I am running a Dell 4600 with Windows xp Home addition. When i tried to install a new program, i get an error that my Windows Installer is not working properly.I don't know what could of caused this, but when i tried to do some of the Windows updates, they would not intall either.

Automatically quarantine everything it spotted.Even then, the problem was still there. I didn't care, since I really had to get with other things.I tried to install some software trial But it didn't let me install it, it popped up a message saying I was missing js32.dll.I rebooted my lap, and now every time I log in to windows, all that appears is my wallpaper. View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Service Pack 3 on a friend's laptop that is running XP Pro. It has SP2 installed on it. The error I get is: c:/windows/system32/ftp.exe is open or another application using it (or something like that). I ran the task manager and could not locate any running process or application that is obvious using ftp.exe.I did find the file in the system32 folder...but that's it. I have considered renaming ftp.exe something else temporarily but it says I don't have authority to do so or that is maybe already running. I am running another virus scan on it now. The computer has AVG 8.0 on it for anti-virus. I have run lavasoft's adaware too. I have also tried to install this in safe mode, but that didn't work either.

On the newest one, after much trouble and with the help of others, I got everything to update and download:On my system with XP Home, I get the following error message when I go to the update site and SP downloads fine but fails to install and gives the same error message as follows: "The file c:windowssystem32smss.exe is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry."No other applications are ever running when this occurs and I am baffled by it. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

It is telling me: the file "asms" on windows xp home edition service pack 2 cd is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click okay.I enter d: ( my cd drive) and nothing. it says: globalrootdevice cdromoi386 in the path line. nothing. View 2 Replies View Related2 SATA Raid hard drives with striping.I'm having problems installing Windows XP Pro on my machine. When we first started to install the OS on the machine, I kept getting a blue screen error message before it boots into setup saying ERROR 0X0000007B. And then after that it started showing up book disk failure. Instead of SATA we tried just one EIDE HD, we switched memory, new cables, new powersupply, we switched the vcard. And just recently we finally switched the Motherboard. Now when we boot off disc we get an error message saying "boot disk failure". So we ran a boot setup windows xp floppy. It gets all the way to where it asks for "please insert windows xp installation cd" and when I do it doesnt recognize it but I hear the CD spinning. We've switched out the CD-roms with 2 different ones and still can't get any progress.

I think the problem started when I was installing a program called eBay Blackthorne from a download. Now, any install/uninstall is affected.
The error is "Internal error # 2738".
I have recently had to reinstall my PC from scratch. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.
PC wont boot up any more , it says there could be a currupt or missing file , it says its config system and says it might be able to repair the file using the install disc. i have a System Recovery CD-ROM

View 1 Replies View RelatedMan, my computer for the last two weeks have been crashing like an emo. I mean, when I play GTA: San Adreas, in 20 minutes, I get a BSOD with a stop error. When I put hardware acceleration to full, in a half an hour, I get a BSOD with a similar error. Believe me, I got three kinds of errors, and some were from different time. I believe the problem either came from the either the PSU, new 512 mb of ram, old 512, CPU, system board, or the graphic card. I'll try to post the error as best as I can. I can't get anywhere into Windows, I've done F2, F8, F12, everything I could think of without risking more damage. I've booted from the system mechanic CD with the Hard Drive recovery, and while it said it found and fixed a problem, it didn't fix this one.
When I'm trying to start up Windows XP Home Edition I receive an error box without an error message, I can just click YES or NO. Neither option let's me continue. When starting up in Safe Mode, everything works fine.

I have a new problem, or at least new to me. My computer was shutdown without my knowledge, and all the peripherals disconnected and the entire unit set in the floor. (My wife moved out, and took the desk as well as her USB hard drive.) Now, when I booted it up, it keeps trying to install programs that are already there. When I tell it to cancel the installation, it just does it again. It keeps repeating this process for 6 or 7 tries, then quits for a few minutes. After a few minutes pass, it does it again. I've done a virus scan with AVG, scanned it with Spybot S&D, and nothing shows up. I've tried a system restore, but it will not restore to any point before today.

When I turn my pc and windows loads up an error message appears saying that windows service pack 2 setup has encountered an error and has to close. However when I close the error message it keeps popping up every 20 seconds or so. When I went to microsofts website that told me that service pack 2 was installed on my pc. I have ran a full viral scan using the latest version of Panda and have also ran Reg-cure to see if the problem was in the registry but the error message still keeps popping up.
