It's an IBM R51 with XP Pro.I've been using Zone Alarm on my desktop with Windows 98, would like to keep it but as I'm new to XP I'm needing some tips on what to remove or replace. After years of 98, XP is a total Nightmare to me, I read somewhere here that XP has it's own firewall and it should be removed before installing ZA How do I do that Can't find a thing.

I am using Vista but since I don't believe this is a Vista specific issue, I thought I'd post here. A few days ago, my laptop froze and the monitor went to a random array of stripes and colors. I powered it off, and when I started it up again, all the lights went on and I could hear it turning on but the monitor never came on. All the lights remained on but I don't think it completed startup since I didn't hear any sounds. I repeated this a few times, and it kept happening. Then I gave up and let it sit overnight. The next morning, it turned on no problem. However, later that day the screen froze and messed up again. Now I am either unable to start it up again, or it starts up and later freezes. The freezing seems to correspond to how long I wait before starting up the laptop again. If I wait a few minutes, it freezes after a few minutes as well and if I start it up quickly, it doesn't get very far. I recently flew to Hong Kong (where I am now) and the problem started a day after I arrived. I have a feeling that the problem is related to the move. My laptop is an HP dv2320us and is about 4 months old. I'm pretty lost now,

I have a Toshiba Satellite with a Celeron M, 1.4Ghz, 1.5Gb RAM, and XP Home. In the past few days, it has slowed down to a crawl. Programs like Sound Forge that opened almost instantly now take a minute or more. I ran a complete virus scan and found nothing. System Restore won't work - even in Safe Mode. It's like everything is in slow motion. The CPU is active even when I'm doing nothing.

I have a new problem, or at least new to me. My computer was shutdown without my knowledge, and all the peripherals disconnected and the entire unit set in the floor. (My wife moved out, and took the desk as well as her USB hard drive.) Now, when I booted it up, it keeps trying to install programs that are already there. When I tell it to cancel the installation, it just does it again. It keeps repeating this process for 6 or 7 tries, then quits for a few minutes. After a few minutes pass, it does it again. I've done a virus scan with AVG, scanned it with Spybot S&D, and nothing shows up. I've tried a system restore, but it will not restore to any point before today.

I am having a great deal of trouble installing Windows XPon an Acer laptop. I have added the query below, and would be very grateful if anybody could suggest a solution.
"Acer laptop model Aspire 5101, supplied with Vista Home Premium.
Hard disk is apparently split into three partitions C, D and (hidden) small F according to Partition Manager.
I have formatted the drive and tried to load Window XP Home with Service Pack 2, but willnot continue installation.
-approx 75 % complete - as (quote) "cannot find file".
What purpose does hidden partition serve? Any information please on how to achieve full instal of XP?"

I am quite familiar with desktop hardware and some software issues, so this is quite a conundrum for me. My knowledge is usually regarding older desktops and OS Systems (stuff not using firewire, but IDE, for example)
1) Introduction: Basically, I purchased a newly refurbished laptop HP Compaq NX7400 on Friday. I had them deliver it with no software as it reduced its price and I don?t like vista yet. When I went to install an OS (XP PRO SP1) it gave me an error message as follows: Setup did not find any HDD installed in your computer.
Make sure any HDD are powered on and properly connected to your computer and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. etup can not continue. To quit setup press F3?
2) attempts to fix:
A) I formatted and partitioned my hard drive using Western Digital?s Data Life Guard (DLG) it was an 80 GB hard drive. Okay so there is one there. But the odd thing was that it was registered as a BIOS hard drive? I am not sure on this?....

My bud purchased a laptop at one of those "liquidation sales'" a week ago and its a nice laptop, person who sold it was legit and it booted up and all was fine. It currently has w2k pro on it and I am going to put XP Pro on it. Here is the problems. BTW this is an IBM Thinkpad. The machine only has a cd-rom bay and I tried to install xp pro via the cd-rom drive and no dice. Upon the boot I hit F12 to choose boot sequence and I choose cd-rom and it just goes to the w2k start up screen. My XP cd is a retail version. So I then decided I would have to access the bios to make it boot by default to the cd-rom, well the bios are password protected. So no dice there also.So I actually went to do the install via w2k, I can log on as the user name and the pass he was given for a "guest account" I load w2k and everything is fine, when I pop in the xp cd and choose install, it says I have to be an administrator to run this program. So I checked the accounts and I was able to screw around with a member of the admin group, I will use the name "John" as the account. "John" is a member of the admin group and has full control of the computer. I changed the password for "John" and was able to log on as him. However same thing, have to be an admin to run the install. So I changed the password of the administrator and tried logging back on as admin and got "local policy does not allow you to log on interactively". I checked the local policy settings and local log on is enabled. So back to square one. So my questions are, (1) if I can log onto the machine as a member of the administrator group, why I can't perform the install?(2) Why can't I log on locally if I set the admin password to my desired choice?(3) Is there a way to run the install via w2k?

I just upgraded from windows ME to Xp, Anyway I probably did somthing wrong in the settings because when I try to install a program, it by default chooses an install path in the program files directory in my D drive. I really want these to go to program files in the C drive like normal though. How can I change the default install path or drive for new programs?

I just reinstalled WIN XP Pro, and now I sitll have the programs on the hard drive, but nothing in the "START / All Programs" menu. I recall on other Win OSs' that they had a "search for installed Program" option. Does Win XP pro have anything like that ?
I am aware some programs will have to be re-installed due to regeistration issues. I am hoping not too many.

Unable to install ANY programs or updates on my pc.There have been changes made to the permissions, network sharing and connections. I am getting Windows cannot open the local policy database. Access to database has been denied. when trying to access security settings from Admin Tools. although my userid is on the Administrators group with full privileges. my %systemroot% is set to share, everyone with full access. I can send a HJT log if requested. what can I do? there are also many internet pages that are no longer loading (says cookies disabled) even tho they are on the trusted list, and even with BitDefender and ZoneAlarm shut down. I have knocked up against this for 3 days, but do not seem to be making progress.

I have a computer that I was trying to do a clean install of Windows XP. I have done this before with this computer and never had any problems. Before I decided to do reformat the hard drive, the computer kept freezing up. Most of the time it would freeze at the Windows screen and I could not get past that. So I put in my disc, ran through the installation, deleted all partitions and had no problems and my machine had to reboot. The first time it froze at the setup with 39 minutes left, so I restarted it. I got the message that set up was restarting. Only it didn't. It kept restarting the computer and then I got the dreaded blue screen saying that Windows had to shut down. I restarted it again and got a blue screen saying that my registry was probably corrupt or missing some files. Now I can't do anything with this. Please help. I don't want to have to buy a new computer. I did not install any new programs or anything to my computer at all before this.

After getting the F11 restore (full factory format and reinstall) to work I went to the MS update site. This machine is running XP Pro SP1. I want to get the updates and install SP2. At the MS update site I see many updates needed and I start the download. They all download but on install they hang. Restarting gives the same problem. So I pop the SP2 disk in the drive and start it. It extracts, starts the Inventory, and hangs. Laptop doesn't freeze, the install just stops. Even tried it in Safe Mode and it hangs either on the Inventory or the next item, I forget which one.

I have an older laptop in which the hard drive and broken on, I was hoping to fix it so that my in-laws could use it to keep in touch with family via Skype. So...I purchsed a new 20gb hard drive and fitted it yesterday. The laptop booted up ok but after the Bios screen displayed an error message of "ntldr is missing press ctrl, alt, delete to restart" When I rebooted with my Windows XP cd in it's gets just past the Bios screen and then displays some errors in French! The jist of these errors I think is that the boot.ini file could not be found. I tried to reboot but I still get another error message in french! From what I can see it does not say anything about boot.ini this time though. I have also tried a XP Recovery Console Repair to no avail either and have exhausted everything I know. what I need to do to install XP onto this HDD (it has been formatted too)? Any explanation on why the messages are in French? Also one thing to mention is that when I manage to boot with XP Live CD and use Command Prompt the letters I type on the keyboard come out all wrong ie. : comes out as * and m comes out as 0

Everything was working perfectly until the other day and all of a sudden a program I have been using...Ulead Video Studio strted hanging up. I rebooted and it kept doing the same thing. I decided to uninstall the program and reinstall it but it took forever to uninstall it. Then I tried to reinstall it and that took forever as well. Just to make sure it was not a problem with that particular program I tried another one and had the same issues. I also noticed that my boot speed was a lot slower at start up....not the initial boot but when the programs were loading ie. Norton AV and firewall. My computer seems to run ok when you start a program but the major issue is installing or uninstalling an application. I ran windows update and even that took forever to install the update. I ran Adware and virus scan and there are no problems.

Does anyone know how to properly configure a multi-hard drive Windows XP Home PC with XP OS files on the boot hard drive (30 GB in my case) and all other program & data files on two separate partitions of a 160 GB drive, so that whenever my system starts slowing down, I can wipe the Windows OS drive clean & do a clean install of XP on it, without having to reinstall some 50+ and growing applications I have downloaded but don't have on CD or DVD?Someone I met in passing but didn't get the details from said this was how he had his PC set up, and that all you have to do is make a backup of your Registry files on the non-OS HD and just restore/reinstall the registry on the OS HD after clean installing XP on the OS HD. Microsoft tech support personnel I have asked about this say this is not something they support and they deny this is possible.
But, as I have run semi-weekly virus & malware scans using multiple products and deleted all of the suspicious files they find and am still experiencing increasingly slow and erratic system performance, MS told me I should do a clean install, after burning all of my downloaded program files to DVD and backing up all my data files (already being performed nightly to the 160 GB drive data files partition), then reinstall all drivers and programs off CDs & DVDs. I estimate this will take a good 8-10 hours every time I want to reinstall XP, which I consider an excessive drag on my productivity in my real business. Does anyone know whether the concept I outlined above is feasible, and if so, where can one find a succinct guide on how to implement it, including a clear map of what directories other than C:Windows any OS files are in, and recommendations for a good registry editor program?
