Home Repair SP2 / SP1 Confusion
Jun 20, 2005
I have XP Home edition with SP2 installed, but an SP1 CD.I recently had to perform a repair install from the CD after the system refused to start (following the help from another PC).The system now boots, but is very slow and just doesn't seem right.Checking the software version, I now have XP with SP1, but when I try to
reapply SP2 the system tells me it has already been applied so won't reload it.My installation logs reflect the pre-repair situation, and I seem to have created some SP1/SP2 hybrid. Microsoft Update is telling me that I need to download a number of SP1 patches. Can I tell the system it is SP1 and then reload SP2? Or am I looking at a complete reinstall from scratch to get things straightened out?

I am fairly new to digital video/avi files and have very strange occurrence that is driving me nuts. Hope someone could shed some light. In search of the perfect golf swing- I tape and study golf swings which are typically in the 4-6 meg range in the avi format. I usually play them on a golf related viewer(V1 home) or windows media player. I downloaded several files of swings from V1's site and have been using them for a month or more. This file we will call ZZZ.File ZZZ had been working well but yesterday ZZZ crashed the VI software. It also crashed WMPlayer. I thought it may have been corrupt so I deleted it and downloaded another copy. It too was not playable with either players. I emailed this new ZZZ to my office last night and viewed it today with WMPlayer/V1 just fine. SO- I emailed it back home and once again it can not be viewed- just crashes both players. This is the only file that is giving me problems- I tried to rename the file but nothing.

I'm having all sorts of problems with my computer (Windows Explorer shutting down, DVD drive not reading blank or used DVD+Rs correctly, etc). Tried to repair using SFC /Scannow but since it says that there are files that are missing or replaced by other files it asks for the SP2 CD- which I don't have since it was an automatic download.
1. Any way to remove SP2? It's not listed in the add/remove programs?
2. If I put in the SP1a CD, will it repair Windows to the SP1A setting WITHOUT causing me to lose all my data?
3. Are there problems with the updates from last week because all the problems started after the seven automatic downloads.
4. Can I download the SP2 somewhere online and run it to correct the problems?

I have xp sp2 installed with dual boot to Ubuntu on a toshiba a15-s127. I only have an SP1 disk. Can I use an XP Media center sp2 rollup to repair the MBR and then delete the ubuntu partition? I read the section on making an sp2 repair disk out of a sp1 disk but that seems like more work than reinstalling and updating the sp1 system.

This started out as a bad NTOSKRNL.exe issue, eventually after using the boot dist to get me to the comand prompt (via boot disk) I tried using a chkdsk /r for this issue. It would go up to 80%. hti back to 50% and creep along and it almost took 2 hours for a partial (though not complete scan of the disk) normal chkdsk finds no errors odd.I cannot go through with the XP setup repair, because it goes to the above error. The harddrive light at the moment is almost steady on, though the 'read/write' noise is intermittent.I am trying to load thos CPU without f disking this but it seems like the little boy at the dyke analogy, one hole gets plugged and another opens up.

I have just started to have problems with my Acer T120E Aspire. When the pc is switched on it boots up as normal, showing the Windows XP home edition splash screen and goes to user accounts. When one is selected, it does'nt matter which one, it goes through the logging in procedure, showing the 'loading your personal settings' screen. However, after about ten seconds it goes blank the cpu fan cuts in and the computer restarts again.I decided to repair XP as I could'nt even log in under safe mode. I borrowed a disc as I have misplaced the original disc that was supplied.

New machine (Dell) with 3 160gb "non raided" hard drives about to be delivered. Old machines system disk (Windows XPPro and apps) has about 15gb used. (C drive) Seems that on the new computer it would be a good idea if my system (boot) disc (C drive partition?) had an exact copy made at the same time (mirrored?) onto a (seperate partition?) on one of the other drives (say E drive) so that if the C drive goes down I can press a magic switch and everything is restored from E drive without having to reload Windows (XPPRO)
and all the apps. Totally confused with RAID and Mirroring and things like Ghost and Drive Image. Should I get back to Dell and ask for some sort of RAID - or other advice gratefully received.

I just tried to repair my windows XP Home with the XP CD in the drive and with a boot up - I got to "Windows XP Licensing agreement" "End User license agreement" "F8=I agree ESC=I do not agree PAGE DOWN= Next Page"When I press F8 nothing happens, when I press ESC nothing happens, When I press PAGE DOWN it works, but thats no help. Also if I just insert the XP Home CD (without a boot up later) and try a normal repair off the CD a message advises me as follows : "install Cd not recognized, your info on hard drive is a later version" OR something like that.So how can I repair XP home if it is not recognized when i already have SP1 and SP2 installed?

Due to several fundamental errors in my Windows installation, today I decided to make a repair install of my Windows XP Home installation. I booted into my Windows disc, did all the normal stuff, and it seemed to go fine. At the end of the text-based stuff, it gave me the instruction to reboot, having moved the files it needed to the HDD, I believe. Anyway, the jist is that the text-based stuff seemed to go fine, I rebooted as instructed, and then did NOT click to boot from the CD (which, I believe, was the right choice). I let Windows load normally but... no GUI based stuff came up to finish off the repair installation, and consequently, what I've done seems to have had no effect whatsoever.

I have just installed some anti virus software and during installation I got messages saying my registry had been damaged and i should log onto such-and-such site to download repair software and run it on my system. I am suspicious that if I do this I am exposing myself to total destruction. One of the messages has just popped up again and the site it directs me to is FixReg32.com.

Problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, windows works absolutely fine no problems what so ever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream.
It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.

I recently had a bad hard drive (It need the windows xp cd to boot) and saw that the problem was bad blocks. I decide to buy a new hard drive and use ghost to clone it. But, now i have the same problem with the new hard drive. After a while, i realize that obviously, if the disk was cloned, ONLY the information that can be copied was transfered to the other one.In conclusion, how can I resolve this issue without using system repair. the problem is that once i use this tool and then IE won't work. at last I had to format the drive.

I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

I have a laptop with a proprietary CD that will only reformat the hard drive and load a ghost XP operating system. Is there any way to repair XP without having a MS XP disk, short of buying a MS XP system disk? By the way, I cannot stress enough the importance of backups. I use an external USB HD and do weekly full and daily differentials with NTBACKUP. When my laptop HD crashed, I was able to easily recover 100% of my files (less XP restore points, of course).

I've done a bit of searching on here and thought I'd found a way out of my problem but it seems not. Briefly my PC keeps looping on start up, it won't start in safe mode, last known config etc, so after reading here I've popped in a XP CD to do a repair but from instructions I didn't chose the 'r' function but pressed 'enter' to start the setup. I accepted the licence agreement and the PC found 2 partitions but I don't get the option to 'repair'. All I can do is 'end' the setup as I don't want to wipe my data

I upgraded from xp pro sp2 to sp3 and after that computer was very slow. So I repaired SP3 and during that process it started asking for 'asms' file. Even though the sp3 cd(which i burnt from a ISO image) had the asms folder it does seem to sense the cd. I am really stuck now because, even if I reboot my pc without the cd it goes to windows setup asks for 'asms' file. Even in safe mode it says windows setup cannot proceed in safe mode it reboots.Kindly help me on what can I do now so that either i can get thru with the 'asms' file or is there a way I can revert back to sp2 and do any possible recovery so that I can go into windows and backup my files.

Right now I am having big problems with my PC. I cannot load Windows or boot in safe mode because I get this error message: MSVPC60.dll is missing, etc... .After that, the PC just hangs to a black screen. - I cannot repair Windows XP using traditional methods found on Google, such as booting with the Windows CD and going into setup and then repairing ( not using recovery console). Second, I have already tried one method in the recovery console : http://www.short-media.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, This method has eliminated a few errors ( Im now down to only MSVPC60 ) but it is enough to prevent me from doing anything.

I'm trying to run a repair on windows xp, using the installation disk. I get to the point where I am suppose to choose the operation system that I want to repair but it is not there. It gives me the correct drive but there is no indication of the operating system. Since it is not there I can not choose "r" to repair. My only option is to install of quit. I'm guessing something happened when I originally installed xp.
