There is this shield in the tray on the right hand end of my task bar that says that updates are ready for your computer, click here to install.Well, I don't want to install them and I would like to get rid of the shield so I won't hit it accidentally. There is also a security alert shield I would like to get rid of.

Long time since I posted for help but right now I have the Windows Explorer message Winows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience. in the middle of my screen It appears on boot and remains there .If I click close ,the desktop icons disappear and reappear and the message also reappears several seconds later,In those few seconds things seem to operate normally but after it appears, things on the screen just blink once when I click on them and nothing else happens. If I click something , and then click close on the message, it clears the desktop and reappears the previous click is then executed and the lockup is back .I can do things one at a time by repeating this closing process and the application on the screen does not close but reappears also

Bought new game software and ready to install. Placed disc in drive and bang, within seconds receive an error message reading: an error has occurred while running setup. Please make sure you have finished any previous setups and closed other applications..." Then the details of this Error 5003 goes as follows:
Error Code:-5003 : 0x5
Error Information:
>SetupDLLSetupDLL.cpp (1964)
PAPP:Star Wars? Knights of the Old Republic? II: The Sith Lords(TM)

Recently, I have come across a problem in the internet Explorer of my system. After I start Internet Explorer it does not cause any problem but when I close even one Internet Explorer window it asks me if I should send the error report. Even if I say, Send Report or Don't Send,it just closes down all my Internet Explorer opened windows.

Does anyone know of a list of best practices or third party tool(s) for safely installing and completely uninstalling applications in Windows XP? I want to be able to install applications into Windows XP so that if the app were to corrupt my Windows installation, I can remove it completely and restore my Windows XP back to a ?good? state. I've installed hundreds, maybe thousands of apps on Windows XP platforms. I've tried all sorts of methods for installing apps. These methods include:
? Running Windows in a ?clean boot? configuration: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
? Creating a system restore before each installation
? Using tools that monitor installs and supposedly provide a way to uninstall apps like Advanced Uninstaller Pro: http://www.innovative-sol.com/uninstaller/index.htm? Etc., etc............

Is there a way to combine the installation of apps and the OS and automate it on a single DVD besides disk imaging? Also is there a way to make a SP2 XP install disk with all my updates because the one I have only has SP1?

If you need to re-install a hidden Windows component, there is an easy way to do this. Open the INF folder in your windows folder [C:WINDOWSINF] Find the *.inf files. Find the application title you need in the filename [for example messenger is msmsgs.inf] If you are unsure of the installer, RIGHT CLICK on the file, then select open, at the top of the file should say what application it is:; MSMSGS.INF; Setup INF file for Messenger When you have found the file the right click on it then click install.Tip: To reinstall Microsoft Outlook Express, Right click and select install on MSOE50.inf.

I cannot install new applications on my WinXP HE. I've tried 10 or more and all give me a similar problem: error during install. some say, that they do not have write access to "program files" dir, but that's nonsense, since the installer installs the directory and some files already.

I have a legit copy of windows xp professional that I obtained through school. When the update icon appears and I try to install the updates it comes back giving a least of updates it could not install. When I go to the microsoft update page it first wants to download the Genuine Windows Validation install, however, it does so unsuccessfully. I have ran the windows diagnostic which came back and said my copy of windows is genuine need updates.

I've recently updated SP2 to the third one and then again after i ran Windows Update(R!) instantly, ok all updates downloaded properly(thanks god!) but then there lies the problem, not one of these 16 updates would install, I even downloaded IE7 and WMP 11 manually hoping it would change sth in updates and they'd install(this one works in many occasions if you run xp!) Well i haven't yet dared to clear my cache and download the updates again for two reasons!: 1- i have a 128 connection so i should leave pc turned on for another whole night 2- i'm somehow sure it wouldn't work and the problem lies somewhere beneath the hidden layers of windows engineering.

I am using a Windows XP Professional computer with service pack 3.When the update icon (yellow diamond) appeared in my systray I tried to install the following three updates:
1) Microsoft.Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)
2) Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5 SP1 and >net Framework 2.0 Security Update for Windows 2000. Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB979909)
3) Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)
Although the updates completed, apparently they were not installed properly because the yellow update diamond icon repeatedly keeps appearing in my systray. In Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, only the first two updates (1) and 2) above appear in that list. From that Add/Remove Programs list, I tried uninstalling the first update (KB974417) and then manually installing it. This did not help. That file still keeps reappearing after I reboot the computer and then click on the yellow update diamond icon in my systray.
I checked the web for advice on how to solve this problem. All I could find were solutions that either didn't work or were complicated and beyond my ability to understand them.To avoid having to wait for the updates to attempt to install each time I turn off my computer, I turned off the Automatic Updates feature. Of course I would like to be able to turn this feature back on if I can solve this problem. What could be causing this problem of the yellow, update icon repeatedly reappearing in my systray after the updates apparently were installed? Is there a fairly straightforward way of correcting this problem?

When I turn my pc and windows loads up an error message appears saying that windows service pack 2 setup has encountered an error and has to close. However when I close the error message it keeps popping up every 20 seconds or so. When I went to microsofts website that told me that service pack 2 was installed on my pc. I have ran a full viral scan using the latest version of Panda and have also ran Reg-cure to see if the problem was in the registry but the error message still keeps popping up.
