Is there a way that you can restrict access to the standard games that come with XP? I have gone in and put them in the list of disallowed applications by the executable name but would prefer a GPO setting to not show the menu at all and disable the games for the corporate network.
View 1 RepliesLong story short. I want to restrict my employees from logging into ANY wireless access point other than the one at our work. Employees have access to laptops for work use and I want to restrict them from being able to take the laptops home and using them on their home networks and then bringing them back to work to connect to the works network. This will reassure that they are not bringing viruses from home and putting them on our network. Unfortunately since they are considered a "work tool" I can not stop them from taking them away from work, but I would like to restrict them from connecting to any other access point other than ours at work. Any suggestions?

Noone could have changed anything im positive and im the only one who uses this computer ever. Would a reinstall fix the problem? and also as a side question can i reinstall windows and save all the data that on the computer does a reinstall of windows without formatting just overwrite the system or if i reinstall will i have to reinstall everything because ive been having other misc problems and id like the reinstall if i dont have to backup or copy all my info

Would like to make use of all the following options:
- unable for non-administrators to turn on the computer between 10PM and 6AM.
- unable for non-administrators to access internet.
- non-adminstrators able to access internet but not Instant Messenger.
Even though I made a limited account it still has access to my hard drives, is there a way I can prevent a limited access account from accessing programs and files I want to keep secure?

I now have a new lodger moving in, and she needs the pc for studying. I have set her a limited account up, but how do I restrict her from a) downloading and b) accessing my folders.I have tried the share /unshare, but when I log on her as her, I can still view my own folders. If I right click on one of my folders, and then go to properties/sharing, it does say 'to share this folder with other users on the computer' drag to shared documents - I have not done this, so thoughtit would not be shared. Where it says' To make this folder and its subfolders private so that only you can access, select the follwing box' - That box is greyed out, so I cannot do anything!

However, none of my games was able to run (because all these games use the file DOS4GW.exe, which requires direct hardware access and extended memory, not supported by the command line)I tried every emulator i found on the net (DOSbox, Virtual PC, Virtual Machine) but nothing,So i decided to make a DOS boot disk . Everytime, i insert the disk, i will boot to pure DOS, and when i eject the disk, Windows XP will load.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhile in XP I deleted a partiain that had Fedora on it. I was using GRUB to do multi-boot. When I rebooted XP it booted to the GRUB command line. I rebooted and hit F12 to try to get to system settings and after I chose system settings it went right back to the GRUB command line. I rebooted again and hit F2 to get to system settings and it went straight to the GRUB command line again.I'm pretty sure I need to fix my MBR but, I can't change my settings to boot from my CD and I don't have a floppy drive.

HELP!! I went to install some VPN software on my desktop (Dell Dimension 2350; Windows XP; P4/2GHz; 1GB RAM) and the next thing you know, my OS won't boot. I think I corrupted my registry (again).
"Missing dll NWGINA.DLL. Either replace or contact your system administrator" is the error message that I gOt on a black screen after all attempts at reboot & startup: boot from Windows XP CD, fiddled around with CMOS a little, made every attempt to boot to Windows XP and came up empty.
I have a Dell 4600 with with 769MB Ram and Windows XP Pro. My XP boot sequence got corrupted (according to Dell) on my "C" drive. They wanted me to reformat the drive (and lose all my work). Instead I installed XP onto my secondary drive and nenamed it "C", set up a special partition on my secondary drive to receive the old files ("D") and renamed the "bad" drive to "G". Though I can access/copy most files from "G" onto "D", my "Documents and Settings/Administrator" directory on "G" (not password-protected, but contained a lot of files) are all "access-denied". I can't open/view these files on "G" or even copy them to "D". If I try to open them, I get a "files inaccessible, access is denied" msg.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did an XP update and installed all the Windows updates. Now I cannot install my Radeon SE-DT graphics drivers. I get an "installation failed, try to install standard VGA drivers" note after the most current downloaded driver installation program runs InstallShield. I'm running on an ASUS A7V motherboard (1011 BIOS) with AMD Athlon processor and 768 MB of Crucial RAM; 2GB Maxtor drive. I'm using LiveOne Care for security.I'd lime to know if the motherboard chipset drivers can be updated from within Windows without doing the floppy disk boot.
I'm running graphics on the VGA save mode and it is goofy scrolling down a screen watching the waves as the data clunks in. Can anyone suggest an easy install? ATI Radeon has been no help so far. By the way, Device Manager shows no video display components from which verify or update drivers.
I can't install acrobat 9 standard in my laptop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer died so I took the harddrive out and put it in my other computer as a second drive (not the drive to boot from). Now everything under the F:Documents & SettingsLen" directory cannot be accessed. If I look at the "Len" directory and all of it's subdirectories on the second drive "Make this folder private" is not check so I don't understand why I can't read it. In fact the "Make this folder private" is not checked. If it helps any the drive is an NTFS drive.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.
For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features
Since there are 8 bits to a byte there can be a major misunderstanding with abbreviations. Are there standard abbreviations for bits and bytes? I always assumed bits was small b and bytes was capital B. Is this true? 100 MB - mega bytes. 100 mb - mega bits.Is a 56k modem 56k bytes or bits per second?Can I assume everything is bytes unless bits is specifically stated?

I need to add a printer using TCP/IP but when i click on local_printer > create a new port...the standard tcp/ip option is not there.Local Port is there but NOT Standard TCP/IP. Can this be restored and replaced?

My Standard Account got reset for the 2nd time. Firstly, when I didn't use my account for 4 days once I came to log on I realised that 'Personalized Settings' was showing up at the top left hand corner. This came again after I didn't use the account for one day. By reset I mean, the background wallpaper reset to default and the desktop folders not showing up. But when I went into 'Documents and Settings' in my administrator account (which didn't get reset), all the folders were showing up in my C Drive/Documents and Settings/ folder. Once I right-clicked on a folder on my system when this happened for the first time, my system froze. The system also froze when opening any file. This started happening a few weeks after I had installed COMODO Firewall which might be a coincidence even though I don't think it is but all these error messages/dialog box popped up on my account, roughly like 'Invalid or corrupt jarfile...' but on the administrator account none of these errors showed up when this happened on my account. In addition, this issue also happened when I changed my account from Standard to Administrator but this didn't change anything. When this happened for the first time, to solve the issue I made a new account and then copied all my files/folders over from my old account to the new one but because this problem has happened again, I predict that this will keep on happening again on every new account I make. I have also run malware scans which didn't detect any viruses.
eMachines PC, less than one year old, running XP Home (ugh)While in the "Owner" administrator account, I attempted to change the user rights for my daughter from "Restricted" to "Standard user". I used the "control userpasswords2" screen rather than the standard User Accounts control panel provided with XP Home.I immediately received an error message, stating something like "this account type cannot be found" or "this account type is not supported".No big deal that, but what occurred after that stymies me. My daughter's account is no longer visible in either of the account management control panels, and is also no longer visible in the Welcome Screen. All of her folders still exist.I attempted to re-add the account, but the system (perhaps wisely) prevents me from doing that, stating that the account still exists. Using the XP Home User Accounts control panel, I turned off the Welcome Screen; user login now uses the oldskool screen within which you have to enter the user account name in one field and the password in the other. My daughter is able to login that way.

After getting the system back I discovered that my failed Vista boot drive was still mountable as a non-boot drive. I can get to most everything on the drive except I can't get to anything under the C:Documents and Settings directory. I get access denied messages.

I went to; control panel/sounds and audio devices/sounds,and replaced it. It plays fine when I get mail, but the old notification plays after it.I removed the old notification before adding the new wav file and it still is happening.
I finally broke down and went from W2K Pro to XP Pro on my new build. Almost all my apps have installed just fine but two that I need will not. They are NetObjects Fusion 7 and Adobe Elements 2.0. Both are fairly new, around 2002 or 3 releases and both are rated for XP but once I launch the setup.exe the hourglass shows for about 5 seconds and then goes back to the standard cursor. I checked the Task Manager and in both cases setup.exe is loaded and running and I have to End Process to try the setup again but the same thing happens each time to both apps. They both installed fine and I've been using them for years on my W2K Pro machine.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI just finished rebuilding my PC and Installed Windows Xp 64 edition since I already had it sitting on my desk. Figured I might as well to compliment the new 64bit CPU. Anyways, everything is running great except for a few 3rd party programs I like to used with a few games. I want to install regular XP Pro but have my HD as one single 80gig partition. My question is, Is it possible to have 2 selectable bootable OS's on the same partition? If so, how and if not, Is there a way to downgrade from 64bit of windows to standard 32 without formating the drive? Worst comes to worst, I could reformat and reinstall everything all over again but I would rather avoid that if possible.
