Can Not Adjust Resolution Above 640x480 4bit
Dec 24, 2007
When I logged in and went to video settings the only options I had were 640x480 and 800x600, but couldn't move the slider to 800x600. The only color quality available was 4 bit. I removed the display adaptor from device manager along with the monitor. On reboot everything looked normal (I had all resolution options available in settings), windows detected a vga controller, but not my actual card. I then installed my video card drivers, on reboot I was back to 640x480.I removed the display adaptor and rebooted, it returned to a normal screen. I loaded older drivers and I went back to 640x480.

I totally believe this is an OS problem based on the troubleshooting I've done, if the mods feel this would be better in another forum please move it.This is probably going to sound like an easy one, but it's got me stumped. Up until yesterday everything worked fine, until I unplugged my monitor in order to test another machine, when I plugged it back into my main machine I only had 640x480 graphics (this was at the login screen. When I logged in and went to video settings the only options I had were 640x480 and 800x600, but couldn't move the slider to 800x600. The only color quality available was 4 bit. I removed the display adaptor from device manager along with the monitor. The video card on this computer would just cut out from time to time, and i'd to have re-set the cable for it to work. i figured theres a loose connection, so i got another video card to replace it with, since this is a work computer. So after installing the new (actually its a used video card, ASUS v7700 TIvx, but still definitely works) video card, the computer starts up at the correct resolution, 800x600. It looks fine, but when you drag anything or scroll on a web page, the video lags. So i found the correct drivers and installed them, and rebooted.
The computer reboots in 640x480 at 4-bit color quality. when i change the resolution to 800x600 at 32-bit color quality, it just defaults back to 640x480 at 4-bit. i found that i can change the resolution to 800x600 at 4-bit, but when i try 16-bit or 32-bit quality, it just go right back to 640x480 at 4-bit.i thought maybe it was the video card, and tried to install the old one again (its a geforce 2 mx card). so i re-install it and install the correct drivers, and still the same exact thing happens, (prior to any of this, the geforce 2 mx card worked fine at 800x600 at 32-bit) i can't get it to correctly change to 800x600 at 32bit, it just keeps defaulting back to 640x480 at 4-bit.

I've gone into the advanced display settings for monitor and driver, followed all of Dell's Troubleshooting advice, downloaded monitor-specific drivers... I can't increase the resolution. Is this a problem with XP or my monitor? This happened after my brother ran all the system recovery discs. It appears several drivers didn't install correctly. He actually ended up ditching this computer for a new one because he was unable to get this one online. I think I've gotten it back to fully-functioning, but I need advice with this monitor stuff.

I updated Windows XP to Service Pack 2 yesterday. After installing and re-booting, the screen resolution and the colours of my monitor have changed (big icons and only four colours), which makes it look like it was in Safe Mode (which it isn't).I have tried to change the screen resolution and the colours under Display properties - Settings, but it only gives me the option of a screen resolution of "640x480 pixels" (the slider won't move) and colour quality of "Lowest 4 bit".I presumed it was a driver issue so I have tried to uninstall the graphics controller in the device manager and re-install it with the latest driver.

I'm really bombed out when I have to scroll left to right on any web page. I love CNet forums, but it is a constant matter of that irritating scrolling that may make me stop using it. Yeah, I've tried adjusting my screen resolution, but then the type is so small it becomes a chore to read it. And, other websites designed to use my screen resolution look ridiculous in the browser. I don't care what "statistics" say about screen resolution, the vast majority of web sites are constructed to fit 800x600 res. Either that, or the web masters are smart enough to code them to fit various resolutions.

Our offices have many Lenovo computers, 2004 vintage, no model name shown anywhere. The original driver disc is long lost, but for all but one of these, Windows XP finds built-in drivers that just work. Here is my chronology for the Bad Box that doesn't just work, there's really no alternative except to put the files that the box wants on the drive. To do this, I put the blank drive in one of the other Lenovo boxes (identical hardware in every way) and used XXClone to make a bootable clone of that other drive, put it back in my Lenovo and it booted fine, video looked great. I noticed that this system had never been updated and was running the original flavor of XP (confirmed in the properties of "My Computer"), so I downloaded Service Pack 2 and installed it.

I know that in Win ME there is a program for Desktop Themes that you can pick and choose what you want to change or keep default and so forth, is there anything like for XP? Im still trying to adjust to Xp and I love it now. I seen this image on a website that this guy took of his desktop, and the toolbar had a new look to it and it was gray and it just looked pretty sweet.

I read somewhere that after adding RAM you also need to adjust the Paging File. I just found an informative article on this. I checked my Page File properties and it reads: C Drive (that's the only drive, no partition)
Custom Size:
Initial: 336 MB
Maximum: 672 MB
I have 990 MB RAM, hence the recommended 1485 MB (1.5 times)Should I increase the Page File size? I don't have a problem with performance, but I also haven't used any memory intensive programs. Also, is there a risk in allowing the system to set Page File? "System managed size"?And why some people recommend the same size for minimum and maximum?

The maximum size of your Internet Explorer browser cache is ### megabytes. Generally, cache sizes above 80 megabytes waste disk space and can actually cause slower performance.SolutionsHow to adjust the IE cache sizeStart Internet Explorer Select Tools | Internet Options | General tab Under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings button. In the box for the amount of disk space to use, enter a value between 5 and 80 megabytes. Click OK to accept the changes.Since I have a very fast Internet Connection I have found that setting my temp Internet Files to one Megabyte gives me the best performance.

I'm trying to write a simple batch file that would mute or turn down the volume at startup. The idea is to stop the obnoxious MS startup tune when booting up in a place where I don't want attention; i.e. on a plane, in a meeting, classroom, etc. As a techie I'm way too lazy and forgetful to mute the sound before logging off everytime and would much rather write a complicated script to do this. . why don't laptop makers install the old toggle volume switches?? click=on, off.. it would be such a simple solution to this..

For security reasons, Microsoft does not allow parents (computer administrators) to check on, maintain, adjust or otherwise enter their kids' (limited users) XP profiles without either resetting their passwords or waiting for them to come home and being confrontational about it.Ideally I would like to be able to log on to a limited user account from my administrator account without tampering with anyone's passwords-resetting them or otherwise. Actually, I have little interest in the (step) kids' personal life and stuff. Alternately, perhaps you may help me with my ultimate goal: limiting screensaver activity:

So i used to have the default Windows XP Visual styles on my laptop here. But i heard it makes the computer a tiny bit faster without them, so i selected "adjust for best performance" ... now the only problem is that there is a tiny, tiny, little line underneath the taskbar ... it seems to be part of the taskbar, and it is the same color and all, but it makes it so that all my stuff on the taskbar isn't all the way to the bottom of the screen.

My video card is: ATI Radeon HD 4350
It has one Digital and one Analog port on the back.
I had it setup using 1920 x 1080 on both ports (dual monitor).
But I can't get that to work again.
When I set the monitor using the VGA port to 1920x1080 then it displays 1280x720 on the monitor, but the video card is outputting 1920x1080. The display seems to scroll when the mouse is on the edge of the screen because obviously it can't display 1920x1080 on a 1280x720 resolution.
So as of now, my monitor is displaying everything really big and it's useless at this point.

Also on the resolution page it shows a plug and play in lieu of a monitor. This computer is used mainly for computer games and internet. I had a virus (supposedly) that was ending my explorer.exe over and over again, and the process in the task manager that appeared to be doing so was IEXPLORE.EXE, I know thats IE, but I figured since IE is broken on my computer (go figure) and I have FireFox, why not attempt to delete IE, because every time I ended the process it would come back.So I went into safe mode, I went and deleted the whole IE program folder (stupid thinking) and went back into normal windows. What I saw scared me... I had 4 bit colors (which is what I'm on right now typing to you guys) and 800x600 resolution, and I can't put it any higher.

I just upgraded my Dell 4300 XP Home Edition to SP2. When it rebooted, the welcome screen was in blue and white instead of its usual color rich format and the background resolution was really poor quality.A window popped up and informed me that my settings were set too low and asked whether I wanted Windows to auto correct the problem. I clicked "yes", but nothing was resolved.
