How much space should I plan to partition for a new install of Windows XP pro? My current setup has 3 partitions on an 80GB drive. My system drive is about 5GB and I keep getting the low disk space message. Is 10GB enough or too much? I install all of my software and documents to another partition.

I need to wipe clean the hard disc on a desktop. It currently has XP-Home installed, which was an upgrade from ME. The ME files were erased from the desktop after installation of XP. After formatting I assume I will need an MS-DOS bootup disc to install ME; install ME and then upgrade to XP-Home. If my assumptions are correct how can I create a bootup disc for ME? I am hoping that someone has a simpler method than I have outlined.

I am trying to slipstream XP Pro & SP2 I did it all according to plan, the disc burned with no errors but it will not boot the system. When I look at the disc it looks like an ordinary XP disc, but when I put it in system it says PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT. Am I missing something, I did it last year with no problems; also I cant remember how to put the key in automatically.

I have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....

I have just recently gotten a new computer which came with Vista. Previously what I have done with any new operating system I got was installed it into my old computer. However, I came to find out you can only have one computer assigned to each cd, unless I wanna buy another one, which is unecessary. I wanted to get rid of Vista and return to XP but the XP disc would not install because of multiple errors, such as missing ntldr.

My computer crashed about a month ago and I had to use a recovery disc to restore my original system.. Everything works fine except when I boot up and following the Sony logo and Intel logo the following message appears "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. Acronis fatal error Boot drive (partition) not found. Press Enter to try to boot your PC." Pressing enter boots up the PC fine but how can I eliminate the process? I had Acronis on both drives before the crash but it no longer exists.

Recently I had a bout with Trojans (Vundo in particular) and spyware. The machine just kept rebooting. Installed XP on another partition in order to go out to the web and figure it out.. Finally I decided it would be easier to just reload. After a clean install and installing drivers for some hardware, Windows informed me it needed to reboot so the device would work correctly. After POST I got a non bootable disk error. I put the Windows DVD in to try a repair install, but wanted to see what would happen ifI let it go past press any key to boot from CD.... To my surprise I was able to get into Windows. I suspected that there might be some virus/spyware leftover in the MBR.First I uninstalled the other copy of XP, then tried repairing the MBR. Now it comes up with a missing operating system message when I reboot.I can get into windows as long as the boot from cd option is on in BIOS and I do not "select any key to boot from CD"

Ok recentli have been having issues when starting up windows xp. Everytime i startup it asks for my boot disk. I have tried to change my boot sequence, having windows not even boot from my floppy disk, but still it looks for the boot disk. The only way i can start up my computer is by going through all 6 boot disks and after it will restart and start up windows.

Well like alot of people I made the mistake of selecting safeboot in the boot.ini file in the msconfig file after my comp got a virus and would not boot into safemode. The hard drive is in two partitions: the C drive used to contain windows, and the D drive which has the data i am trying to save. I don't have a Windows XP disc because it was already on the comp when i bought it. I have attempted to restore the windows files with Bart PE bootup image disc but it wiped out Windows XP completely from the C drive in the process, but the Data drive is still showing up with all its files intact.

I'm having a problem with my XP laptop. I've been hibernating my laptop daily for the past couple of years. Recently after waking up from every hibernation, the laptop gives the following error message:System restart has been paused:Continue with system restart.Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. After that it boots into Windows, however i lose all of my open programs which is rather annoying. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

How long should it take to boot my computer? It seems slow to me, for a new computer (about 4 months old).Compaq Presario R3000 notebook, 256K, 80Gigs, P4 (I think), XP, using Norton Anti-Virus, wireless cable internet, sometimes using docking station sometimes not, peripherals are old HP printer/fax/copier/ scanner and occasonally wireless mouse.I'm not sure if I'm just being impatient or if I have some programs that are slowing down the booting process What is the average boot time?

first i get the HP blue screen. I tried F1, but i dont see my hard drive in the boot menu. I followed some steps in Hp's web site- took the cpu apart and unplugged both hard drives from the motherboard, plugged them back in. when i restarted ,i got the HP screen and then windows started to load up. After a few seconds the HP screen came back up and then the black screen: sk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I also noticed that pressing F10 for system recovery does nothing.

I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

I"m running WinXP SP2 Home. Hardware is 2.0 Celeron, 1 gig Ram, 64MB Nvidia Video Card, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, HD's are 250GIG Western Digital with 4 partitions and 27% free on the XP Boot and 200GIG Western Digital with 2 Partitions. I have a Lite-On DVD +-R/RW drive and a 3.5 floppy. I am setup with a Duel-Boot configuration Win 98/XP. I do not have a paging file.
My problem occures after I hit enter for the Select Operating System page. I Hit enter, Win XP proceeds to load. After I hit enter and Windows loads the blue welcome screen 1 minute has passed. I hear the Welcome Audio music, however blue welcome screen is still there for 30 more seconds. Next is my picture that I have as my background that is shown without icons for 1minute 21seconds. Windows now displays my icons on my desktop. the icons blink at minute 4. after 4 minutes and 51 seconds I am able to use my computer. At bootup I only have 43 programs running and 357MB of the 1 gig ram taken.
What I have done:
1) I have started in safe mode and defraged my PC, 0% frag on all partitions except a drive that isn't currently plugged in and it was 1% because it's my backup drive (not worried about that 1%)
2)Removing all connected Componets and rebooted, same problem.
3) I have tried using msconfig.exe and setting the startup selection as Normal- it's defaulted to Selective. Tried reducing my startup programs. ....

I bought a computer for my wife and kids. Well months go by and my wife tries to install something and notices that the MAIN drive is H: not C:
I figured that it was weird but no big deal. Well I purchased a printer for her and while trying to install the software it was giving me a "Windows - No Disk in Drive" error.
I did some research and spoke to HP tech support and they suggested that I search the web for a way to change the drive letters from H: (current hard drive) to C: (supposed to be default drive)

i was trying to restore my backup of the partition with the windows xp system on it. Of course, everything went wrong and Norton Ghost 2003 had an error at about 95%. I thought i can just boot from the win xp cd and fix the problem... no way when i try to boot from the win xp cd, i get a black screen after checking my pc configuration, no driver loading etc.
when i try to boot from my sata drive, it says that there are some missing files (that's not strange, if ghost didnt work like it should) when i try to boot from any other drive i get an error like this: A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your Computer. If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow thease steps: Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdisk/f to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: STOP: 0x0000007B(0xF8958640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
