After migrating my win xp pro system to a bigger hard drive using the Western Digital tools, everytime I try to empty the Recycle Bin, an error dialog pops up stating Error Deleting File or Folder: Access Denied..When I explore the Recycle Bin folder, it's empty. Then I try to empty the Recycle Bin again. The same message appears.

This week i did somehow get it to move there, but when i tried to delete it for good I got the same error. So i used Tune-Up Utilities 2008 in an attempt to get rid of it. The folder is gone, but the error remains. I think the bin is not working properly anymore either. I moved some folders of music to the recycle bin but they weren't there yet rar files i had deleted were. I have tried many many different commands, and a "restore recycle bin" registry edit, and safe mode.

My curent problem is that When I rightclick a desktop icons I only get an hour glass, the system stops responding to any thing. The only way out of it it to either log off or shut down and restart.When I open the recycle bin though it appears full on the desktop icon I could not see any item on it.If I try do delete, move this folder or any of the command on the left file/folder task pane I only get hour glass. The only way out of it is ctrl+alt+del, task manager (program not responding) end task.

I finally need to update to Vista. My PC still works well, it's just been having some problems lately. Anyway, The reason for this thread is because something bizarre happened. I had just sent 2 or 3 files to the Recycle Bin. Then I right-clicked it and hit "Empty Recycle Bin". It deleted the files; that's all well and fine. Then I noticed, that after I deleted them, the icon had paper in the bin like there were files in it. So I opened it and saw nothing. I closed that and saw the icon still said there were files in it. So I right-clicked, hit "Empty Recycle Bin", then saw the same old "Are you sure you want to delete (insert file)?" message. Instinctively, I hit "Yes" and started reading what file it was while clicking it. BAM. The file was I thought for sure my PC was screwed for good. But I checked in "HP_PAVILION C" and it was still there, I looked again at the "Recycle Bin" and everything was fine.

I am using XP and would like to regularly transfer files as a backup to a usb stick. As the capacity of the USB stick is limited, I will have to delete older backups when I run my scheduled transfer of new files. I usually have these files encrypted as they are confidential. My question is where do they go if I delete them on the USB stick? Are they ending up on my harddrive or in the recycle bin of the harddrive from where they can still be retrieved later on? Do USB sticks have their own recycle bin or some area where deleted files slumber?

Once I click on the file and hit delete the hard drive starts going and after a while I get a confirmation message "Are you sure you want to send file.ext to the recycle bin?" I click yes and then it's hung up again for a while as I watch pieces of paper float accross the screen from a file folder to a recycle bin, and then it finally deletes. This is a new problem on my old machine.I also can't open the recylcing bin, but I can empty it. When I click on the recycle bin it opens a window and shows the "flashlight" icon, the hard drive goes, and it never finished it's process, never displays the recycling bin contents.

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

And there are errors in movies that I have ripped (because I either forget to put them back in the case or they get lost) some movies and whenever I try to move the video file (ripped int a AUDI0_TS file and a VIDEO_TS file) I have an error box where the title of the window in the blue bar says "Error Copying File or Folder" and in the window (the gray part) it says "Cannot copy VTS_01_2" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).". And then I click the "OK" button and it stops the transfer. The VTS_01_2 is sometimes replaced with whatever file that cannot be transferred or that is causing the problem. I used DVDShrink and DVD43 to back them up. I am running Windows XP sp3 and transferring them onto a 300 GB hard drive.

At the end of the day, there was one folder that I could not delete from the recycle bin. When I tried to empty the recycle bin, it would delete files until it got to this one. Then I would get the message:(Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk). I would then have to go into the recycle bin and delete the remaining files manually. But this one would still not delete out of the recycle bin.

This folder is named: S-1-5-21-1708537768-175567821-839522155-1004 I am unable to delete this folder. To see any files now I have to open up Norton EuErase Wizard I do this by clicking on this unwanted folder (S-1-5-21-1708537768-175567821-839522155-1004) I have another drive - I have each drive independent - both create this folder.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I downloaded the updated drivers for my hp scanner software, an icon appeared on my desktop and if I right click it to delete it my computer freezes. If I drag it to the recycle bin or any other folder it just duplicates it and it is still on the desktop. I can't find anywhere else where I could delete it from the registry for example or add/delete programs list. I can't rename it , to try to delete it, because of the freezing issue. I will never use it so It bothers me that its there.
