View 7 RepliesI am having a great deal of trouble installing Windows XPon an Acer laptop. I have added the query below, and would be very grateful if anybody could suggest a solution.
"Acer laptop model Aspire 5101, supplied with Vista Home Premium.
Hard disk is apparently split into three partitions C, D and (hidden) small F according to Partition Manager.
I have formatted the drive and tried to load Window XP Home with Service Pack 2, but willnot continue installation.
-approx 75 % complete - as (quote) "cannot find file".
What purpose does hidden partition serve? Any information please on how to achieve full instal of XP?"
I just bought a new gatway laptop M460, When I go to install some programs, like any of my games, it tells me i do not have administrator privlages. although I am logged on under the administrator account. Also I try to create a limited account and it will not let me do that eather. some one in an microsoft class told me the sids were not right? if so how do you fix this? it has XP professional a 40 gig, and a gig a ram.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am quite familiar with desktop hardware and some software issues, so this is quite a conundrum for me. My knowledge is usually regarding older desktops and OS Systems (stuff not using firewire, but IDE, for example)
1) Introduction: Basically, I purchased a newly refurbished laptop HP Compaq NX7400 on Friday. I had them deliver it with no software as it reduced its price and I don?t like vista yet. When I went to install an OS (XP PRO SP1) it gave me an error message as follows: Setup did not find any HDD installed in your computer.
Make sure any HDD are powered on and properly connected to your computer and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. etup can not continue. To quit setup press F3?
2) attempts to fix:
A) I formatted and partitioned my hard drive using Western Digital?s Data Life Guard (DLG) it was an 80 GB hard drive. Okay so there is one there. But the odd thing was that it was registered as a BIOS hard drive? I am not sure on this?....
My bud purchased a laptop at one of those "liquidation sales'" a week ago and its a nice laptop, person who sold it was legit and it booted up and all was fine. It currently has w2k pro on it and I am going to put XP Pro on it. Here is the problems. BTW this is an IBM Thinkpad. The machine only has a cd-rom bay and I tried to install xp pro via the cd-rom drive and no dice. Upon the boot I hit F12 to choose boot sequence and I choose cd-rom and it just goes to the w2k start up screen. My XP cd is a retail version. So I then decided I would have to access the bios to make it boot by default to the cd-rom, well the bios are password protected. So no dice there also.So I actually went to do the install via w2k, I can log on as the user name and the pass he was given for a "guest account" I load w2k and everything is fine, when I pop in the xp cd and choose install, it says I have to be an administrator to run this program. So I checked the accounts and I was able to screw around with a member of the admin group, I will use the name "John" as the account. "John" is a member of the admin group and has full control of the computer. I changed the password for "John" and was able to log on as him. However same thing, have to be an admin to run the install. So I changed the password of the administrator and tried logging back on as admin and got "local policy does not allow you to log on interactively". I checked the local policy settings and local log on is enabled. So back to square one. So my questions are, (1) if I can log onto the machine as a member of the administrator group, why I can't perform the install?(2) Why can't I log on locally if I set the admin password to my desired choice?(3) Is there a way to run the install via w2k?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter getting the F11 restore (full factory format and reinstall) to work I went to the MS update site. This machine is running XP Pro SP1. I want to get the updates and install SP2. At the MS update site I see many updates needed and I start the download. They all download but on install they hang. Restarting gives the same problem. So I pop the SP2 disk in the drive and start it. It extracts, starts the Inventory, and hangs. Laptop doesn't freeze, the install just stops. Even tried it in Safe Mode and it hangs either on the Inventory or the next item, I forget which one.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an older laptop in which the hard drive and broken on, I was hoping to fix it so that my in-laws could use it to keep in touch with family via Skype. So...I purchsed a new 20gb hard drive and fitted it yesterday. The laptop booted up ok but after the Bios screen displayed an error message of "ntldr is missing press ctrl, alt, delete to restart" When I rebooted with my Windows XP cd in it's gets just past the Bios screen and then displays some errors in French! The jist of these errors I think is that the boot.ini file could not be found. I tried to reboot but I still get another error message in french! From what I can see it does not say anything about boot.ini this time though. I have also tried a XP Recovery Console Repair to no avail either and have exhausted everything I know. what I need to do to install XP onto this HDD (it has been formatted too)? Any explanation on why the messages are in French? Also one thing to mention is that when I manage to boot with XP Live CD and use Command Prompt the letters I type on the keyboard come out all wrong ie. : comes out as * and m comes out as 0

View 11 Replies View RelatedSo I have tried EVERYTHING to get an operating system onto my Acer 3610 laptop. It has a brand new IDE Hard Drive, brand new RAM chips.
I have tried to load XP by using the standard install disc. I have tried to pre-load the i386 folder onto the HD and run through DOS. I have tried to install DOS 7.1. I have tried to install XP using a Win98 Boot Disc. I have tried to install using Hiren's Boot CD.
Every time I try there is an unknown issue. When directly booting from XP cd gives a "LINE 1026 txtsetup.sif error." DOS 7.1 has a "CPU Error - Incorrect OPCODE." I have tried using another laptop to start the XP install process, then move the hard drive back to the Acer when XP setup reaches the "Remove DISC and restart computer" portion.
I cannot seem to figure out what the issue is. I have seen posts saying several of these are hardware issues, although every removable piece of hardware is either replaced or have been reset on the laptop.
I am reinstalling Xp and I am getting this blue screen error message
0x0000008e
(0xc000001d, 0x806e5049, 0x80550280, 0x00000000)
The computer is an Acer laptop 5610
how can i solve this problem?
Install windows home edition on my dell laptop or do I have to buy a dell specific disk.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that when i put the hard drive in my laptop, windows xp setup doesn't recognize it (I know it needs the SATA support drivers) and i don't want to slipstream the drivers and burn another disc. So I put that same hard drive (from my laptop) in my desktop and xp setup did recognize it. But I wanted to be sure before I went ahead and started the installation. So is it ok that I use my desktop to install xp on my laptop hard drive and put it back into my laptop? Keep in mind i'm trying to install windows xp tablet edition which is different from other xp installations.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just recently did a reformat and clean install of windows (to get rid of all the dell bloatware that came with my laptop, clean the registry, etc). Problem is, now programs are opening really really slowly. For example, photoshop is taking a super long time to open, it used to be much faster.Internet/Firefox seems to work fine, but in general I can tell something isn't right. I'm pretty confident it's not a virus/malware problem, as I just reformatted, did a new install of windows, and have had zonealarm running from the start (and yes, zonealarm was running all the time previous to the reformat).

View 12 Replies View RelatedI've recently purchased an HP G50 laptop, and decided to wipe off Vista and install XP - I did this with a few laptops before, no problem. However this laptop is proving to be a real headache. It won't boot from the Windows XP install CD at all The furthest I get is at the "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt, then the screen stays black. I booted without the hard drive to see if this was causing the issue, but the problem persisted. The CD had no problem booting on 4 other machines. I tried a different CD and that didn't make the problem go away. The laptop will boot any Linux install/live cd I shoot at it, yet it refuses to boot the Windows XP install CD.

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhile trying to fix another problem, by repairing WP on an Averatec 3200, the Install went into the actual install mode, rather than the repair mode. As I don't have the security key (someone who will go un-named, but I have my suspicions, threw away the plastic CD holder with the key taped to the back) I can't continue the install and I can't get the install off the computer. The reason that I was trying to repair is that I have the Log-on Virus which makes it impossible to log on and do anything about the virus. Can't even get to SAFE mode to try to remove the virus with Spyware Doctor.

HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a fresh copy of windows XP sp2 on 2 machines. Both Dell Optiplex desktops. Usually it prompts that it has found new hardware for each device it hasn't found drivers for. Device manager lists them with a yellow exclamation icon.Problem I have now though is that the fresh install of XP does not show these prompt at all, although device manager lists them and if i go in there and update driver the device works. The problem I have is that basically i usually copy a driver heirarchy to the systemdrive and point the registry at them, which results in automatic installation on boot. This no longer works and I assume they are related as it doesn't look like it's automatically trying to install these devices. Is there a setting somewhere, seems very strange, what with it being a fresh install?
