Sounds And Audio Devices

Aug 25, 2005

On a users laptop (IBM Thinkpad) the playback button under Sounds and Audio Devices - sounds - program events is greyed out. They are able to hear sounds. I can play a sound file in Media Player, but no sound otherwise. Also, in Shockwave (I know, not a Microsoft product, but I am just listing this as a troubleshooting issue), they don't hear any sound when playing a.swf file.

I have deleted an sound object that allows it in device manager and allowed XP to load wht it will. I still have no sound. I checked for sound services in services and they are started as well.If I load Knoppix and test, my sounds work so I am assumming it is not a hardware problem.

Unassigned Audio Sounds

Jun 4, 2008

Recently I have been getting peculiar audio sounds at random. As these are not sounds that I have loaded on to my machine, I am guessing that some other program did that for me.My question is.. Is there any program that I can run (like Event Viewer)that will display the event and the corresponding sound file (whether it's a wav or dll). Event Viewer doesn't give me this kind of detail and I am curious what is occurring when I hear these sounds.

No Audio Control Or System Sounds

May 9, 2006

The odd thing is that I can still listen to music and watch movies and the sound works fine (I just have to go into the control panel to adjust the system volume).

I've tried reinstalling the audio drivers and it didn't work. I've also checked the "sounds and audio devices" and it lists the sound card under "sound playback" and "sound recording" however, under "voice" there is nothing listed and when I try to set it to the soundcard, it just goes blank again after I hit okay, close the window and open it again.

Audio Devices Grayed Out

Jun 12, 2008

I've been trying to figure this problem out for a while. After a little break, im back on the search for the solution.I've noticed that a lot of people have had the same or similar issue, but the solutions that i've found havn't helped me out.I had an M-audio firewire 410 audio interface, and one day i stupidly unplugged it without first turning off my computer. Ever since that happened, my sound has stopped working, all options in "sounds and audio devices" are greyed out with 'no audio device' showing up. I've uninstalled all m-audio drivers including the hidden ones. I've uninstalled all of my motherboard audio drivers and re-installed them. I've reformatted my whole computer out of desperation and then re-installed the motherboards audio drivers. Still I have the same issue. When i click on the installed audio drivers, it says they are working properly. Is this a hardware issue? do i need a new motherboard?

It spends minutes on the opening screen with the Windows XP thing running left to right
I'm working on it now and it's going fine. Whenever I open a program though it takes a long time but ends up working ok. I can't do anything when I open a song or video.

Can't Adjust Resolution Above 640x480, 4 Bit

Dec 25, 2007

I totally believe this is an OS problem based on the troubleshooting I've done, if the mods feel this would be better in another forum please move it.This is probably going to sound like an easy one, but it's got me stumped. Up until yesterday everything worked fine, until I unplugged my monitor in order to test another machine, when I plugged it back into my main machine I only had 640x480 graphics (this was at the login screen. When I logged in and went to video settings the only options I had were 640x480 and 800x600, but couldn't move the slider to 800x600. The only color quality available was 4 bit. I removed the display adaptor from device manager along with the monitor. On reboot everything looked normal (I had all resolution options available in settings), windows detected a vga controller, but not my actual card. I then installed my video card drivers, on reboot I was back to 640x480.

After Adding RAM Adjust Page File?

Nov 23, 2008

I read somewhere that after adding RAM you also need to adjust the Paging File. I just found an informative article on this. I checked my Page File properties and it reads: C Drive (that's the only drive, no partition)
Custom Size:
Initial: 336 MB
Maximum: 672 MB
I have 990 MB RAM, hence the recommended 1485 MB (1.5 times)Should I increase the Page File size? I don't have a problem with performance, but I also haven't used any memory intensive programs. Also, is there a risk in allowing the system to set Page File? "System managed size"?And why some people recommend the same size for minimum and maximum?

Cannot Adjust Screen Resolution After Updating To SP2

I updated Windows XP to Service Pack 2 yesterday. After installing and re-booting, the screen resolution and the colours of my monitor have changed (big icons and only four colours), which makes it look like it was in Safe Mode (which it isn't).I have tried to change the screen resolution and the colours under Display properties - Settings, but it only gives me the option of a screen resolution of "640x480 pixels" (the slider won't move) and colour quality of "Lowest 4 bit".I presumed it was a driver issue so I have tried to uninstall the graphics controller in the device manager and re-install it with the latest driver.
