Whenever I start up IE7 "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" pops up. The problem is my internet is working for SOME programs. Firefox is working fine, but IE7 is not. Also Steam, Ventrilo, and AIM work fine, but programs such as, UBI Internet, and Gas Powered Games Internet, and almost all games do not work. It says Winsock error problem, but I have fixed the registry keys and followed all instructions.

The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a file with a non-windows extension (.LUP to be precise) which doesn't have an associated Windows-specific program. I have got a program called HexEdit (simple Hex and ASCII editor) which I didn't install (since it came from a colleague in a folder with just the .exe and files needed to run the program) and so Windows didn't populate the "Open With" programs menu with the program. When I try to add it (by Browsing for the .exe in the "Open With" menu) I click on the .exe, and click "OK" yet it doesn't get added to the list. I then tried to add the shortcut to the program to this list, but then I get the error message "[This program] is not a valid Win32 application". I've added the shortcut to the Programs folder in the Start Menu, yet still to no avail.So my 2 questions are: 1) How can I get rid of the shortcut which has now appeared in the "Open With" programs menu? and 2) Is there a way to get this .exe file to appear in this list (possibly by some Registry hack) without installing any 3rd-party programs (since IT at the company I work at gets really shirty about that sort of thing)?

Anyhow, since then, the mouse refuses to work. I can always reboot...till the cows come home; but I'm unable to click on any icon on the desktop because the mouse appears stuck in one postion.

The message comes up please wait while the list is being populated and then nothing else happens. The longest I waited was 45 minutes while I went off and did something else. The list never appeared. I was checking my daughters pc for some usual maintenance. The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?

Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI de-infected a windows XP system with SP3 and IE7. Once I did that, http no longer loaded in IE. It does not work in portable firefox either. I can type in ftp:// ftp address and IE works. Likewise I
can use https:// and the page loads! What is going on: I tried:
1) Reset ie7 as per MS
2) Removed IE 7
2a) IE6 would not load http either
3) reapplied SP3
4) Repair install win winxp cd.
5) Deleted and re-installed network card
This is where I am now. Still no http://. Since multiple applications are affected, I do not think it is a browser helper.
we had to remove Visual Studio 2005...when uninstalling VS it tells you to unistall portions in order...we did that and now nothing is listed in Add/Remove Programs relating to VS at all...however, in the start menu there is MS SQL Server 2005 configuration tools...when you reboot windows xp you get an error saying SQL Server could not start...well, we don't want SQL Server 2005 on there and are trying to remove it but it is not listed in Add/Remove at all...can't find anything relating to this at all.how do we remove SQL Server 2005 configuration tools?

When I attempt to uninstall a program, the corresponding programs "uninstaller", asks for a network resource. Here is an example screen shot of what I am seeing when I attempt to uninstall Ad Aware: It doesn't seem to matter what I am attempting to uninstall. In all of the uninstall scenarios that I have seen Add / Remove programs asks for an MSI file with a similar name to the program that I am attempting to uninstall.

I was able to locate them using "search" then open and pin to start menu. (The search function displays i.e. shortcuts for "administrator", "guest" and the other user, but not for me. Another problem that I am having is: When I go to add/remove programs, there are NO programs. The message says to wait while the list is being populated but nothing ever shows up. I have a dual-boot system (win 98SE and XP Pro)..It was working before the move.. It also works fine on Win98SE.. When using XP Pro, looking at hardware profiles it says the driver's are installed, but it can't find hardware.. I've tried deleting it there and rebooting and it finds new hardware, but still says it can't see it.. I've already tried a different CD drive with the same results (works on 98SE but not on XP Pro.
