Display Wont Appear On Startup
Jan 3, 2006
I've just started up my computer and the screen won't come on. Although the shade of black appears to alter slightly just after being turned on. I've checked the cables, power to computer and monitor, both fine. The keyboard lights come on and the mouse light also comes on. I can hear the hard disk and fan whirring away too. Before there was no display on startup, this occured after I had a problem with the graphics card the display would appear at the Win XP startup screen. I checked for viruses the last time that the computer was switched on, so it was clean. Not really sure what else to try, short of taking it to a PC repair shop!

I reinstalled XP Pro with SP1 on my computer today. Everything is working well except when my desktop loads the actual display is about an inch to the right on the screen. If I go into properties and change/apply the screen resolution from 800 x 600 then back to 1024 x 768 it realigns and all is well. I would just prefer to not have to do that each time I restart windows.

I downloaded a reputable game for the kids yesterday (Ben Jordan 4.) The game automatically changes display to 320x200 when started and reverts back to normal settings when you quit the game. Last night the girls just closed the laptop without exiting the program. This morning the laptop was frozen so I rebooted, however, now Windows reboots in 320x200. It's so large only "Turn Off Computer" is available. When I start in safe mode the Display Properties shows 1440x900. Computer in question is a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop, running Windows XP Home w/SP3
So far I have...
1. Deleted the game files. (There is no install/uninstall)
2. Run Norton system scan and Spybot sweep
3. Did a System Restore
4. Tried to change display settings in Safe mode
It still boots in the 320x200 resolution.

Windows display setting keeps resetting after startup On startup of my computer the monitor screen displays normal sized icons, then enlarges to gigantic icons. After all programs are started I right click on the screen and click on properties. Display properties open, then I click on settings and move the slider to my likings, I click apply and the desktop reverts to normal size and operates in all areas normally. The problem is I have to perform this task every time I restart my computer. It's obvious that the apply/ok
setting in the display properties setting is not sticking. Is there a fix for this condition? Please HELP. Running Windows XP.

I have a Dell D610 laptop running WinXP Pro. The screen is an SXGA+ (1400x1050 resolution). I have a docking station at home and use a 19" wide screen LCD monitor (1440x900). My docking station at work has a 23" wide screen LCD monitor (1920x1200). The laptop and home 19" monitor look good at normal size (96 DPI) setting. However, the large 23" monitor needs the Display DPI Setting increased to large size (120 DPI) for my old eyes.
The problem is having to constantly change between normal and large display DPI settings. This change requires a reboot to take effect. Is there a program or script available that will run at startup and allow me to choose the DPI setting? Even better would be a startup script that detects which monitor is in use and sets the display DPI accordingly.

The SHIFT key was pressed too long and we got into the Swift Key feature somehow. We got out of it by exiting the application. However, now everytime we start the computer, key strokes don't appear on the screen. You have to hold down the SHIFT key until it makes a sound and then you can type characters and they are displayed on the screen. It is irritating to start the computer and not be able to type anything.
There is probably a switch that was set that I can't find. How can I get rid of this "feature?" PC is Laptop Dell 2600 Inspiron running XP Home.

For some reason, when my partner's computer boots up, the Windows taskbar is frozen, sometimes for up to a couple of minutes. When it finally becomes available, the Start menu etc works fine, but the system tray does not display everything that it should (for example the volume control) even though I have set it to "always show" in Properties>Customise

I have problems if I try and run the display settings above 800x600. I was wondering if this would be fixed if I upgrade the firmware settings and if so where would I get these upgrades? Whenever I try and run it at a higher display setting all I get is a thing saying "Signal isnt compatible with this display setting".

The monitor started showing graphic distortion. I ordered a new monitor but had the same distortion on it. I updated the ATI drivers but it did not solve the problem. In trying to trouble shoot the problem following directions on the ATI website, I changed all the graphic settings to the lowest and slowest available. This got rid of the distortion but the settings need to go! Now I cannot open the display settings.

All my text/font display settings seem to have changed. I downloaded a freeware program today called avi2dvd, to convert avi video files to iso files for burning to DVD. I tried it out, got frustrated with it, and uninstalled it. After I uninstalled it, I went to check my email. That's when I first noticed that all the text in my yahoo email account had changed - it seemed smaller, like it was at a lower resolution.
I clicked on a few more pages and it was the same for all of them - the text was just not as...smooth. Not as readable. And definitely smaller. It's not just a font size thing, I'm not that much of a newbie, I tried enlarging the font and it's definitely a resolution thing, not just a font or size issue. Then I tried out some other programs, and found out that the problem was system-wide. I use a writing program called Final Draft, and the text in that is also less readable.I found one program that hadn't been affected: IE all my web pages display fine in Explorer.

my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. I removed it again, using instructions from Systematic Antivirus and now it's really gone. Some of the settings were still weird though. So after hours of searching the help topics on Microsoft I managed to fix 1 & 1/2 of the problems I had/have.
For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab. (I have Windows XP Professional, by the way.) I can't click inside of the background list and it's shaded a sort of brownish beige color. I also can't browse and do anything with the position setting. I can however access the customize desktop and color features

I was installing security cables for the computer stations. when I finished and rebooted the computers(had to disconnect power and other cords to run the security cables) one of them had a display problem.
it seems that the display area has been reduced. the functional area of the screen is maybe 60% of what it should be. in this area it is complete with the full desktop able to be accessed and nothing is missing. but the right 20% of the screen is solid black (cursor stops at the boundary) and the bottom 20% of the screen(that's not black) is displaying a second image of the top 20% of my desktop. (cursor also stops at this boundary.)

I am experiencing pixelization problems. At first it would only occur at boot up or reboot. Now it is happening all the time which can be help somewhat by refresh, changing the desktop picture, and/or logging off then on I have tried, disabling the 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 Pro using device manager. At first it was OK but at low resolution (VGA I think), but when it asked if I wanted to let windows manage the graphics it got garbled again. I have reset resolutions down to 800 x 600 using the graphics card but that doesn't help.

I have a strange problem, I must have somehow scrolled a display window in my program out of the screen and left it there. Now the window has cut off 20% of the side of window and there is no way to bring it back into the window. If I mazimize the window size the scroll doesn't show.If I make the window smaller so that the horizontal scroll does show it won't scroll far enough to the left to show the missing section of the window.

I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.

My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.

Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!

Msconfig shows my startup options to be -Normal Diagnostic Selective
Ought to to choose diag?Or Selective?because I can't decide which programmes I ought to remove and which to leave in, but I'm sure I have too many.

My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?

The problem is it takes an incredibly long time to startup because of these, once we close them it gets back to running fast, but until then we have to wait for them to open. I think it's causing the problem because we didn't have this problem until we installed this. How do I make it stop starting up on Windows XP? I sped up my startup on my computer by stopping useless things from running.

I have an older IBM 10in screen thinkpad running Win2000. Turned it on for the first time in a while the other day and the windows sign on screen is off the right and it is like I am on dual monitor. Can slide pointer to right and get to one side with startup menu then slide pointer back to left for icons. When put a screen saver on in tile mode, it duplicates it side by side but you have to scroll left to see both. Have gone into display and tried to change things but nothing works. When I go to settings, it shows only one monitor but says display [Multiple monitors} on silicon Motion LynxEM+.
