I'm looking for some kind of documentation or flowchart of the Startup and Logon procedure as well as information on what happens when a computer is joined to a domain.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've got several folders under my C:Documents and Settings in XP Home SP2 and I don't think I need all of them, and don't know why there are so many, I never created them, XP did... can I get a brief explination from someone on what's what and what can be safely deleted? I have the following folders under C:Documents and Settings
All Users (does everone logged on any user see everything in this?)
Default User (what's this for?)
Guest (I set this up for visitors)
Local Service (??)
Network Service (??-I'm not on a network, unless my DSL is concidered one)
My Name (This is my main user)
I am running Virtual PC 2007 on a Vista Platform. Everything is good with the exception of setting up shared folders. I have three guest PCs running. I have installed Virtual Machine Additions on all three. I am able to set up and access a shared folder on the host system on one of the three with no problem but the other two refuse to access any shared folder. When I configure the shared folder, it shows up in the guest PC under MyComputer, but it shows as "disconnected" and is inaccessible.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have tried without success to delete a folder from my separate hard drive which I beleive is corrupted in some way. I have copied it elsewhere and it runs fine. I have deleted all the individual files (jpgs) and the details show no files remaining. However I get an error message which tells me I cannot delete the folder as the the directory is not empty. I have tried chdsk and to show hidden files with the Tools command but without success. Any ideas? The folder seems to make my hard drive whir and run very slowly hence my desire to get rid of it. I am running Windows XP with SP2 but mt computer skills are limited!

So could I take the hard drive out of the broken computer, give it two partitions, copy the windows install to one partition, start the the install in the broken computer from that partition and install that onto the second partition? He insists on having admin rights but with admin rights he can reset my password without knowing it even though we are apart of the same group so when I go away he removes my password and goes through my files and stuff. View 1 Replies View RelatedNow I cannot boot without the 120GB plugged in (tried unplugging the drive and booting and it said the it was Unable to boot from disk or something). I eventually deleted the partition on the old drive in setup and then canceled setup, and I still couldn't boot. So I reinstalled winXP on the old drive and now it boots fine. Of course what I have to do is reinstall XP with the drive unplugged, but do I have to completely redo everything, or can I somehow reinstall without starting from scratch? I've tried using the setup disk in windows with the drive unplugged (I know it isn't safe to unplug drives with the computer running but I had run out of ideas), but it said that it couldn't reinstall windows because there was no valid System Partition (which is on the other drive.

On my work PC running XP SP2 when I do a Shut Down or Restart on about a dozen apps I need to Click the End Now button. I have a second PC at the office on XP SP2 and one at home on XP SP1 and on those I don't even see the window for the apps shutting down. On top of that the system can't take them down itself...I MUST click the "End Now" button.

The auto update downloaded the files, but they will not run, so I did a manual update, that file will not run as well. I can run most other exe files OK. What I have noticed is that the files that do not run also do not have information in the properties, like version and such. I have used file Anylzer to query for file information and these files do not have the same type of listings as other files. (Lack of or incomplete version, PE sections, headers). Question: is there something in XP blocking these files because of the lack of information?
I recently bought a new HDD because the old one appears ready to crash (clicking sound). My DVD-Rom is also dead, so I booted from the old hard drive & installed a fresh OS (Windows XP) on the new drive. However, I cannot boot from the new drive alone, because the 'system volume' is Drive C: (old drive) & 'boot volume' is Drive G: (new drive). How can I fix this? I don't mind reinstalling the OS, but I cannot boot from a CD & I don't know how long the old drive will last

Am I reading this correctly, or will it download and LET me install at my convenience? MS Instructions says to turn OFF AV before installing and I am not about to turn off AV while internet is turned on.
I am trying to download win XP, sp3, (for single computer, NOT for "IT" version) and it seems that MS does not want that to happen. I have spent the last hour searching for a MANUAL download of SP3, and not having any luck. Found several ways to get the "IT" version but there is a warning on the site, " NOT for single computers". I want to have a copy of SP3 for future needs and do not want to DISABLE AV while downloading. MS site advises to disable AV before installing SP3. Can anyone give me a link that will let me download SP3 and save to file, for individual computer?
Shortly after IE7 came out of beta I allowed Windows update to automatically download and install the upgrade....it failed, then I went to MS site and manually downloaded and installed IE7. Success. Ever since then I have been unable to downloaded eight downloads...see below.

although Service Pack #3 has installed itself....???...not sure how that happen. Its (SP3)listed in Add/Remove...I have searched the web and followed several suggestions...ie, stop windows update service, then delete several folders from Software and Distributions directory...restart windows update service...reboot machine...and still to no avail.........
New system build has a 320 gig Sata drive, 965 chipset. I have no floppy!I have slipsteamed SP2 and created a new install disk I checked it in old system it boots.The Gigabyte manual says I will need a floppy to install to a SATA drive.What options do I have one thing I am considering is installing on my old 80 gig IDE drive, then, after installing the chipset drivers and such, install the SATA and image the IDE drive to the SATA.

CLASSPATH needs to look like: file1.jar;file2.jar;etc Does anyone know a way to separate multiple entries with a semicolon automatically, rather than entering each .jar file?
