When I open files and folders I no longer have the tasks and links to perform certain functions displayed to the far left of the file folder. Instead, now I have two panes--a panel which displays all folders, drives, etc. on the left-hand side and the individual files and folders listed on the right-hand side. What happened? I'm using Windows XP SP2.

I've tried everything (group policies, Kaspersky 7, AVG Anti Spyware and monitoring changes to the Registry real time), however, when I click on that tick mark button, the explorer window refreshes once or twice and nothing happens.

If i close the window and reopen, the setting has changed back to 'do not show hidden files and folders'.

I then create a restore point.Today, for the first time ever, I needed to restore my computer to a previous date because my XP view changed to Classic view and the option to change it back to XP view wasn't available. But the restore points that I saved were not available. I was given a choice of July 1,2,3,4 and 5. The last time I created a restore point was last Monday, June 27th,but when I clicked on the << arrow to go back to the month of June, it wouldn't go back.What happened to the restore points that I created and why couldn't I access them?I know that they were saved because I received a message that they were created.And I have no idea why my XP view changed to Classic View when I turned my computer on yesterday.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have lost my start menu I also have lost the bottom task bar. In addition the views have all changed on the tool bars. For example, on the internet explorer tool bar, the icons are on top of each other or otherwise unaccessible. Several programs no longer work and I get error messages as follows "The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect..." I hit control-alt-delete, nothing happens.
I went to Housecall and ran a virus scan and nothing showed up. I had previously installed (many months ago) SpyBot S&D. As noted above, this is one of the programs that will not run and I get the error message. I tried to uninstall this program and then reinstall it. After downloading the program, I still got the above error message that the application configuration is incorrect.
I tried to start in safe mode. Although I cannot get to system configuration utility, I was able to get to safe mode by hitting F8 as the computer was starting. I selected safe mode and then selected Windows XP as the operating system. The next screen had the words safe mode in each corner and a Log On window in the middle.
A folder full of PSD files. I have the folder on thumbnail view so I can easily find a look I wan't and choose it instead of opening up each one. The problem is that the folder is not generating a preview of the file anymore but instead shows the PSD icon. I just got a new computer and it is since then that this has stared, as on my old computer the previews showed up fine. Is this a setting I need to change somewhere?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIf I keep any folder open for longer than like 7 seconds, explorer.exe encounters a problem and needs to close, I can usually just drag the error to the corner and keep looking at the folder for about 20 more seconds before it crashes completely, sometimes explorer shuts off with no warning while viewing a folder. I have tried the remove defective right click menu buttons thing and scanning for viruses, but it still does it, tell me if you want more info.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI like my explorer in the "classic style" with the Folders bar down the side and all files listed in "detail", but since the last couple of automatic Windows updates, it no longer starts up with the Folders bar, which I have to manually click every time, and shows all files in icon by default. Until today, if I click on View Detail, Windows remembered this for that particular folder, and over time all of my regularly visited folders would start up in detail, so the manual configuration was only minimal. Today, however, all files in all folder are back to icons as default, and Windows no longer remembers the detail setting when I revisit folders.

Is there a way to set the default view to open folders with the document tree showing?I have tried switching it to the classic view, but that doesn't have the versatility of the full document tree. View 14 Replies View RelatedI have two burners in my system; one CD-R/W and one DVD-R/W. I usually burn everything on the DVD drive. However, after I burn something and place it back into the DVD drive to view the files, I can't. When I go to My Computer, right click on the DVD drive, I don't have the option to "OPEN". I do have this option on the CD-R/W drive but I'm wondering why I don't have that option on the DVD drive. This seems strange to me that I cannot do an OPEN on the right click with the DVD drive. any suggestions? I'm running WinXP Pro with all the updates, 2GB Ram.

I installed XP Home clean from scratch; updated to the latest SP and patches, including WMP 11 and IE7. Ever since then the icons of all files on CD/DVD is changed to HTM ones:It does not happen in other folders or flash drives; only CDs/DVDs, any CDs/DVDs. I'm at my wits end as to how to resolve this. Clicking on the files however launches the appropriate application associated with the particular file type.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been working on a Dell computer for several days. Initially the computer had a spyware infection. While cleaning it up I got a message telling me some windows files had been changed and i needed to insert the Windows XP CD to restore them. Soon aftewards I got a message on reboot saying Windows had recovered from a corrupt registry. I was going to do a SFC /scannow, but at some point I was no longer able to reboot. I did a repair install at the 2nd prompt. Later when reinstalling SP2, the installation failed somewhere, and Windows automatically removed a portion of SP2.
This condition was totally unstable. Next, I did a quick reformat and fresh install. Everything seemed better until the old message came back, "Windows recovered from a corrupt registry..." on a reboot after installing SP2 or one of the other critical updates. Soon I was no longer able to log on to Windows at all...no user names appeared in the logon screen...hit CTRL + ALT + DEL twice and the old Windows 2000 sytle logon box appeared, but Windows refused to let me logon under Administrator or the user name set up with blank passwords. I ran the Maxtor iagnostics test from floppy, and it found no problems with the hard drive. I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics all night, but it found no errors. Right now I am doing a complete reformat and reinstall and hoping for the best.
I am having trouble viewing power point slide shows people send me via email.I recently did my critical and security updates and since doing that it hasn't worked to view these files..they worked before the updates.
