No Add/remove Programs - Cannot Install The Windows Installer.
May 7, 2007Right, I've uninstalled Windows Installer and installed the latest version, but it didnt install properly and I have no add/remove programs and cannot install the Windows Installer.
I've tryed reinstalling in safe mode, rebooting about 9 times and I cannot install it

Feb 26, 2008I had noticed that I could copy but not paste. For example, I could right click an icon on the Desktop and copy it, but using Ctrl-V or right-clicking on the Desktop to Paste did not work. In fact, the option is not even highlighted in the shortcut menu. Even to drag and drop an item from one folder to another is not possible. However, I can copy and paste text, like copying and pasting a sentence is MS Word. I also found out that I cannot install any programs on this same computer. This is the exact error message I get when trying to install Ad-Aware:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. "

The remaining suggestion is a Windows repair, but I'd like to avoid that drastic step. I don't look forward to reinstalling all the software I've accumulated over the past five years. The Windows updates alone would take the better part of a day.My question is: can you recommend a program which will remove every trace of MSIEXEC and every registry entry for the installer, so that I would be able to download and install version 3.0? I tried to do this, but upon starting the installation, got a message which said that the present Installer on my system was later than the one I was attempting to install. Seems an aborted install of version 3.1 had left enough traces to appear to have been installed.

Dec 26, 2007Whenever I start up IE7 "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" pops up. The problem is my internet is working for SOME programs. Firefox is working fine, but IE7 is not. Also Steam, Ventrilo, and AIM work fine, but programs such as, UBI Internet, and Gas Powered Games Internet, and almost all games do not work. It says Winsock error problem, but I have fixed the registry keys and followed all instructions.

Jan 30, 2009I have a windows XP box with SP 3. Once booted into Windows I immediately start getting Windows Installer trying to install something. Clearly there is a failed installation in there that windows installer keeps trying to install but can't. When try to intall something new I get the "This happens with windows in running in safe mode or windows installer is installed incorrectly" message. I tried installing windows installer 3.1, but it tells me it is already installed and quits. I tried installing the Windows Intaller Cleanup program that RProffit linked to, but then I get the windows installer is broken message and it can't install. Seems like I am in for a reformat and reload?

I fixed that by finishing the installation (putting the disc back in 4 or 5 months later, we don't get to visit much), but during the time she had the problem,which was right when she got the computer,97 or so Windows Updates downloaded to the computer, but couldn�t install.

I let in automatically install updates. I know 'stupid'. I now have it set to notify me before installing. Anyway, one of the updates was some version on windows explorer. It is always attempting to Install. It doesn't say what what it is installing. I look on the internet and one told me how to find out what it is attempting to install. It came back as "3.1.400.5512" I'm think that is internet explorer 3.1 not sure. It slows my computer, won't let me go online because it interfers with the sign on window pop up.

Immediately after Windows starts up a window pops up titled: Windows Installer - Preparing to install. Also, I have been using Avg Free Editon Virus Scan and Windows Firewall and still managed to get 2 viruses today while they were running. Can you recommend a top of the line virus scan and firewall. I have been told that Pc-Cillin is a good virus scan because it has an integrated virus scan and firewall.

Mar 30, 2008The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.

Jul 22, 2009I have a file with a non-windows extension (.LUP to be precise) which doesn't have an associated Windows-specific program. I have got a program called HexEdit (simple Hex and ASCII editor) which I didn't install (since it came from a colleague in a folder with just the .exe and files needed to run the program) and so Windows didn't populate the "Open With" programs menu with the program. When I try to add it (by Browsing for the .exe in the "Open With" menu) I click on the .exe, and click "OK" yet it doesn't get added to the list. I then tried to add the shortcut to the program to this list, but then I get the error message "[This program] is not a valid Win32 application". I've added the shortcut to the Programs folder in the Start Menu, yet still to no avail.So my 2 questions are: 1) How can I get rid of the shortcut which has now appeared in the "Open With" programs menu? and 2) Is there a way to get this .exe file to appear in this list (possibly by some Registry hack) without installing any 3rd-party programs (since IT at the company I work at gets really shirty about that sort of thing)?
