SP3 Won't Install. Ftp.exe Is Running Error Message
Nov 19, 2008I am trying to install Service Pack 3 on a friend's laptop that is running XP Pro. It has SP2 installed on it. The error I get is: c:/windows/system32/ftp.exe is open or another application using it (or something like that). I ran the task manager and could not locate any running process or application that is obvious using ftp.exe.I did find the file in the system32 folder...but that's it. I have considered renaming ftp.exe something else temporarily but it says I don't have authority to do so or that is maybe already running. I am running another virus scan on it now. The computer has AVG 8.0 on it for anti-virus. I have run lavasoft's adaware too. I have also tried to install this in safe mode, but that didn't work either.

Jun 22, 2008I have three XP computers (described in my profile). On one SP3 installed fine right away. On the newest one, after much trouble and with the help of others, I got everything to update and download:On my system with XP Home, I get the following error message when I go to the update site and SP downloads fine but fails to install and gives the same error message as follows: "The file c:windowssystem32smss.exe is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry."No other applications are ever running when this occurs and I am baffled by it. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

It is telling me: the file "asms" on windows xp home edition service pack 2 cd is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click okay.I enter d: ( my cd drive) and nothing. it says: globalrootdevice cdromoi386 in the path line. nothing. Nov 8, 2008Vista was installed on my pc. I want to install XP Pro. I come to a point wherer I get a message that says oembios.bin could not be copied during the beginning og installation. Everything else get copied. Now after the installation it I get I message that preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer. Error code: 0�80070002. I searched and get a solution on this issue as well (By expanding OEMBIOS.BI_ and move the OEMBIOS.BIN to the SYSTEM 32 folder in Safe mode).
When restarting windows the desktop background image is blue and a lot of windows programs are missing (Internet Explorer, Remote desktop and more). It doesn't let me even get into msconfig. Now, I know that the installation disc work perfect and it isn't the cd. I do have a HP_Recovery partition and tempted to format it but I also don't want to face any complications later on. But it seems that it is HP_Recovery that blocks xp instalation out, since it indicates that the laptop is locked to VISTA in BIOS.

(by the way, before my task bar was gone and everything, i cliked on my computer and looked at my ram. it said 256mb of ram. i have 512mb stick!).....

Aug 3, 2009After our Dell Inspiron E1505 recently crashed , Dell talked us thru diagnostics and finally sent us a replacement(refurbished) Toshiba hard drive to install in our computer. After installing it, and reloading all of the software for Windows XP, MS Office Small Business 2003, drivers and utilities, using the discs that came with the computer, we have a "Found New Hardware" window that pops up - Wizard trying to install a "Base System Device" everytime we turn the computer on. It asks for a disc but none of my existing ones seem to be the correct one. I've given it permission to connect to the Internet to "find" the software but nothing works.Also, since the crash/re-install, our C drive only has 12.4 GBs of total disc space, and of that, only 1.2 is still free space. My D drive has about 37 GBs of disc space. Could these two problems be connected? The computer was running so slow and we would periodically get a message "low virtual memory". This weekend, I moved as many of our documents as possible to the D drive to try and free up space. It's a little better, but why do I have such a small amount of disc space?

Nov 14, 20062 SATA Raid hard drives with striping.I'm having problems installing Windows XP Pro on my machine. When we first started to install the OS on the machine, I kept getting a blue screen error message before it boots into setup saying ERROR 0X0000007B. And then after that it started showing up book disk failure. Instead of SATA we tried just one EIDE HD, we switched memory, new cables, new powersupply, we switched the vcard. And just recently we finally switched the Motherboard. Now when we boot off disc we get an error message saying "boot disk failure". So we ran a boot setup windows xp floppy. It gets all the way to where it asks for "please insert windows xp installation cd" and when I do it doesnt recognize it but I hear the CD spinning. We've switched out the CD-roms with 2 different ones and still can't get any progress.

Oct 19, 2007I have recently had to reinstall my PC from scratch. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.

Dec 5, 2009while trying to fix another problem, by repairing WP on an Averatec 3200, the Install went into the actual install mode, rather than the repair mode. As I don't have the security key (someone who will go un-named, but I have my suspicions, threw away the plastic CD holder with the key taped to the back) I can't continue the install and I can't get the install off the computer. The reason that I was trying to repair is that I have the Log-on Virus which makes it impossible to log on and do anything about the virus. Apr 18, 2005HI, I just installed windows 2000 professional onto my computer. Everything works fine except that the resolution is really grainy. On some web sites I cannot even make out what the words are. I found out that when I go into my monitor settings in display properties I am unable to install the drivers for my monitor. Does anybody know a way in which I can get around this.

Sep 25, 2007I have just installed a fresh copy of windows XP sp2 on 2 machines. Both Dell Optiplex desktops. Usually it prompts that it has found new hardware for each device it hasn't found drivers for. Device manager lists them with a yellow exclamation icon.Problem I have now though is that the fresh install of XP does not show these prompt at all, although device manager lists them and if i go in there and update driver the device works.The problem I have is that basically i usually copy a driver heirarchy to the systemdrive and point the registry at them, which results in automatic installation on boot. This no longer works and I assume they are related as it doesn't look like it's automatically trying to install these devices.Is there a setting somewhere, seems very strange, what with it being a fresh install?
