letter change incidentally).

when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. However when I try to copy a 12.4GB file from my system to the external HD, XP tells me there is not enough room and that I should delete files beore trying again. There is plenty of room on th external HD and XP has got it wrong. The weird thing is that when I right click on the external drive's icon and view it's properties, XP tells me there is 230GB free.
