C: has windows on it an is marked "boot". A partition G: on that same physical drive is marked "system" and has the three files ntltr; boot.ini; and NTDETECT.COM. This is the only two partitions on that physicl drive. I have sucessfully moved the 3 files to a floppy A: drive and can boot from the a: drive. I also have them on the C: drive as well. I would like to boot from these 3 files on the C: drive so that the D: drive can be cleaned out. And all of windows stuff is on the c: drive where it belongs. I did disk management and can not set the partition C: "Boot" marked drive and the Partitioned G: "System" marked drive to active or anything. It does not show on the drop menu for the C: drive and it is greyed out on the drop down menu G: drive. I cant even change the drive letters of the G: drive.
I would like to delete all user accounts except one but before I do how can I move some of those user files over to the user I will keep without them being moved as shortcuts? I would like to create copies not shortcuts.
I've got Windows XP Pro, SP2. Say your mouse quit working. Isn't there a way to move around and select stuff with the keyboard? I've looked in "Help" but I must not have known how to phrase it because I could find nothing. Could somebody please tell me where to look?
I been using my PC for a few years now & it's been fine ever since, but now every time I start my PC every application transforms into a different font/style before going back to normal. My system is a XP Home SP2 & I'm using Firefox as my browser. The last month I have been going through spyware/malware cleaners, used everyone one of them including Hijack This. The problem does not seem to be spyware.Now the problem all started when I clicked on some website when I was searching for an old obscure foreign band, at that moment my browser turned into a completely different style for a second.
recently i downloaded a file that was supposed to be an mp3. however, when i tried playing it nothing happened. when i right click to choose delete the options are completely different. all options i am given are options in winamp. i also tried removing it with move on boot and it tells me that the file is not found. not really sure what to do from here im pretty stuck.
I'm building a replacement PC and would like to boot off my original XP Home edition HDD. Its an E-Machines OEM version of XP home, is this possible as I only have the CD that came from E-Machines with the PC? Do I need a repar CD? If so where can I get one? I really don't want to loose all my settings.
I used Win98SE before installing WinXP Pro about a year ago. I have 2 internal hard drives and am running a dual boot with 98SE on the C drive and the K drive has the XP Pro. C drive was partitioned at the outset of dual booting and has drives E through H. Drive K which has XP Pro is beginning to fill and in fact, I currently have only 4 gigs available for use. Now the question: can I move some of the unused gigs in drives G and H to the K drive?? Oh, 98SE is FAT32 and Pro has NTFS formatting. If the answer is yes then, of course, I will need to know how. And as usual, TIA.
I'm having trouble when I enter my BIOS. It seems that once I enter, I can't move up or down or do anything at all. At first, I thought it migt be my keyboard, but I switched my keyboard with the keyboard from my other computer. It still had the same problem. I don't know why my BIOS won't let me do anything. Can anyone please help? I just want to change the boot sequence so I can wipe my drive
I have a 1terrabyte drive and I want to get my two older drives out of the tower. I made some partitions, I copied the c: drive contents to r: and I made r: active. But it won't boot when I romove c: as it doesn't see netdlr. Or is it netldr? LOL. At any rate, maybe part of the problem is that r: is now r:c:windows and not r:windows. But it took forever to copy this drive to r: and I don't want to do it again.I am using Cobian backup by the way.
My keyboard won't type. I have to hold the letter down until my tower clicks twice then the letter types. I thought it was keyboard, got new one, still not working

I am trying to open my active desktop, but I get a message that says IE cannot locate my active desktop html file. I need to find out how to fix this problem.
On some websites I get an error message which shows up in the status bar.it is an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle. When this happens, I can't access the website. I have tried several suggestions from Microsoft, but I just seem to trade one problem for another. This first showed up when I "upgraded" to SP2.
I had to reformat my hard drive, under the device manager the Ethernet controller has a yellow question mark, now my DSL would not connect, also I thought should be network setting under that, didn't see any. I reformated the hdd on my notebook and reinstalled XP. I tried to play media player but it did not detect the sound card, it said:error id = 0x80040256 remedy id = 0x00000000 I went into device manager and in 'other devices' there was a yellow question mark and then all those devices (ethernet, multimedia, pci, sm bus control, serial bus control, video control) had yellow question marks next to them.
I just did a complete reinstall of my win XP pro O.S. Computer is working fine. Only one minor problem, I have a yellow question mark in Device Manager under Other devices, Ethernet Controller. Under Network Adapters, I have my USB Cable Modem. Also, under start/control panel/network connections/local area connections - USB Cable Modem. In the past, when I did a complete reinstall of the O.S., I have installed the Broadcom 4401 Integrated NIC driver that came with my Dell resource CD. I would not have a yellow question mark. But then when I installed the USB Cable Modem, I would then disable the Broadcom, since I didnt need it anyway. At this stage I would not have any yellow question marks. This time, since I wasnt using the Broadcom, I did not install it and only installed the USB cable modem. But now I have the yellow question mark. Since the computer is working fine, do I just ignore this yellow question mark issue or is there another workaround. Dell Dimension model 2350.
I have a Dell 4600 running XP Home and all my USB ports have suddenly stopped working. When I go to the device manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, each of the Intel(R) 8280 1EB VBB Universal Host Controller has a yellow exclamation mark beside them. When I check their status this is the message: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19). I was not in the registry prior to this, so I don't know how it got damaged I tried this: Click Uninstall, and then click Scan for hardware changes to load a usable driver ? no effect.
I tried this: Restart the computer in Safe Mode, and then select Last Known Good Configuration,which rolls back to the most recent successful registry configuration ? didn't fix the problem. Microsoft says that as a last resort, you can edit the registry directly ? but I not sure where and what to edit in the registry. If anyone can tell me what keys to edit in the registry I would very appreciative. I will do anything to avoid reinstall windows from scratch. I unfortuately didn't have system restore going so I cannot use that.
i am trying to delete the temp files in the windows/temp directory but they won't delete. It says a program is using them but even when i try and get rid of them in safe mode they won't delete, how can i get rid of them? Also when i try to run a panda online virus scan i click on the scan my computer icon and it does nothing but there is a little yellow exclamation mark on the bottom left of the window, is that why it isn't doing anything and if so, how can i fix it?
I have two DVD drives connected to an XP desktop computer, however, they do not work. They appear in Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM drives with a yellow shreik/exclamation mark preceding the listing The devices are also recognized in the BIOS setup. When I click on the device in Device Manager, I get the message"Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)". One of the devices previously worked correctly. In fact, I completed a clean install of XP using it. Just what does the error message mean Does it mean that the devices are faulty & need to be replaced
Every Time that I reboot I get an icon in the system tray, the icon is of a red sphere containing a white exclamation mark. I have run both a virus scan and spyware scan using CA eTrust anitivirus and Windows Defender but with no result shown.
I just noticed two new icons on my desk top. One is On Line Security which has a blue sheild with this mark in the middle of it ! the other one has a green sheild with a check mark in the middle of it and is called Security trouble shooter. how they got their and what they are? PC Keeps crashing and stuff when it is left alone even for 5 minutes.Sometimes does it when I have several applications running and also during gameplay. It never used to do this. I also have recently installed 2 adventure games, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung Software.
It all started with my Firefox randomly crashing when it felt was necessary. now i just tried using my windows media player and got the message "wmp is not installed properly and must be reinstalled - do you want to go to the site and download it". and when i restarted after i thought WMP just closed incorrectly the last time, i had the windows XP theme loaded (i use, and prefer the classic look). ps. my WMP is still fungooed. posting a HJT log.
I installed windows the other day and it wiped everything off the puter, is there any way to get it back?i had photos that i cannot get back and music etc, even some of my projects?
