I use earthlink DSL and the offered a clean up system for free (PC finetune) so I tried it because my computer was a little slow. Well, after installing and rebooting up dates came up. I let in automatically install updates. I know 'stupid'. I now have it set to notify me before installing. Anyway, one of the updates was some version on windows explorer. It is always attempting to Install. It doesn't say what what it is installing. I look on the internet and one told me how to find out what it is attempting to install. It came back as "3.1.400.5512" I'm think that is internet explorer 3.1 not sure. It slows my computer, won't let me go online because it interfers with the sign on window pop up.

The computer uses XP home and is set for automatic updates.Every time I switch off it says it is installing update 1 of 1 even if I have not been connected to the net. When I tried using manual update I was told that the installation of <Windows Installer 3.1> had failed. Is the computer trying to install this same thing every time?If it is how do I get it to install properly or remove it from the list of programs ready to be installed?I think that when I installed the drivers for the motherboard this installer, or an earlier version, was installed by the Intel download.

My e-mail programme is a fully registered version of Incredimail. I recently installed the MacAfee 8.0.0 anti virus programme. Immediately thereafter I was unable to send any e-mails, although recieving any, presents no problem. Disabling MacAfee enables me to send as normal but leaves the computer unprotected whilst doing so. I have no problems sending mail via Yahoo, Netscape, Outlook Express, Opera or any other webmail I would imagine.Does this indicate that MacAfee is finding the Incredimail outgoing e-mail to be suspect and therefore blocking it? If this be the case I would be most grateful if anyone could proffer any comment and even more grateful should a solution be forthcoming

I recently had a server meltdown and had to replace the server (Windows Server 2003). Now several of my network computers (Windows XP Pro) are trying to synchronize offline files to the old server that had a different name. Everytime my students log off of the computers, they get the message that the offline file was unable to connect. The network path not found. I have tried changing settings in the synchronize from the accessories, but have had very little success. It may help for a short time, but usually the problem resurfaces. How can I tell these computers to stop trying to synchronize the files?

I did an in-place repair of XP MCE 2003. I had previously installed all MS security fixes and updates, the list in my "installed programs" showed about 70 or 80 updates. The in-place repair gave me an unscrambled registry, and an unpatched XP install, without touching my installed programs or data. A good thing, overall, it fixed my major problem.
I immediately went to get all the updates -- 76 of them downloaded. I don't let Updater install automatically -- I get all the updates, but decide which to install because I got a bad version of IE7 that took me a long time to delete and recover from, but I installed ALL security updates. I generally use FireFox, so I didn't view IE7 as a security update. Anyway, it installed one or two updates, and then said the rest could not be installed....

To start, when I try to play an .avi file, real player and windows media player both encounter a fatal error. Thinking there may have been a windows update I went to update.microsoft.com to get updates. I was able to download all of the updates, but I could not install any of them. I tried to install them via express and custom updates on the website, via automatic updates, and virtually every other method I could think of. After researching the problem I came across similar problems with an array of solutions, including trying in safe mode, running sfc /scannow, uninstalling and reinstalling .net, shutting off and turning back on both automatic updates and cryptographic services, changing .dll files (lccwiz & pidgen), renaming the Software Distribution folder, downloading one update at a time, and other things that I can't even begin to think of at this moment, obviously with no success, as well as running SpyBot, AdAware, and Norton.

My computer is only about 4 months old and I do not have it set to receive automatic updates. It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? The last time I checked to see what updates were available it appeared Microsoft even said that some of them could create problems.

Major virus infection on computer resulted in fdisk and reformat. I used Win 98SE to fdisk and reformat, as I couldn't for the life of me find a format on the Dell Operating reinstallation CD. (could be first mistake)
Used Win 98 SE startup diskette to start system w/CD rom support.
Navigated to D: Drive which containe the XP OS reinstallation. Navigated to I386 folder and typed WINNT to begin reinstalling files.
Start WIn XP setup and began copying files to HD.
Screen shows: The MS-DOS based portion of setup is complete. Setup will now restart you computer. After your computer restarts, WIN XP Setup will continue. Remove floppy, etc.
Computer restarts - did inspection of system, shows Win XP Setup, loading files (drivers, controllers, etc.)
Starting windows - Welcom to Setup:
1. Setup - press enter
2. Repair (using Repair Console)
3. Quite - F3
Pressed enter
Next message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer. This may involve running a mfg supplied diagnostics or setup program.
Setup cannot continue Press F3
System then attempts reboot, attempts installation again by booting from HD. Then error message:
Stop error:
Stop: 0x0000007b
(0xf7cb063c, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
At this point I must shut off the PC.
System:
Dell Deminsion 4600 series p4 processor @2.4 GHz
512 MD DDR SDRAM @ 400 MHz
128 MB DDR NVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card
80GB 7200 RMP Ultra ATA HD
Win XP Pro SP1
48x/24x/48x CD-RW Drive
SoundBlaster Live! w/ 5.1 support
I have looked on MS site for the error code and think I understand that the problem is either a hd controller device driver is not installing from the Dell Reinstallation CD and therefore stops the installation of the software. How I can possibly extract and install the driver setup may be looking for.

Use Windows Update to find driver updates In Windows Update click Custom Install in the main column, and then click Select optional hardware updates in the left-hand column. Windows Update examines all parts of your system to determine what needs updating and it may recommend more than just driver updates. It's a good idea to visit Windows Update regularly for driver updates and other non-critical updates.

I have a home built pc with an Asus P5Q-E motherboard, E4600 cpu, 4g's ram and a WD 640g hard drive. The HD is brand new as of 1 week ago.
I formatted all partitions to NTFS.
Partitions are C-49g, E-244g and F-303g.
I've separated the software programs from system software. I had not done this before, but it has no bearing on my problem.
OS is XP Pro w/SP3 and all updates and patches that were needed have been installed.
Had a problem initially with installing updates but fixed the installer with a method found on the MS Help and Support site.
Hard drive is thrashing around constantly. The HD light is blinking around 1 per second during idle times.
When at idle Task manager shows 99% cpu idling.
No activity shows up anywhere including I/O read and writes.
I already turned off Indexing Service.
I tweaked according to the suggestiosn at Blackviper's site and also used Harden-it for a bit more security.
Nothing I have done has helped with the thrashing.
I'm a novice and really don't have a clue of how to fix this.
I read of someone else w/the same problem. He unplugged his Optical SATA drive and the thrashing stopped. I tried that and the flashing light slowed down then stopped but the system was slow and unstable. I re-connected the drive and the pc works ok except for the thrashing.
The person who first tried this never posted again.
I Googled this for a while and have found that this is not specific to my hardware. Seems to be an XP problem.

My wrist is getting sore by this doubling or tripling of mouse-clicks to get rid of the pop-up's that has the audacity to steal focus constantly. Make my day and tell me how I get rid if it.

Computer was was suffering from a corrupted NTFS.sys file. (see http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...ml#post3285980)
and I didn't have the recovery disk from when I got the OS, so I used Elvandril's recovery disk thing to fix it. After I did this, XP started to load, but then it goes to a blue screen that says "***STOP: 0x00000071 (0x0000000, 0x0000000, 0x0000000, 0x0000000)
SESSION_INITIALIZATION _FAILED
If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps:
check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. if this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows XP updates you need.
If problems continue disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. disable bios memory option such as cacheing or shadowing. if you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your computer and press f8 to select advanced startup."
I'm running XP Pro SP2, and when I tried booting up in Safe Mode, it still came to this screen.I wasn't able to backup my Hard drive,
solve this without having to reformat my Hard Drive?
