i want to instal a sound card (USB) and when i plug it in XP installs drivers on its own i want to use the CD drivers. there was an option "have disk" cant find it
View 4 RepliesI have a Sony RS-220 desktop w/ XP home w/ SP2 & all updates since that's unable to auto install generic device drivers. I discovered this when I tried plugging in a couple different USB flash drives & it would just stop at the found new hardware wizard. Running the wizard w/ "install the software automatically" & also enabling "also search windows updates" returns unable to find device driver. The USB flash drive was the only bang in device manager. I uninstalled the usb controllers, rebooted and amazingly the controllers wouldn't auto reinstall. Suspecting the behavior extended to more then just USBs/the chipset I uninstalled some unneeded devices (56k modem & 1394) & they also wouldn't auto reinstall.
I went to the sony website & strangely Sony doesn't list the chipset available for download w/ the other drivers I downloaded the chipset direct from intel & installed it but that didn't work either. I've tried many other things to no avail. Malware scans (spybot, AVG AV, rootkitrevealer)...all came up clean. I've tried a new admin user profile, cCleaner registry cleanup, resetting registry permissions w/ subinACL, setting related windows services to automatic, checkdisk /r. Another thing I thought about doing was uninstalling the PCI controller, but I think I recall that can get ugly. Ultimately the only thing that allowed me to get my usb controllers, usb hubs, modem, 1394, & usb drive working was to "install from a list or specific location" & "include this location in the search" C:WINDOWSinf. Does anybody have any idea how I can restore the functionality of generic drivers auto installing & not having to point to an INF directory? Any insight is greatly appreciated.
Hey guys, I've had an empty Device Manager for a long time and I'm only now trying to find out how to fix it.I didn't really worry about it before because everything was working fine, even though it was empty. But recently when I've been trying to install drivers for my video card, and my new game controller there have been issues. For example the driver installation for my radeon 9600 card refuses to start up. And the driver installer for my gamepad fails to recognize that it's even plugged in (even though games recognize the controller just fine).I'm guessing these driver problems are related to the empty device manager? The installer won't install the drivers because it doesn't think the devices are even installed or plugged in the computer.

I tried with all the usb ports on this computer and problem is the same. Even by hooking up a usb keyboard or mouse, computer wont get to the login screen. it keeps on restarting. It wont even go into 'safe mode'.Anyone have any clue whats going on and the solution to fix it?

View 1 Replies View Relatedmy friend give me his Gateway 610XL all in one PC to fix a few problems. one of them was internet explorer not showing up when called for, that was an easy fix; however, this next problem has to do with USB devices and it's giving me a bit of trouble. basically, any USB devices i connect to it, windows doesn't auto install or even try to auto install the drivers. no matter what i connect to it (mouse, keyboard, thumb drive). i can go into device manager and install the drivers manually just fine but i would like to fix the auto install feature for my friend cuz he's not that good with computers. i checked and made sure the following services are enabled:
plug and play
upnp
user mode driver framework
shell hardware detection
the problem persist even in safe mode. one thing i noticed is when i go to control panel and then hit add hardware, i get a message that says this: "you can only install one device at a time. when the other device installation is complete, try this wizard again" (some where along those lines). i get that message even with nothing connected to the USB ports. i'm guessing what ever this "other device" is, it hanging up pnp so how do i go about aborting that installation? i don't really see anything in the task bar that even suggest a driver installation is on the way. this is running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 by that way.
When I put a DVD in either one of my drives, Media Center automatically starts. Both drive are configured to NOT auto-play discs, but Media Center opens everytime. Anyone know a way to disable this "feature".

View 6 Replies View RelatedEvery time I put a DVD into one of my drives, Media Center automatically launches. Drives me insane. This version came pre-installed and I NEVER use it except with my XBOX 360.
1. Both drives are set to ignore all disc types in the AutoPlay properties.
2. There is no setting (I can see) within Media Center to disable this autolaunch.
I have a new xp64 machine, and when I'm away from my machine for 10 mins, I have to re-enter my password to continue working.How can I stop this auto-logout?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with 2 of my computers recognizing USB mass storage devices. They used to work just fine but not any more. When I plug them in (I've tried my Palm - have program to recognize it as a drive - and a new card reader and my camera) I get a message that new hardware is found (mass storage device) but then it takes me to the Found New Hardware Wizard and none of the choices I select (Install Automatically, search web, etc) find any drivers. The crazy thing is, though, that when it did work, the first time I plugged them in the Found New Hardware Wizard didn't come up but it installed what it needed automatically. I'm thinking there is a corrupt driver and was wondering if there was a way to get just that driver back without reinstalling Windows. Also, what's strange is that two of my computers work this way. My one (other) computer accepts everything just fine.

After installing all the drivers including the video card drivers from ATI's website the computer discovered an "unknown device on ATI Radeon X700"The motherboard is a gigabyte 8I865GME-775-RH and obviously a X700 Radeon Video Card. AGP drivers, chipset drivers and the like are all installed. The video card showed up as an unknown device when I first installed, I put in the catalyst drivers and it detected successfully, upon reboot this new unknown device came up and I can not seem to find any drivers for the thing. I tried reinstalling the catalyst drivers as well to no avail.
